L322 Range Rover TDV8 long-term update. Is this peak Range Rover?

The L322 Range Rover first went on sale in 2002 but the updated version launched in 2006 has become peak Range Rover for me. I met up with a neighbouring farmer, who also owns a 2007 Range Rover, to what makes this model of Range Rover so special.

Don't get one if you aren't made of money. They are amazing driving and convenience cars, but the maintenance cost is absolutly insane. Most owners will tell you that, they love their cars but have thrown absurd amounts of money at them.

As an L322 driver, 2012 model, you must set aside £2k a year to cover maintenance, both scheduled and preventative. With that, it's been an incredibly reliable vehicle with unsurpassed levels of comfort and safety. To those driving the latest SUV and paying circa £1k a month, just who is the fool ;)

@@Tailhook69youre right. My father has been running a 2011 5.0 since it was new, today it has 140k miles on it, original engine, original transmission. He wont let it go, I think I am finally getting close to convincing him to get a last model year L405. Ill bet he will still keep his L322, he is legitimately attached to the car. This is just absolute gold. Two of the best motoring journos ever, waxing lyrical about why they think a car that we wouldn’t notice if it drove past us is the best car they own. Both own ‘dream cars’. But this green Rangie is their jewel. It’s poignant and a cause for deeper reflection than I can remember having after any recent car video. Well done Harry. Great to see you Jeremy. The simplicity and honesty are pleasures rarely seen nowadays. Love to see more!

I have enormous respect for Clarkson, Wilman, Hammond and May for what they achieved with Top Gear and I was devastated when the BBC canned it (although Clarkson’s behaviour was inexcusable). However, seeing him together with Harry, I had the impression that for Clarkson it is more about himself than about the cars. Mr. Metcalf, on the other hand, appears to have a much smaller ego and a more genuine interest in the car itself and the audience he’s doing it for.

Don’t get a turbo version and a lot of those expensive repairs go away. The parts for these cars have gone down a lot in the past 4 years alone and it’s actually pretty fast for any repair I’ve had done. Radiator, clutch fan, and alternator done for less than 1k with a mix of used and aftermarket. Just find a mechanic friend that needs some extra simple jobs. Even the air suspension can be changed to springs for fairly cheap

Feel similar about my 2007 Disco 3. Just gone over 150K miles and despite the odd issues as stuff wears out, every time I drive it I want to keep it (had it now 15 years). Goes anywhere and does anything - not as much power as the RR V8 but still nippy enough and has a lovely manual gearbox and cloth seats. So, perfectly understand why H&J love their Range Rovers. Good video.

These were my brother in laws dream car. He is a landy brand fan. He has series 1,2, 3 and a 110 and a disco 1, 2 then got one of the l322. Injectors packed in then while it was parked awaiting parts the battery died and the dead locks seized. He couldn't open the bonnet to jump it. Eventually he smashed a window then removed a seat and stripped down a door from the inside to unlock it. Before he repaired anything he got so fed up and sold it for spares or repair along with a set of injectors which cost more than he got for the car. He said he's bought his last landy as they are now to expensive to maintain.

This video was really enjoyable. Just two men having a good old farmyard chat. I just loved how Jeremy kept meandering the conversation to talk about fertiliser, tractors and who's who on the farm. Having grown up on a farm and driving a farm Defender (before they were called Defenders) and now owning a Discovery 5, this video was totally relatable. I'd prefer the new Defender too for exactly the reasons that Jeremy mentioned and whilst I feel that the Discovery should revert to a proper split tailgate, I am finding the fold down inner 'gate' very, very useful for the reasons that Harrry said. It surprised me how damned useful it is.

The equivalent to this dilemma in the United States is the Chevrolet Suburban. I use my 2006 for towing, work off road, hauling lumber and then take a trip with the family. If I bought a new one, it will be damaged too easily and I won't use it for chores anymore so why pay the huge price for one and not use it. The 2006 is not overly complicated, rides well, does what it needs to do. I think the designers have forgotten the U is for utility!

I'd say for many car brands, that was the peak in general. Some brands had the spill over into the early 2010s, but by 2015. Those cars are not things I see many people keeping for 16-20 years based on all the screens and electronics. The cars from the 2000s are the perfect mix of mechanical and tech wrapped up into a case of metal.
@rkan2
@rkan2 11 ай бұрын
@@joshuakhaos4451I always say 90s design, 2000s build. When you couldn't design every cost cutting measure perfectly but had to have some margin. And the 2000s production when everything was basically as sophisticated with robots as it is today. Also proper solvent based paints have gone to water based which don't last as well. Basically peak manufacturing just before the greatest environmental restrictions started. With Diesels I also think 2004/2005 was the best, since after 2006 DPFs became mandatory in EU/US.

What's most reliable; V6 or V8 diesel?
@Crunklefloop
@Crunklefloop 11 ай бұрын
@1MrErling in the L322 the 4.2 S/C Petrol is considered the most reliable. Mines on 237,000miles now and aside from the usual servicing parts it's needed nothing. There isn't a V6. The engine options were 3.0 in-line 6 diesel (BMW motor which is reliable but underpowered and had weak gearboxes), 4.4 BMW petrol V8 (good engine and reliable but I think they need timing chain tensioners fairly often) Later L322s had either a 3.6TDV8 diesel (what Harry and Jeremy have, good motors but the turbos are a weak point (possibly only caused by a failing EGR valve upstream taking out the turbos). Then there were the 4.2 Supercharged and 4.4 N/A Jaguar petrol engines (both very reliable). The last cars had 4.4TDV8 (loads of power and addressed a few issues with the 3.6 however there are some reports of issues arising now) or a 5.0 Supercharged petrol (Stupidly powerful but not as reliable as the earlier 4.2 version). In summary, if you want a diesel, go for the 3.6 or 4.4 but budget for getting the EGR replaced regularly. Or get a 4.2 Supercharged petrol and have the most reliable version, but bear in mine they are thirsty and average around 15mpg

I have the same L322 (57 plate) TDV8 and had exactly the same problems, alternator at around 100,000 miles and split turbo hose around the same time and now at 140,000 miles it's still going strong. Thinking I would go one better I purchased a 66 plate L405 SDV8 autobiography with 35,000 miles not so long ago and kept the L322 as a backup for lugging stuff around and not too bothered if it got scratched and abused. And to this day I fall in love again every time I get in it. I feel part of the car and in full control whereas the L405 just feels ... kind of unfriendly in comparison. Dont get me wrong, the L405 is a very nice car and I test drove many other cars before deciding to upgrade to the L405 but it's still not as good as the L322 and yes, it's got to be a strong contender for the best RR ever.
