Very sweet couple with 6 kids... positive attitude

Both houses were really nice. I laughed so hard when the homeowner swore about her profit on the build. She did an amazing job and should really consider a career in interior design.

I really like the French lady with the kids. Especially when she was hanging clothes on the fence. Most designers would have helped her for free to make the design a little more cohesive and practical. But hey, she likes it and so does he.

I can't believe that city couple didn't check if they were allowed to break through that wall, still less take over the space that is not part of the basement she bought. She should have a plan showing exactly what she bought. And she should know she's not the freeholder. The host of this show is so knowledgeable, I'm surprised she didn't state the obvious & tell them to check the foundations before digging out the basement. Even I know these things & I'm not a homeowner or renovation expert.
@myoldvhstapes3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that was embarrassing! These problems come up all the time on Homes Under the Hammer.
@jaybee41182 жыл бұрын
She almost certainly knew that she’s not the freeholder, if the person holding the freehold found out about this then it’s likely they also charge a ground rent that they’ll have to pay yearly. I think a lot of people don’t fully realise exactly what it means, especially in multi-dwelling converted properties in a place like London. It gets super complicated.

@AgentAO7 Жыл бұрын
If there’s one thing Alex & Ben should have spent on the interiors, it’s the kitchen. Doesn’t have to be expensive cabinets but at least some proper kitchen cabinets w/ a proper layout. I don’t mind the mismatch furniture since it can be replaced eventually.. But a proper kitchen is essential especially when you have that size of a family..

I liked Alexis' green walls. That interior isn't for everyone, with a little artistic touch and a major chill vibe. But what a horrible kitchen space. No space for storing utensils/food/ingredients etc. for a family of 8 people.

The Galbraith Family had big bedrooms. If I remember right, they had 4 bedrooms to hold the 12 children. They are, after all, the real life Cheaper By The Dozen. The book was written by two of the kids, as was the sequel, Belles On Their Toes.

Yes. I never understand why kids need their own rooms. Why do kids need any more privacy than what they can find with a closed bathroom door? Sharing rooms in childhood helps them with so many skills necessary for sharing living space as adults.

I'm so confused. How can you own a building but not the land it sits on? I guess things are different in England to here in Australia. :: As for Sarah's demonstration of what the loft conversion could look like, I feel that she has the right idea. But it is so unfair to present the current plan as plain black and white, and the proposed plan with coloured wallpaper etc. She knows that Alex is into elegance, so it would sway her decision. Subtle mind manipulation.
@myoldvhstapes3 жыл бұрын
I've watched hundreds of episodes of Homes Under the Hammer over the years. The lease problem is a constant theme- but UK properties being "leasehold" as opposed to freehold still confuses me. I get it when they mean that people who own a flat do not own the building's external walls and common hallways. But even houses without shared parts can be leasehold. It's a huge problem when the lease has less than 60 years left on it. 99+ is a safe number. The new owner needs to own a place for at least two years before he legally has the right to extend the lease by paying the leaseholder. Rarely, an owner can talk the leaseholder into buying the freehold outright.

The mom of 6 made me laugh when she got upset over the price her house was now worth. I don't like her "style" at all so if I were to buy her house I"d literally have to gut the kitchen and start over. The tub in the attic would need a wall and the color of the front would need to be changed. I wouldn't even offer her what she originally paid due to the amount of changes it would need. JMO
