Great review, as always. You forgot to mention the amount of customization, especially for the console versions. Being able to change the FoV, the amount of motion blur or the UI color in consoles is great and more developers should implement that.

After looking at some negative Steam reviews... I'm not so sure about this being a day-1 pickup. - Low ammo - Weird UI - Clunky glory kills - More cutscenes that also take control away from you - Pushy tutorials - Meaningless progression system Those were the main issues mentioned.

Allow me to address these criticisms: -Yes, ammo is low compared to the last game, but that's why you have the chainsaw. The game put emphasis on you monitoring your ammo, health and armor more often which makes things intense in the heat of the battle and more deep and tactical than Doom 2016. -You can optimize the UI whether it be the colors or what you don't want taking up the screen -Glory kills feel just as good to pull off as they were in the last game, I'm not getting that one at all -Cutscenes mostly only show up after you clear a room of enemies to show the door opening so you can progress. It's a little jarring at first but you get used to it. -Tutorials can become a bit too much but you can always disable them -Yeah I do have to agree on the progression bit as you mainly just unlock stuff like skins and what not, but it doesn't negatively impact the experience. I did read some of these reviews on Steam the day before my pre-order copy came in the mail and I got a little skeptical but I can thankfully say I'm having a great time overall.

The jump puzzles are very annoying and destroy the immersion. They should not even integrate them in the game. This is not fucking Super Mario. I lost a lot of time jumping on the fucking ledges, I don't think I will replay it ever. This is a real let down for me. Second, the spaces are not that big actually and you are often crowed with many mobs jumping on your head because you have no place to move. It feels more claustrophobic than DOOM 2016...

Doom Eternal is a definite purchase for me even before I watched this video. I fondly remember Doom 2016 with its challenging, brutal, visceral and fast paced combat. Visually, the game looked great. It had solid enemy and level design. More so than any prior Doom game that came before it, Doom 2016 placed a major emphasis on constant mobility. Glory kills were crucial when it came to restoring Doom Slayer's health and using the chainsaw to gain extra ammo. Certain enemies had to be prioritized when compared to others in terms of their threat level. Every enemy was unique in it's design, as well in it's attack pattern and weakness. Each enemy had a weapon that worked best against it. As a result, the game forced the player to re-think his or her strategy on the fly. The same holds true for Doom Eternal, which plays very similar to Doom 2016 when it comes to it's core gameplay mechanics. Of course, there have been some new additions along the way. New to Doom Eternal is the Equipment Launcher, which allows the player to switch between different grenade types on the fly. The Flaming Belch sets enemies on fire and it stuns them, which causes them to drop additional armor. Frag grenades explode and cause massive damage. The Ice Bomb freezes enemies over a large area, which causes additional damage. The Doomblade is a new addition to the Praetor suit, which is a retractable blade that is mounted onto the forearm. It causes increased melee damage while also allowing the player to penetrate an enemy's defenses. There is the Crucible, which is an energy sword that was obtained at the end of Doom 2016. There are also new demon types that the player will have to contend with. As challenging as Doom 2016 was, Doom Eternal turns things up a few notches. Audio design is impressive with solid weapons sounds and a very appropriate soundtrack that ramps up during the game's many frantic combat scenarios. The double sprint ability allows the player to jump over large gaps, while also offering some extra mobility. Doom Eternal looks amazing with detailed character models and environments. Sure, there are low textures and you don't get the sound effect that you'd expect when a rock structure gets destroyed but those are minor issues in an otherwise impressive video game overall. With the chaos and fast paced nature of the combat, I highly doubt that anybody will be paying attention to those small issues. Doom Eternal focuses even more on mobility than Doom 2016 and considering how fast the enemies move, it would be very easy to get overwhelmed otherwise. Weapon mods make their return in Doom Eternal as well as Praetor suit upgrades. New to Doom Eternal are Runes, which allow the player to perform Glory Kills faster (Savagery), increase an enemy's stagger state (Dazed and Confused), etc.. Sentinel Crystals upgrade a player's health, armor and ammo, which are similar to Doom 2016's Agent Cells. Despite a few issues, Doom Eternal does a solid job of giving the player a solid challenge, while also being a blast to play. New additions offer an added layer of gameplay. They are not for everyone its true but the people who do enjoy them, myself included, have an absolute blast playing them.
