I can't believe I spent six hours watching this over Memorial Day weekend yet couldn't stop and felt a hint of sadness there was no more. Then to finally see Tony at the end and the man looked as if he would rather be anywhere but there. So in honor of Dave and Meg here are 10 places Tony was thinking he would rather be. 10. The landfill 9. Turkish prison 8. Unemployment line 7. Having multiple wisdom teeth pulled 6. The Arctic circle without a coat 5. Replacing urinal cakes at Lollapalooza 4. Walking barefoot across the grill at Steak and Shake 3. Getting lazer eyelid removal. 2. Pushing a broom in Chernobyl 1. Sitting with his doctor discussing his ED

@@maxmerton Acceptability, at least in this case, is based on opinion and preference. In my opinion, Letterman was fascinated by Parsont's incredible intelligence and autonomy. I can't see any other reason why he spent three years giving her a special place in his program. Focusing on the fact of his being white or being privileged is in this case not the core of what is happening. It is valuable to see how an intelligent and self-possessed woman is being respected and given a public audience so that old prejudices have a chance to wither in the face of excellent example.
@maxmerton3 жыл бұрын
@@david203 respected?! Don’t me make laugh. He didn’t care about her at all. As for *not* being about privilege, it’s amazing how often that claim is made by those in a position of privilege. But how generous of you to describe a woman as intelligent and self-possessed. She has a job. Millions of women have jobs, FFS. Do you think she requested or wanted a public audience? He wasn’t making her dream of fame come true; he was being a perverted show-off.

His daytime talk show in 1980 (The Letterman Show, prior to "Late Night") was even more goofy in the same way with running gags, recurring themes, peripheral characters, etc. It didn't work well as a daytime show so NBC offered him a nighttime slot ('82 - '93). Because no individual - woman or otherwise - is likely worth staking a career on the gamble at that level. Unwanted flirtation is seen as "unwanted" before it's seen as "flirtation" at this point, and talk shows are both "work" FIRST for the one targeted as well as the one initiating. Furthermore, there's often no definitive way to tell if you're getting on someone's nerves until (usually) "she" is pointedly annoyed, and by then it's "too late". Don't blame the hosts.lol
