Thank you for the update video, I completely agree, weight is not the be all and end all of a bike, sure it’s always nice to feel a light bike, but it’s just a tiny piece in the overall weight combination of bike and rider, I have 2 Domane’s one SL6 with mudguards for winter and an SL7 Etap for summer, also 2 Bianchis, an Oltre aero bike and a Specialissima weighing 6.8 kilos all up including pedals, Garmin mounts and bottle cages etc, I’m no faster on the light Specialissima than I am on the Aero bike, in fact in some circumstances it’s the other way around, that gain from the lack of weight on the climb is outweighed by the outright speed of the aero bike on the flat sections! I can see myself buying a new Emonda as I would like a do it all bike on Disc brakes, I have considered an SLR but think it will be an SL7 Etap, and probably I will just buy the frame and build it myself with my choice of components as the 20mm set back seat post needs to be changed for the 5mm set back for me, and those 100mm reach bars are just too long, as you suggest with carefully selected components I think I can build an SL7 Etap at around 7.5 kilos including pedals and Garmin mounts etc which really isn’t bad, but there is no way any average rider can tell any difference by saving a few hundred grams, as you noted we stuff our pockets with things, add heavy water bottles etc, my bike feels no different on full bottles to how it does on empty bottles, I noted that when doing an Everesting last summer, not carrying bottles to begin with and lasted being forced to carry bottles because of the heat, the bike felt just the same, yet I am still one of those who will try to build as light as possible 😂 it’s all in our minds when it comes to weight! 😊

Awesome review if this bike. It seems the 2022 is not much different. I test rode one (SL5) and now it's burning a hole in my pocket. I agree that although it's not the lightest bike, it is a better made bike. Really comfortable, fast, stable, handles well, efficient. I really appreciate the 1.5 geometry, threaded BB, and the seat mast as opposed to the hidden wedge that seems to always creek and make noise. Also, the traditional but forward looking shape of the frame as opposed to the popular but ugly dropped stays. Trek did their homework and made a bike for the people. It overlaps as a great allrounder and great upgrade platform to be make race ready. The SL5 is the best value to upgrade wheels and tires IMO but a great bike overall. BTW, your buddies Domane is phyre!

I’ve had my SL6 Pro for a month - it’s a brilliant bike and agree with all your comments in the review - incidentally I switched out the wheels to my Roval CL50 with 28mm GP5000 setup tubeless - the difference is amazing. Bike climbs really well but the real difference comes on the flats, you really do notice the details Trek have added to make the bike more aero - it may be a few grams heavier but that’s more than made up for (and then some) by the aero gains - you used the word ‘balanced’ which sums it up perfectly for me. i've bought an Emonda SL5 disc brakes in 2020. My first carbon bike and it perfectly fit for me. The only thing that disappointed me was the original wheels too heavy for me. Very difficult to drive when i'm tired or when i come back to my job (38 kms). I've changed the wheels for a new Fulcrum carbon wheels set and it definively change my bike. Lighter, easier , reactive.

I'm getting the regular SL6 model soon. I think it makes more sense, because you get to shave off a lot of weight when you pick your own wheels. I did some digging and without even touching the groupset (or selling both my kidneys) i can shave it down to 7,5 kg. that's pretty damn cool in my opinion. great review, thanks !

Buy the sl frame and put Bontrager xxx saddle and bottle cage, slr seat mast cap, rsl bar/ stem, rsl 37 wheels, 1st gen etap disc group. That should make the bike within range of slr.

Great video, thanks. I actually came across your video just after getting this exact model (minus the Aeolus wheelset) so it’s good to hear what people think of the mid range 2021 Emonda. I’ve done 90miles on mine from when I got it 3 days ago, and fully agree on your comments. It really is keen to turn, great downhill and has been a joy so far. Loads of feedback from friends on the design (especially no drop seat stays!). I’ve moved from a Synapse, so it was always going to be different, which also worried me a bit about the dimensions. My 54 came with a long seat mast so had to back and change it. Thanks again, I don’t regret my decision at all and good to see someone else with similar thoughts on the bike 👍

@@g4rymw110 its a tough one to call. at 5'8 id probably lean toward the 52. I have long arms and inseam of 32". At a 54cm for me it is noticeably longer than my previous bike like i said, so it depends on what your are used to. now i've done nearly 500 miles on it i don't regret my choice of bike or size. i've lowered the front 2 spacers and still feel fine on it. perhaps a set of wheels in the near future to replace the standard Paradigms...

@@markrobinson3920 i'm 5'9 and fit my 54 right. i've just ticked over 500 miles now on it and don't get back ache etc. a 56 for me would be too big for sure. As the video says the geometry is a tad unusual, so i'd suggest trying it out. perhaps even at 5'9 / 180cm you may even look smaller...

Thanks for the great review. Just bought this exact bike today (cheaper than the 2023 model). Swapped out the wheels for a set of Fulcrum Racing Zero Carbon DB units in 28mm. Carbon bars are going on and a better saddle. I too have a Madone 2012/13 (the factory white, grey, red and light blue). Swapped out the brakes for Ultegra and have Campy Shamals C17 units. One of the best bikes ever made IMO. Hoping this Emonda setup will rival my Madone. Cheers

Just on your comment about frame flex causing disc rub. I have a 2020 SL6, in my case it was actually the wheelset when I went stiff DT Swiss it cured it.

I was going to comment that the rubbing issue is likely the wheelset, not the frame. Also, the tracking of the bike straight has to do with the rake/trail figure, not its "aerodynamic" properties.

If you move away from the corporate spin and just look at the bike as a product you’re going to buy and use for enjoyment the Emonda SL is a great choice. As usually happens when a product is “typed” by the manufacturer, the lines get blurred with time. If the Emonda is a dedicated climbing machine why did my SL7 come with a mid-compact crank and only 30 teeth on the big cog? Have I any intention of changing it? Nope, works just fine. TREK savvy onlookers often comment that it figures that I’d buy the climbing bike (of the 3) and I’ve stopped correcting them. Awesome universally enjoyable example of Carbon Fiber engineering without any artificial ride enhancements. Weight? Seems perfect to me.

I test road it and thought it was a decent ride. I wasn’t really into the metallic paint on the top tube. The sun reflected into my face. The SL5 has much better paint options imo but is too heavy.

i always hear comments from my "recreational rider" friends like "the bike is heavy"..."ok, take off your shirt, look yourself in mirror, visually size your love handles" that's what i say. If anyone really really wants to get a lean bike, spend your after-tax money on wheelsets then, not the frame and components, the OLCV 500 w/ 105 is no different than a OLCV 800 w/Ultegra as long as you don't compete Tour De France

Gettin the etap sl7 today. Upgraded the wheels to rsl, the saddle to the pro model and handlebar to the one piece. Should weigh about 16.75lbs in size 52

Land of Bikes can confirm she’s not too heavy. Tried stock parts before making the upgrades. Was 2.3 mph faster than the previous rig I was using on undulating roads that max out at 10% grade. Old rig was a Look 585 Campy super record (14.5 lbs, retailed for 1.8x the price of the sl7). The aerodynamic gains on this bike are incredible. A true undervalued super bike

TMatsushita height is 67.25in and inseam about 28in. I was between a 52 and 54 and sized down and paired with the more aggressive (400 x 110) one piece Aeolus bar stem combo

First, nice review. The 2021 Emonda looks like an exciting bike. I am puzzled however. When the 2020 Domane (an endurance bike) added weight and got more aero, people thought it was terrible. But when a climbing bike adds weight (admittedly, much less weight than the Domane did) and gets more aero, then it's okay? And I would also point out that the Domane probably felt sluggish and heavier in part because it went to 32s and slower rolling tires. I mention this because I bought the 2020 Domane SL7etap, put on Conti 28 tires and despite being "heavy" it doesn't feel sluggish at all to me. As you mention, weight can be important but it's not the end all. In the end, the 2021 Emonda will be a better bike than the '20 version despite the weight increase.

Yah, initial impressions on the Domane focused a lot on weight. I think people were surprised at the amount it increased. But as you mention there are parts or components on any build that can make it more sluggish. The guy I’m riding with in my videos is my uncle, he’s 58, weighs 180lbs 81.5kgs, rides a Domane SLR with XXX wheels, and is a beast on the climbs. So there are a lot of variables. People are still hating on this new Emonda’s new weight though, it always gets he most attention. But as I mentioned Trek has been going away from focusing on weight and adding quality improvements which I think is a good move, I’m sure the next versions will focus back on weight a bit once they dial in these new models.

Hi Just bought this and have done approx 200kms so far. On longer climb could hold a good pace and on flat definitely faster than my old bike and feeling the aero benefit. Still getting used to the saddle, feels different at start of ride but settle in after a few kms and no soreness afterwards (which I am prone to). Feels very nimble cornering and of course disc brakes build confidence. Worried that the 11-30 cassette may not be low enough for Gran Fondos so then need to change out the derailleur which is annoying for a climbing bike, all other brands come with 11-32... Agree the wheels aren't the lightest but since no weight limit, suitable for touring and also very stiff. I'm 160cm and the 47 fits like a glove out of the box.

Great video as usual. Your comment about the seat mast giving you a clicking sound is interesting to me. As I have a clicking when I pedal on my 2021 Domane and thought it was coming from the BB? Could it be from the seat mast, although the seat post clamp is different?

It could also be coming from the saddle. If you give your seat and seat mast a forceful wiggle when you are off the bike and can recreate the noise, also, if when you are riding you move in the saddle, give it some hard bounces when not pedalling, if you can recreate the noise then it’s the seat mastcap or saddle. If it’s the saddle add a little chain lube to where the rails meet the seat. If it’s only when you are pedalling then it could be shoes, cleats, or BB. Unlikely to be the Bb on a T47 so again give it a strong wiggle with your hands to see if there is any play. If the seat mast cap is as low as it can go, then it’s likely clicking. Hope that helps.

Yeah, the saddle left me rubbed and sore in the same spot on my '20 Madone SLR. Also wanted to like it, but it found the bottom of a drawer after a couple weeks. As to bike weight... People who dwell on bike weight should probably shed a little themselves. Just sayin'.

Losing any kind of weight off me is 100% definitely not safely doable. I have found the Emonda SLR series PLENTY light exactly as is. 55Kg of combined cyclist + bike weight leaves no room for excuses and certainly no room for reasonably losing weight from myself.

madone slr 7/9 (upgraded to sram red and 454) here. Weight is okay as long as it stay under 8.2, I installed an aero bar and that got it to close to 9 kg at its maximum, that point on I feel its really heavy and hard to start against on and off wind gusts. FTP is around 3.7wkg for a ref, it must be my noodle legs.

The Domane has the same seat tube issue. I'm 6'2" with a 58cm 2020 Domane and I have to ride with the seat as low as it will go. I really should switch to the shorter one, but it's £200!

Any thoughts on the H2 vs H1.5 frame? I have been riding an old Emonda SL 5 with an H2 frame and am considering getting the new Emonda. I appreciate that the geometry and fit are different but is the comfort equivalent? Is the new frame significantly more race-oriented or can it be fit close to the old bike? Thanks

H1.5 will be a bit longer and lower up front than H2, but can be accounted for with stem length and height.

I know it doesn't make an appearance until the SLR 6 at $8700cdn, but if I were buying a new Emonda (even an SL 5) I would pony up for the Aeolus RSL bar/stem. I think these new frames look silly with a two piece set up.

Re weight: the only way to make a truly lightweight bike is still to use rim brakes. Apparently people weren't buying those so trek stopped making them. Thus our bikes are heavier. Discs add about a pound or more of weight. Ironically since everyone seems to like the lack of dropped seat stays on this bike, it's the one thing I wish was different. It's a simple change to make which has no large affect on weight, improves aerodynamics and generally improves comfort when it's done right. I also just think they look fast. But visuals are different strokes for different folks.

They’re definitely extremely different just based on weight and frame construction/design concept.

Between this and the TCR Advanced Pro 1, there is clearly a value gap (no power meter, heavier wheels, and a heavier body). That being said, the Trek SL6 Pro is just esthetically more pleasing and seems like it would be more fun to own long term. Is there anything else I’m missing here? Been riding a few months, so this would be my first carbon road bike.

I have a 2020 Emonda and really like it. However, it seems Trek is focusing on aesthetics and marketing. For 2021, the prices went up and the components and specs stayed the same. Also, the weight increased while they brag about light weight.

Wheels for sure. You'll notice it instantly when accelerating. Less rotational weight.

Jason Madsen that’s a very good question. I prefer the novelty of the wireless system that SRAM offers, but I prefer how smooth and dialled the Di2 is. I’m thinking we’ll see a major overhaul of Di2 in the next year or so, so that’s what I’m waiting for. You can’t go wrong with both sets tho. Less wires make the bike look much nicer, it’s the future for sure.

The best way to size the bike is to get on one at your local shop or get a fitting done on a fit bike so they can simulate the sizing. It’s difficult to have a guide because every persons proportions are different. If you have long legs, short torso and short arms this bike will be tough to size, long torso long arms and short legs and you’ll likely ride a bigger frame. It just doesn’t fit into the same mold as their Emonda or Domane. Just beware when purchasing.

It’s always tough to say, it depends on your limb length also. At your height I’d assume likely a 60cm. If you can handle a lot of drop then maybe 58, but that’s a strong maybe. If you can get your local bike shop I’d suggest getting fitted and jumping on one.

He's not using the stock Aero headset spacers - those are egg shaped and have a cableway built into them that feeds the cables from the stem down into the opening in the frame above the headset bearing cover. Look for a pic of a stock bike with a stock uncut steer tube - most of the glory shots online have the cockpit slammed, so you don't see the stock aero spacers. Also, a bar with internal routing like my Enve SES will be far more tidy, since the cables exit under the bar and closer to the stem than the traditional "under the tape, and back towards the stem" of external routing Granted, its not as slick as a full on internal bar, into the stem hollow and down through the steer tube full internal route... But done right its pretty tidy.

The one you can get right now… and the one that fits you best. Getting fit on one at your local shop, ideally on a fit bike, is the best option. Going by price is always tough because some companies have more expensive frames while other spec better. So it depends what your priorities are. I haven’t risen the Scott so it’s hard for me to say. What I do know is the Emonda is a great race bike with good race geometry. The frame is very good quality with a good balance of stiffness to compliance ratio.

That’s probably true too, but I did ride my 2020 SL yesterday after riding the new Emonda for almost two weeks. The bike felt great and a bit lighter, especially in the wheels which I was surprised to notice. What I was also surprised to notice was how flexy the frame felt when descending and cornering hard. Not that it was anything extreme or bad but the new frame is definitely stiffer.

I purchased EMONDA SL6 pro. The screw which constraints the turn of the handlebar was broken. Thus the turn went beyond the limit and the ring marked go-go-go hitted the frame. The paint got damaged. I brought the bike to my supplier and they talked to TREK. TREK installed a new screw and new ring go-go-go. TREK didn't want to repair the scratches on the paint of the frame caused by the limitless turning. Now I have a new super bike with scratches on the frame. I didn't expect that from TREK. Low customer support and poor warranty. Bad experience. I feel dissapointed. The bike itself is a super bike but the warranty service does not work as it should.

I’d say significantly, I’ll have a full review in my next video but the bike roles way faster, could be a combo of things but I’m thinking the wheels are the major reason why the bike roles faster. I had constant variable to test the before and after against and noticed a big difference, I’ll explain more in my next vid.

A bit confused, I remember when Trek launched the new, at the time, Emonda which had a frame weight similar. Feels like a bit of a backwards progression, I think their new Tarmac is far superior. There are many rabbit holes to dive down showing how much weight you would need to drop to make up for aero. Interesting how this new Aethos talks about ride quality but nothing about speed. I never dug too deep but I’m guessing they built it to be a “riders” bike based on feel and not really about speed. Which is great because I’d take that or the Domane over a Tarmac or my Emonda any day on a long ride.

Thanks for the informative video, given that you had troubles getting the seat height low enough would that equate the opposite way too? I have ridden 56cm bikes since I was 18, and I run a 80cm seat height from center of BB, if you look at the geo that would be impossible on a 56, do you know what the max out would be for the 56 with the long seat post?

According to their charts the highest the 56cm can go is 765mm (76.5cm) from BB to the rails,so if your saddle has 3.5cm from the rails to the top of the seat you would just make it.
