It doesn't take someone with a background in construction to know how it's done. :/ I've had this happen to me in the past, but the difference was it was my living room carpeting that was needing 100% replacement for a similar issue, as well as the kitchen tiling and counters. Im a Project Manager for a disaster restoration company; I'm not defending the poor workmanship, as my guys do better then this, and would never leave s safety hazard like the countertop bracing (I sub out cabinet people to do this for me that specialize in cabinets and countertops.) However, I do want to give you the context, that insurance companies dictate how much we can charge for mitigation, and the amount is so low that we have to pay our guys barely over minimum wage in order to stay in business. Because of this most water techs are 18-21 year old kids that are working an entry level position with little to no experience. basically, the guys doing the work might as well be called in from McDonalds... Again not an excuse, this falls on management but some context as to who did that. Insurance is a joke...
@jwstone474 ай бұрын
I am also in the same field smaller company am the tech , project manager and estimator .. I do remove the cabinets , I have been know to temp support counter tops on the wall but not islands so I'm with them on that but when he said he would take the floor up one board at a time that's BS, that's glued down engineered viner wood flooring .every bite of that floor that was removed came out in splinters.. Main thing I would say is a water damage mitigation tach is not there to make it easy for the contractors repairing the damage they are there to demo the wet materials sanitize the area and dry it so it can be repaired
@CGT804 ай бұрын
@@jwstone47 Exactly! Even a snap together floor would have to be completely removed back to the end of the water damage, all the way across the room. You can't easily just replace the last 2/3rds of each row and then finding the same flooring can be impossible. The guys only dried it out and made it safe with temporary supports. The screws at the bottom are not holding load, just stabilizing. Sure, I would have used 2 or 3 screws in each joint. Hammering on nails into 2x4's under a stone top would be just stupid. Screws are easier, faster, and safer for the top. There is also a such thing as structural screws.......timberlock. Decking screws are just fine and are my choice for form work and repairs on framing. They are a bitch to demo without backing out the screws, so the strength is there. I have done insurance work on water damage buildings and would come in after the clean up guys. They took out only what was necessary and leave it up to the contractor to decide how to best restore it after it is safe. With 30 years in a bunch of trades, but starting in paint and finish work and now doing underground and equipment operating and having 20+ years in welding and fabrication, that house isn't that big of a deal, as long as there wasn't water inside the walls. Since I was also a pressure washing pro (we used to do Dodger Stadium and LA Staples center every year along with many restaurants) we had more options on the cleaning and drying side and I did all the work on commercial suites between tenants for property managers. Repairing plumbing and doing electrical was part of it. The managers had us do the cleanup and repairs when they had floods in office buildings and then they started having us change angle stops and supply lines when we would flip the suites and I changed out all the water heaters if they were old. It was better for them to let us do it all and prevent floods.
@caseymo74164 ай бұрын
As someone that’s also in the industry-for nearly a decade, I totally get what you guys are saying-but there are good adjusters out there (and bad ones-I know) but if you document every little thing and go to bat for the homeowner, it can go a very long way. It may be a fight, and the homeowner needs to be involved, but it can be done. Aside from the lack of support of the countertop-when I saw that exposed screw tip, it ENRAGED me!! The homeowner, a pet, a child could VERY EASILY get caught on that!! You don’t pull base or tack strips and leave it face up for someone to step on, just as that screw shouldn’t have been left exposed. This was sloppy work, period. If “my crews” were responsible for this and I caught wind of it-I’d raise hell!! Again, there are a ton of variables here and we see both sides-but for me personally, this was hard to stomach!
