It did back then it was a huge hit. The doobies we're big in the seventies and nothing for a long time. Then all the sudden they burst back on the scene with this new hit. I remember hearing it all summer long. I think that would have been 1988

I also think it doesn't get the attention cuz you know some people are they'll complain this one doesn't have Michael McDonald in it singing and a lot of people know the Doobie Brothers from the 1970s hits. kind of like some of those characters who will only listen to Van Halen with David Lee Roth and don't want to pay attention to any of the awesome stuff that came out in the '80s and the nineties of course with Sammy

1989 was such a big year for rock reunion albums, reunion tours, comeback hits, etc. And the Doobies managed a triple hat trick in that respect. Sadly like so many of their fellow comeback kids that year [ Alice Cooper, Donna Summer, The Bee Gees, Donny Osmond ] they just couldn't maintain the momentum. I saw them live with Chicago in about 2007 or so I think and they were terrific.

As soon as I heard this tune on the radio, I rushed out to get his album (vinyl, btw). Love this song, which is easily the highlight of an album that didn't, IMO, live up to the promise of this song. At that time, though this was a modest hit, getting regular spins on "classic rock" format, DB's sound was not trendy (among the fads of time were alternative or "college" rock, U2/REM-modeled rock, hair band, Brit pop and new wave, synth-pop/R&B, SRV-fueled blies revival) and, so, as I recall, the album did not sell well. I just don't recall a lot of folks my age (GenXers. I was 21), at least, purchasing it. Anyhow, this track is one of their unheralded best.

Daniel R 1989 was a quality year of the greats from the 60’s/70’s. These artists all had hits that year: Paul McCartney, Pete Townshend, Elton John, Billy Joel, Phil Collins, Aerosmith, Doobie Bros, Stevie Nicks, Chicago, Rod Stewart, Don Henley to name a few.

Awesome song. My favorite Doobies tune, among many great ones! And isn't it kind of funny.... seeing Pat Simmons with his clean 80's look! Wow. Love Pat and what a great musician! Never even met him, but also apparently a wonderful human being too.

Doobie music is DEFINATELY the doctor they're singing about! Super harmony, and the video shows they're having a blast singing it!! Usually, when bands put out a hit a decade or more after their heyday, it's so-so. The Doctor is as good as ANY of their hits - and they've got plenty to choose from! And now they've put out World Gone Crazy, about 40 YEARS after the band started up... and it's got great stuff, too!!!

No, it's about music generally. Otherwise they would have sang "Doobie music is the doctor...."

"Music is the doctor of my soul." That's on my screensaver. I couldn't imagine not feeling good about that thought. The song sets me soaring. I can listen to it over and over. Of course, it doesn't hurt that it starts with one of the greatest intros ever. Music IS the doctor of my soul. My music gets me through. I love to make music and I love to listen. I thank the Doobies for decades of great music and for this song, which I love dearly.

Love it. Rock does not get any better, especially when you see the Doobs live, like on 5/22/18 at the Smoothie Center, New Orleans (oh, Black Water, keep on rollin' with those Dark Eyed Cajun Women.) :) Richard :)

I remember either my mom (I think) or dad buying this on cassette and listening to this song all the time as a kid. My dad was a real big Doobie Brothers fan. I miss him dearly but I will carry on his traditions of good taste in music. I'm surprised at how popular this song is by the comments here. I think that, for my generation, the Foo Fighters might be one of these bands for us, seriously. Don't knock 'em until you've tried 'em. They are a rock legacy in the making in their own time.
