There are various reasons for dislikes Peter. Some simply don’t like how I’ve presented it and some searched for something else but got a cab ride. Some get hacked off with the adverts and some will pick up on my spelling of the fact I use captions instead of a voiceover. I’ve accidentally hit dislike instead of like before now but usually correct it. You can’t please all of the folks all of the time but I really appreciate your support.

Looking at www.realtimetrains.co.uk/train/P58639/2019/08/28/advanced for 1S63, there are three columns for timings: WTT; GBTT and Real Time. Can you throw some light on them please? I'm trying to keep to WTT - but in a class 91 (my favourite loco.) I'm assuming the 350 you're driving here and the 390 presently being used on this have better acceleration?

Fantastic as ever Don, thank you. As a teenager in the mid 70's I made the trip from Euston to Carlisle and back on a football special. I enjoyed that very much. Often travelled it but never from the cab. Very useful information in the footnotes. I was reminded of a book by Terry Coleman entitled, 'The Railway Naavies', that tells the human story of the men who built the railways. We take them for granted now, but it was all a work of great human strength and endurance. There is also a fascinating and detailed biography of George Parker Bidder, the Victorian engineer, that gives great insight into the designing and development of the railways. Quite apart from the engineering challenges many political challenges also had to be overcome.
@doncoffey58205 жыл бұрын
Since you told me about these books, I’ve ordered the The Railway Navvies and I’ll have a hunt for the Victorian Engineer. Excellent info, thank you.
@ZL54JK85 жыл бұрын
@@doncoffey5820 How kind of you to reply Don. I greatly enjoyed your video. It was our Economic History lecturer at Glasgow who told his class to read The Railway Naavies. It sheds much light on the railway building period, but also gives a human dimension to the period that is I think largely ignored. I met E F Clark, the author of Bidder's biography - his great, great grandson, also an engineer, and he gave a talk about his forbear that was so interesting I looked out for his book, and indeed it doesn't disappoint. Oddly, Bidder is hardly known of nowadays, although everyone knows of his contemporary, IK Brunel. But Brunel considered Biddder to be his equal as an engineer. The book is hard to come by now, but is generally available second-hand (I got my copy through Amazon). It gives great insight into Victorian economic and social development. Bidder was a railway engineer in his own right, but was also a friend and colleague of the great railway engineer, Robert Stephenson so we learn about him as well. Happy reading!

Railway history and architecture is my favourite subject and you’ll find me waxing lyrical in many of my videos. I also appreciate feedback like this because I learn such a lot from it. Its a pleasure to discuss it with you.
@ZL54JK85 жыл бұрын
@@doncoffey5820 I think you'll find we are the ones who are learning from you! It's good when people who know a lot about something are prepared to work at sharing it with many others on You Tube. The Railway building age was indeed a time of amazing achievement. All stemming of course from the fruits of the Industrial Revolution in which Britain led the way (something now apparently forgotten by a modern "woke" elite determined to rubbish this country at every turn!). The remarkable development of the railways is taken for granted by most people apart from those such as you who know about it. Bidder belonged to first period of railway building and his biography delves deep into that. Of course Acts of Parliament had to be passed to allow individual lines to be built so the high-profile engineers such as John Rennie and Robert Stephenson being established in their profession had some advantage. Bidder himself, as well as being an accomplished engineer, also had from childhood a prodigious ability at mental arithmetic and was dreaded by his opposition when he appeared at parliamentary committees since he could look at any figures of projected costs and work out the full implications at first sight! I wonder how many of our railway lines were built only because things went well or badly at some committee hearing. Yes, you will enjoy his biography very much!

What a great trip...kind of takes me down memory lane. Way back in 73 (seriously), I remember as a 14 year old 'anorak' going over Shap summit with a pair of Class 50's. About a year later I did the same trip with a class 86. Somewhere around Tebay the 86 failed with, I think, some kind of 'flashover' on the pantograph. We were in the middle of a blizzard at the time. I remember being sat there for more than an hour before a Class 47 hauled us to Carlisle.

Thanks Don, great as ever. In January's 1983 (I think it was, or 1980), while visiting UK, I travelled the Cumbrian coast line from Carlisle to Preston. There had been wild storms and the wires on the WCML were down, preventing all passenger train running. Our diesel-hauled train was the first into Lancaster for a day or so, and passengers crowded onto it. Astoundingly, I saw a massive wave almost wash over the Whitehaven lighthouse at the end of the breakwater.

Great pickup from rest at Preston Don and such a smooth runner

Its actually quite a wide angle lens which makes it look much faster than it really is. The later films are better. I couldn’t get in the cab on that one although I have a general green light at TPE I still have to have a rubber stamp and I just turned up on that day as I was travelling to Edinburgh. I just asked the driver (who I know) if I could stick a camera in the opposite cab window.

Great video, but you missed telling us about the line that used to go to Arnside joining this line a couple of miles north of Milnthorpe. It's where you can see a line of trees on the left, then a small yard and building on the left. And the line from Ingleton. And lines to Kirkby Stephen at Tebay, Appleby and Keswick from Penrith. That would have made it a little more interesting. But otherwise, great. Thanks for that.

I try and include a bit of everything Richard. The occasional disused line does get mentioned.

I hate to say it, and I know its not their intended function, but these videos are prefect for my insomnia. A nice 30+ minute of this, and I'm falling asleep. I can really appreciate why the drivers need that "vigilance" device.

Hest Bank is the only point you can actually see the sea from the WCML isn't it. Some very interesting clouds from about Carnforth onwards.

I think you can see parts of Morcambe Bay but not 100% sure. I thought the clouds were dramatic too. Thanks as always for watching Andrei.

Did you hear about the flooding on the line today? There was a 5mph speed limit around Oxenholme I think, what are the dangers of running on a flooded line? Looking forward to the Blackpool video tomorrow. Cheers
@doncoffey58205 жыл бұрын
Dislodging the ballast is probably the worst but you’ve got to be careful around high voltage electricity too. I’ll make sure I’m about for the premier so can answer questions on the hoof!

I was at Wigan today and all the Virgin Trains trains heading south were at least 30 minutes late.

If the water level rises over the railhead then trains often have to be stopped because it can damage the train itself, and landslip is a risk factor too.

Water is the Railways worst enemy ask any CEng
@sw01ller5 жыл бұрын
It really depends if the water is running or not. If it’s moving it can take the ballast and track with it, which is obviously dangerous. Then if it’s so high you can’t see the track, how do you know it’s even there? The electricity thing is a bit of an issue too!
@anmolmehta71165 жыл бұрын
Lovely ride Don. What about a trip to the seaside town of Morecambe? It would indeed be nice if you could organise a trip there. Look forward to the high speed train ride in the meantime.

Eden Valley Junction (near the north end of the loop I believe) was where the line to Darlington via Stainmore summit joined the WCML. It featured a number of cast iron viaducts designed by Bouch (of Tay Bridge fame), and closed in 1962.
@doncoffey58205 жыл бұрын
So many of these old lines would improve capacity nowadays, Andrew but they were all lost. Such a shame.
@andrewphillips93915 жыл бұрын
@@doncoffey5820 that's so true... It's a line I would loved to have travelled, but had to content with walking the trackbed from near Kirkby Stephen up to the site of Belah viaduct, one of the cast iron ones, back in 1999. The summit signs at Stainmore are still visible from the A66

Thanks Don, another 'golden' travelogue. I had to pause at Shap Summit to do other things but thought I would comment anyway. Yes, Navvies - 'good' wages and terrible working conditions predating the Health and Safety Executive by around 100 years. Nice rainbow between Scout Green and Shap Summit!
@doncoffey58205 жыл бұрын
Yes, I profiled the hardship of the Navvies in the Chat Moss video. Its hard to imagine the conditions they lived under.

Great stuff Don, as per. Did you mean to say "Shop Summit" in the description? I remember that line when Class 50's ruled the road to Glasgow from Crewe. I was just a kid then, a Secondman at Stonebridge Park before moving across to Kings Cross in the days of headcodes and steam heating boilers.
@doncoffey58205 жыл бұрын
Oh blimey! I’ve got a rather useless spell checker with my iMac computer. I can spell apple with 4 z’s and it doesn’t bat an eyelid but then when I want to write Shap of course it wades in and insists that can’t be right. The strange thing is I try to proof read things but don’t always catch things. I remember the 50s when I was visiting Iveco Ford at Langley and I thought I’d seen them on the north Wales coast but I’m assured I didn’t. I joined rather late in 2003 but I should have done it years ago.
@acleray5 жыл бұрын
Don Coffey I believe the Class 50’s transferred to Waterloo for the Waterloo - Exeter service when electrification to Glasgow was completed. It’s also possible you did see them in Wales. I never worked on one but got rescued by one at Basford Hall, whilst working a Freightliner to Willesden, great job that, feet up looking into the back cab of a 50 for 2 hours.

Great video Don - Nice to see the line I travel on the most with my local station being Penrith. I was just wondering if you could provide any more info onto them yellow signs beside the track for example 59 and three dots with the dots being 1/4 mile, why did they zero it at Lancaster and not London like south of LAN is?
@doncoffey58205 жыл бұрын
Yes, so there are various ways of indicating mileage but that would be 59 3/4 miles. As for where the zero point is, they do some strange things and often change part way through a journey. I think it dates to when the lines were operated by different companies.
