The Scirocco was initially designed in the VW studio in Simi Valley in 2005. Robert Lesnik was the designer, I was his digital modeller. Together in 3 weeks, we turned his sketch idea into a digital model that was milled full size in Wolfsburg for the board to see. They liked it, and the project was signed off. It was then continued in Germany and looks very much the same as Roberts first sketches.

I'm from Singapore and I currently own a 2011 Scirocco 1.4 TSI for 3 months so far. Although the practicality lacks in certain areas, it really is a fun car to drive not to mention how good it looks exterior-wise. It really brings me back to the last days of simple automaking in the late 2000s/early 2010s. One thing for certain that I'm not really a big fan of when it comes to the Scirocco is the massive A-pillars, you really gotta crank your neck to look out for curbs or anything of that sort whenever you're making right turns in a junction. It does however have an infamous reputation in Singapore because of the fact that many delinquents favour the Scirocco, there have been many cases and incidents where Sciroccos would get into stupid accidents and even put other drivers in danger, just a little fact.

It's a different culture here in the USA. In Germany, you have TUV inspections, which do thorough inspections on ALL vehicles to be driven on public roads and can fail a car on even such things as windshield wipers, bad tires, and even minor cracks on the windshield. The USA is pretty heavily regulated, but that's primarily for new cars. For aftermarket and used cars, it's kind of like the Wild Wild West out here. Cracks in the windshield, bald tires, etc. aren't likely to keep your car off the road as it would in Germany. Seriously, would you really want to let a car on the Autobahn at triple digit speeds with bald tires and bad brakes?

This build really shows how modular VW's cars are, and how skillful people can take advantage of it. I've got a '09 Skoda Octavia RS estate, which is basically a Mk6 Golf GTI with a different design, and some of the Golf's extras were unavailable in the Octavia. I had the same radio/GPS system in my Octavia as this Scirocco has, but switched it for a VW Composition Media PQ. Now I have CarPlay, Android Auto, built-in Bluetooth (opposed to a module under the front passanger's seat) and DAB+ as well (AFAIK, US versions had satellite radio tuner instead of DAB+). The steering wheel controls do work as well. It would be worth looking into this upgrade for the future owner of this Golfrocco :) (there's also the Discover Media PQ, which adds GPS, but who needs that with CarPlay or Android Auto?)
@MrJordanwain Жыл бұрын
I was hoping this was going to be a floor pan conversion. I wonder if you could take a us Jetta or similar and convert it to a us legal Octavia. I would have thought just using the running gear wouldn’t be enough to use the us spec cars vin.
@AttilaSVK Жыл бұрын
@@MrJordanwain the pre-facelift Octavia Mk2 is basically a Golf Mk5, the post-facelift is a Mk6, and the Mk3 Octavia should be based on the Golf Mk7. At least that's how it is here in Europe, the US spec Golf might differ. I believe guts of a Mk6 GTI could be used to convert a post-FL Mk2 Octavia RS to meet US specs. Maybe even the wiring loom could stay as well, as the engines are very similar (CCZB in the Golf and CCZA in the Octavia). The only thing what is questionable, are the headlights. Speaking of US spec VWs, I would trade my '09 Octavia RS for a US spec Golf Mk6 with the 2.5 liter inline-5 engine, because I love the sound of an I5 :) (had a '98 Volvo V70 2.5 TDI before, and a '98 C70 T5 as well)

They stopped manufacturing these in 2017 anyhow. On interest why don't you like the GTI ? What type of cars do you like ?
@GetIrked Жыл бұрын
@MrDuncl Realistically, I love everything about the GTI except its appearance... it's always seemed, well, frumpy (don't shoot me). I mean, styling is obviously subjective and really shouldn't make a difference since it has no effect on the capability of a vehicle. Ironically, this fact should be particularly true for me - my daily driver is a 2011 Miata FRHT and my motorcycle is a 2015 Triumph Speed Triple, neither of which have styling that I really like but performance I LOVE. My problem with Volkswagen was the modern Scirroco was amazing to me because it blended the performance of the GTI with styling I preferred. The fact VW wouldn't just bring it to the U.S. always bugged me. Similarly, I'm irritated that Subaru killed the WRX wagon in the U.S. I know - the WRX wagon is SO similar to the GTI in so many ways - but, for me, I've never cared for Subaru's styling (except for my Toyobaru 2013 FR-S that I sold last year when used car prices skyrocketed) so I always looked at the WRX wagon as a multi-function utility vehicle: I'd have a great car for hauling people and stuff with AWD for the winter, but then it would be a blast to drive in the twisties. The big difference between the WRX and the GTI/Scirocco was that Subaru didn't have a nicer-looking model it was refusing to sell and VW did. I know, I know. I'm crazy. Thanks for asking, though - I appreciated the question! 😀👍

@@GetIrked Thanks for the comprehensive reply. As a former Ford Capri driver I know what you mean. With the Capri (look up Mercury Capri if you are in the USA) the designers were told to take the boring Cortina family saloon and make something that looked far better for slightly more money. I and the market think they succeeded. Many were what people joked were Sheep in Wolfs clothing. Mine was a 72HP 1.6L. It was actually the original Golf GTI which killed off cars like the Capri. The market preference switched to Wolf in Sheep's clothing. A former colleague told me how his Mother test drove a Golf VR6 not realising it was a performance car and gave herself a big scare 🙂
@GetIrked Жыл бұрын
I am an absolute sucker for the Capri. It’s like the American version of the ‘80s Scirocco or, better still, the Corrado. Hearing about your friend’s Mom test-driving a Golf VR6 made me laugh out loud - I have a theory that there are tens of thousands of WRX STIs never revved above 4K because they were owned by grannies convinced to buy the top-of-the-line model by the salesguy without ever asking what they were getting for the price. I can’t mock your 72HP engine at all. I owned a 108HP 1995 Miata and a 150HP Mustang from 1997 with a whopping 3.8L V6 (Ford had to TRY to only produce 150HP from an engine that large - my 2011 MX5 makes 167HP from a measly 4 cylinder). 😆

Sciroccos are fairly common where I live and its my friend's all-time favourite VW. They are getting quite expensive tho as VW stopped making them in 2017. Dayum, I had a used '76 Scirocco till I saw the brand new '78 in November '77 in the VW showroom floor It was a special model..some call it a Wolfsburg Edition or Champagne Edition. It was Alpine White, all trim was blacked out and there were black stripes along the side and surrounding the hatch glass. There was also a tape resembling a snake on the rear quarters panels that read 'Sidewinder'. The dealer had put 50 series tires on it which gave it this low to the ground stance and filled out the wheelwells. I fell in love right then and there and gave em a ck to hold it for me. I paid $7K and my buddies thought I was crazy to pay that. I kept my Scirocco till Summer of '85 and only paid $25 for a water pump. I did brakes, spark plugs and batteries myself.
