I never thought much of this until I had an Israeli coworker. One day she was talking about her family and I realised that they all came from Europe. She is the first in the family to be born in Israel. And yet, it is people like her and her family who are considered to be the rightful owners of that land. If we trace back 2000 years, perhaps her ancestors would have lived in what is Israel today. But if their ancient linage allows them to claim Palestine land then all Australians should have claim of Great Britain and all Americans can just go back to Europe and claim land for themselves.

But a lineage that has watered down through mixture with Western European, Southern European, Eastern European and North African people. *I live in Amsterdam.* Have lived here my whole life. I'm also a fan of Ajax. I followed the news surrounding the coming of the Maccabi fans closely. I got my news from several different local sources and saw most of the footage available of everything that happened. Let me tell you that you are completely right and I myself was also shocked by a lot of large media outlets also in the Netherlands only portraying one side of the story and dramatizing and simplifying it. However, while you are right in saying it was wrongly and onesidedly reported, you yourself are also only telling one side of the story here. _Let me tell you chronologically what happened:_ Before the Maccabi fans arrived, a pro-Palestinian protest was announced to take place in front of the stadium where the football match would be played. Such protests have been very common in Amsterdam since there are a lot of people who sympathize with Palestine here. Be it people from the large Muslim community we have here, other Amsterdam citizens who are simply anti-genocide (like me) or even actual Palestine refugees. The F-side, the core of the Ajax fanbase (read: Ajax hooligans). announced a few days before the game that they would not tolerate politics in or around their stadium and that they would "firmly intervene" if "needed". Seeing as these are football hooligans saying this, the Amsterdam municipality decided to move the protest a few hundred meters away in fear of riots between Ajax hooligans and pro-Palestina protesters breaking out. So the protest was not allowed to occur in front of the stadium, but would take place close to there. Then the Maccabi fans arrived from Israel. The night before the day of the match, a smaller group of Maccabi supporters were seen tearing down Palestinian flags while cheering and even burning one. There is footage of this, seemingly filmed by the supporters themselves. They also got into a small fight with a taxi driver who supported Palestine. They tried to attack him and damaged the taxi. In response many other taxi drivers and some youngsters on scooters gathered and tried to attack and intimidate the Isreali supporters. They found shelter near a casino in the center and eventually the violence subsided and the fans could return to their hotels. There is footage of one Israeli being chased into a canal and forced to say "Free Palestine" while swimming. On the day of the match, they were celebrating in large numbers on the Dam square in the center of Amsterdam. Occasionally some passersby yelled something at them or threw up their middle finger, to which the Israeli fans responded agressively. However, there were no real conflicts here, because they were constantly guarded by police. On their way to the stadium there is I think the first footage of the shouting the racial slurs against Arabs and celebrating the genocide that their country is commiting in Gaza (although they might have also uttered these the night before). Of course it took a little time for the content of these slurs to be translated and get back to Amsterdam locals. During the game, like you mentioned, the Maccabi fans continued to show an absolute lack of respect by whistling through the minute of silence for the hundreds of deaths in Spain. Outside the stadium some Pro-Palestinian protesters were fighting a bit with the police that was present, trying to get closer to the stadium from where their protest was moved to (a couple hundred meters away). This didn't escalate further and after the match the fans were escorted back to the city center by police. Once in the center they immediately started gathering weapons in the form of wooden sticks, lead pipes, stones and that kind of stuff. They paraded around as a group sometimes suddenly running and sometimes even trying to attack people (who most likely yelled something at them or flipped them off). The police was constantly around the group of Maccabi supporters trying to contain them while simultaneously keeping angry locals from getting to them. More and more people gathered near the group of Israeli's that was protected and contained by police. People around the group of hooligans were chased away by police, but the hooligans themselves were allowed to occasionally throw stones without repercussions from the police. Although they weren't allowed to move as police had surrounded them and eventually escorted them back to their hotels. However, the next morning it became clear that there were a lot of seperate incidents of Israeli fans who were alone or in a smaller group that got attacked by Amsterdam locals. A lot of videos surfaced of Amsterdam taxi drivers or youngsters on scooters (often with Middle-Eastern roots) attacking Israelis individually. People were followed and scolded at and asked for where they're from and to show their passports and in multiple instances assailed. There is footage of Israeli individuals being chased and hit, surrounded and attacked, kicked to the head while on the ground, and I even saw a video of someone filming from inside their car hitting someone with it and yelling "kankerjood" (literally: "cancer jew"). This is the side of the story that did also happen and that you haven't made clear in this video. I have to say that honestly it does seem like the violence was unfortunately largely committed by Amsterdam citizens and less by the Israeli hooligans. It is very important, however, to emphasize that the hooligans behaviour when they came to the city was extremely shocking and excessive. And it is perfectly understandable for people sympathizing with Palestina and especially for Palestinian refugees or others who more directly feel the pain in Gaza to be outraged by this and I can even understand not being able to resist your anger and wanting to retaliate against these hateful hooligans. BUT the extent to which the violence occured is disproportional to say the least. Individuals were chased and attacked and groups communicated with each other to find and expose "zionists" so they could attack them. Coincidentally, a day later the memorial of the "Kristallnacht" would take place. This is why the parallel was made. Amsterdam as you may know has a painful history concerning our large Jewish population and some Amsterdam citizens have grandparents or older ancestors that have lived through (or didn't survive) the events of the Holocaust in WWII. I know some people who have been afraid to go out of their homes or to social gatherings the past week. The majority of Amsterdam supports the Pro-Palestine (and mainly anti-genocide) narrative. And there are a lot of Muslims who are even more fanatic in their approach. But we have to acknowledge that there is also a large Jewish community here that largely also condemns what the Israeli government is doing, but still wants to be proud of their Jewish identity. In the end, the portrayal of the violence as simply anti-semitic is incorrect and is used also by the Dutch government to further demonize the Islamic community and the Morrocan Dutch people. The violence was mostly an outrage because of the horrible provocations by the Israeli's. And there were certainly some bad apples who might also have a general anti-semitic stance, but the violence was mostly anti-Israel, anti-genocide and especially anti hooligans that support genocide and that come to your city tearing down flags and intimidating. The craziest thing is that all of this could have been prevented by simply not letting these insane hooligans come. The mayor of Amsterdam has done an amazing job in my opinion as one of the few people of authority in the Netherlands who has been willing to look at both sides and sympathize with both sides in this Israel-Palestina conflict. Which is important in a city that has such a large Muslim AND Jewish community. But in this instance she should of course never have allowed football hooligans from a country comitting genocide into our city. In the end we are letting this extremely serious and sensitive and complex conflict being fought out by football hooligans and kids on scooters. Some of the least nuanced groups in society fighting out an extremely nuanced conflict in a generally very tolerant city that houses people related to both sides of the conflict.
