A very good video compilation, what I would like to know is why the Duchess and others have to drag a stinking 47, wheel driven generators can be fitted to each of the coaches for lighting and other electrical requirements. The 12 coaches is well within the capacity of the duchess and Coronation class of loco. I personally think the skinned Spam-Can was an unnecessary distraction, it didn't belong on LMS lines.

Michael, my thoughts entirely. It warmed the cockles of my heart to see the youngsters enjoying the sight and sound of a steam locomotive. I am 76, from an age where as kids we believed (and still do) that each steam locomotive was a real living thing with hisses and grunts especially on the slight incline to my local station. They will never witness however the glory days of steam when there were so many steam locos on the rail network and thundering through the station at high speed. What a wonderful thing the early enthusiasts did and now passed onto new generations, without them there would be no steam locos for the youngsters to watch and admire, THANK YOU doesn't seem to be powerful enough words, the time and money involved so precious.

If I had paid the small fortune to travel on one of these trains and found myself sitting at the rear of the rear coach right next to a noisy 47 I would have demanded a refund. Its a pity they cant just start up if needed as the sound of the steam engine is part of the experience.
@johnhatton11172 жыл бұрын
In days past steam was barred from beneath the wires because it was believed the exhaust would damage the wires. Steam was still allowed in parts, and 'where necessary' but there was always the risk of flashovers from fireirons etc coming into contact or close to the wires - hence the small white 'electric flash' plates as reminders. .

I am seriously puzzled. I grew up beside the Trent Valley main line in steam days, before the wires went up. Once they did, steam was banned south of Crewe, because is was too dangerout 'under the wires'. So how is it that it isn't now? (Engines had a yellow diagonal stripe on the cabside to indicate the prohibition.) In those days, the p/way gangs would either patrol the lines watching for lineside fires, or carry out controlled burnings on the batters.

And to think I used to see those beautifuil racehorses every single day as a child. Take me back to 1958!
@johnnew30962 жыл бұрын
Locomotives have had their boiler fittings amended by cutting back the length of some of the protruding bits so that the risk of flashovers is reduced to what is considered an acceptable risk.
@philclarke32032 жыл бұрын
Thanks. True. As John, below says, plus, I suppose experience has probably realised it is now safe.
@AndreiTupolev2 жыл бұрын
I think BR was excessively cautious or, if you want to be conspiratorial, did it so that there'd be no chance of steam replacing a failed electric, which would be embarrassing. They were still very reluctant to allow steam under the wires even in the 1970s, which was why steam wasn't permitted over the Settle & Carlisle for a long time
@johnnew30962 жыл бұрын
@@AndreiTupolev it was only some classes, not a total ban in the “not south of Crewe” era. Your point though probably has some grain of truth within it.

I Suspect steam on the mainline has not had to operate in temperatures of 40 Celsius before. I sure as hell wouldn't want to have been on the footplate today, it was unbearable, not everyone remembers the crew. what is interesting is often Notwork rail likes to blame steam for lineside fires, but its often found later on to be another cause altogether, but currently everywhere is tinderbox dry and it don't take much to get a fire going.
