Both baby seals are a lot bigger than their peers. They both had cuts from their entanglements. Although the seals were already feeling compromised and vulnerable because of their injuries, they remained calm and we could work fast and release them as quickly as possible. Leading pinniped specialists advised us to avoid applying medicines to their wounds. Cape fur seals thrive in their natural habitat, and seawater acts as a very efficient wound cleaner.

Two pups saved! The first one will be ok, the second one was very close to having severe issues. Thankfully OCN caught it and saved it. Now it can heal and get back to living a healthy life once again.

It is so cool seeing how sturdy those pups are when they get stampeded by adults. Great that the colony at Cape Cross seem to be doing fine recent videos have had a bit too many seal deaths, that would signify that there is a lack of fish in the ocean.

Our efforts are just a drop in the bucket compared to the millions of tonnes of trash entering the world's oceans every year. We are unfortunately not solving the problem, but only treating the symptoms of the plastic crisis with our rescues. These videos aim to show the consequences of this pollution and create a change to tackle its roots - namely our addiction to single-use plastics, the lack of law enforcement at sea, and the shortcomings of the recycling industry.

It sounded like the mega-pup said "bye-bye" when it came out of the net. Then it was sadly amazing how much damage was done to the little pup from such a small string. Besides that, it was interesting to watch the river of seals running by starting around :30 and beautiful to see them going into the ocean at :54. Thanks for that view - and that editing.

Why are so many of these fishing lines knotted into lethal loops? It looks deliberate.
@OceanConservationNamibia
@OceanConservationNamibia 14 күн бұрын
We do not believe these loops are deliberately tied to kill Cape fur seals, but they eventually do so. Fishermen have quicker and more effective ways to get rid of pinnipeds, especially at sea, where no one watches. Commercial fishing lines are often tied in loops on board fishing vessels to secure equipment or hang fish in the hold. Recreational fishing lines often get tangled or knotted, and anglers cut and discard them as they are unfortunately too cheap to be worth unravelling. Many studies show that fishing gear poses the greatest entanglement threat to marine wildlife. Fishing activities are inherently destructive and fully participate to the plastic crisis our oceans are now facing. We therefore encourage our viewers to stop eating seafood.

Was it Antoine who coined the term 'megapup' a few years ago? It perfectly describes them for sure 😂 The mothers of these two must've been feeding them cream. Horrible to see how a little, tiny piece of fishing line could so easily destroy these beauties 🌊🦭✂️🌍💙
