The plain fact of the matter is that when it comes to heartfelt ballads, there is no way a 'Pop' singer, even one as great as Adele, can match the emotion laden penetration that a true 'Jazz' specialist like Angelina can provide. She has learned all the invented elements that her mentor Billie Holiday brought to musicality, which covers a huge range of musicality, and delivers them like no other singer I have ever experienced.

She's the best storyteller I ever heard. And you are right, this was spontaneous, Ivan her guitarist confirmed it in an interview. Angelina was 12 for this. It’s just a jam session, and you can see her reading the lyrics. It might be the first time she sang this. I do agree with you that this is not a perfect performance, but it’s one of my favorites from Angelina. What makes this so mesmerizing is her interpretation of these melancholy lyrics. I prefer this informal cover by Angelina to Adele’s. When Adele sings this, it’s about her pain. When Angelina sings, she has an immediate and personal connection with her listeners. We understand that the lyrics apply to the missed opportunities in our own lives. Although AJ at 12 doesn’t have the depth and strength of Adele for the low notes, her interpretation is stunning. She has not recorded this again, but please watch her cover a couple years ago of Adele’s Easy on Me-and listen to what 16 year old Angelina can do with Adele’s beautiful songwriting. Dounia, This was a one take video!!!! Her family invited the guitarist, señor Ivan Mendez (he told this in an interview). They eat together, talked and than Miss Angelina took him to her room and they looked through songs and decided which one the liked most. Usually he had around 30 min to get the notes straight, he could see them on her computer screen, to the left of her. She reads the lyrics while singing. Be safe and healthy. EfG

Ivan Mendez, the guitarist here, told the story of these little home studio recordings. They were mostly impromptu sessions. They would play around with a couple of songs, and then record one. Many times you can see that she's looking at the lyrics, and sometimes you can tell that English isn't her first language. But to note that she and Ivan may have only run through the song one time before the camera started is incredible. She used these sessions to play with tones, emotions, equipment (microphones and screens and reverb), learning her craft along the way. Later, she started transposing melodies to get them into a more comfortable range, but even here the richness of her voice is incredible. I'm with you. I'd love to hear her revisit this song today.

These are one take videos with no practice. She's not tired, she barely knows the song. You'll notice Angelina is looking off to the side to read the lyrics. She's heard it on KZbin and it's like "let's try this one next".... and go! What makes Angelina special is the emotion she conveys. Keep your reactions coming🍁.

What a down to earth yet professional reaction. I certainly appreciate your heartfelt comments. This is the performance that sold me on Angelina. It was 6 years ago when she was 12 and the very first time I saw her. Knowing the song by Adele and listening to Angelina's interpretation absolutely floored me. I have never heard a 12-year-old sing with the level of commitment and emotion that Angelina conveyed. I'm still a huge fan today! Note that many of the performances with Ivan were spontaneous. They may practice for an hour, the timing I don't really know, and then record together. You may notice that Angelina was reading the lyrics off to the side! You mentioned Angelina was born to sing. There is a wonderful mini documentary called Born to Sing the early years. It would make a wonderful reaction for you and the fans.

Thanks for the reaction to this song! Angelina was 12 or 13 and she is just learning the song, as you can tell by her look aways! I have seen her guitar player interviewed and he was always amazed how she could just pickup a song without really knowing it and sing it so brilliantly! If this were a performance she would have it locked down, this is just a run through that was filmed, part of her learning experience! Several of the songs on video during this time were spontaneous! When she recorded I'd Rather Be Blind, it was because she had just had delivered to her house a new microphone she was anxious to try, just sitting on a blue couch! Like you said she still was at a level most people can only dream of, the proof of how this training worked for her is her flawless performances on AGT Champions at 13 for the first one, she turned 14 at the end of that month! Notice too that she is just sitting down, not very conducive to breath control! Then again that is what is so great about these early videos, we get to hear her raw voice in what were practice sessions!

Most probably it was spontaneous. In an interview the guitarist Ivan Mendes said they just browsed thru KZbin, picked a song and it mostly took Angelina not more than one or two takes. You can also see her looking to the side to read the lyrics from the computer.

Great reaction. If you like to her Angelina’s low tones, please listen to her cover of “Great Thou Art” when she sings on Elvis low keys. Despite missing some low notes her, emotionally this song comes through. I wouldn’t like her to take down this song, as this show the raw format of Angelina’s exceptional development.

She was looking at the lyrics and whatever notes she wrote down/typed in on the computer/ipad/iphone towards the left of her; that's why you see her looking to her left, and yes, this was the first time, maybe the second, if Ivan Mendez messed up somewhere with his guitar. That’s why she’s known for her one-pass songs. She has something very close to pitch perfectness, so she knows how a song will sound even before she produces a first note. That's why you always have people/reactors who have their mouths open within the first few notes she sings. She also might be trying something different than Adele, which could very easily be the case, but you have to figure, 5 months is like 5 years for a prodigy like Angelina Jordan. ❤

Personally, I am *very* glad that Angelina has always cared more about getting the _feeling_ of a song right than hitting the notes "perfectly" (or, for that matter, getting all the words right). It has given us literally _hundreds_ of incredible performances over the last 10+ years. If you're impressed that she posted this slightly (but noticeably) imperfect performance, you won't _believe_ her cover of "Always on My Mind", also on her CoverChannel (like this one). She literally could not even finish singing the song (a tribute to her grandfather, who had died just days before), because she was overcome with emotion. (The final words are barely sung.) It is the most extreme example of the kind of imperfect, spontaneous performances that she regularly posted to her CoverChannel, from the age of 11 onwards. The fact that she would post such imperfect performances, when she had the ability to make them perfect (or at least much closer to that) if she wanted to, I think reveals something very important about her. (And now for the rant…) Pursuing perfection in singing is a fool's errand. It leads people to use autotune (in all of its forms), which is the death of vocal artistry. Unfortunately, Angelina has not been able to completely avoid that stupidity in her work with Republic Records (presumably because they have "final say" over the stuff that bears their copyright). Fortunately, the things she has recorded and released under her own copyright, and her live solo concerts that she has done (so far) completely indepndently of any record label, seem to be (almost completely?) free of that nonsense. Time will tell whether that will continue to be the case, or whether she will be seduced more by The Dark Side, as her career continues to inch towards the superstardom she has always dreamed of. Supposedly Adele became a superstar not using autotune (and its ilk). If she can do it, then I *know* Angelina can do it. I really hope Angelina knows that, too.

Every time, with her voice, Angelina leaves you with a wonderful feeling of satisfaction and tenderness that accompanies you too after listening to her. I infinitely adore her voice and her slow and emotional arrangements. Even in this case the deep emotion that it manages to convey is definitely stronger than that of Adele's version, even though she is a fantastic singer-songwriter. She was 12 here and this was most likely spontaneous, like the rest of her performances with Ivan Mendez (in this one) and Egil Clausen (from age 7 - 11) In respective interviews they have both said that these recordings were never planned ahead. Also, as a rule of thumb, whenever you see Ivan and Angelina perform together, she was ALWAYS 12. Never 11, never 13 🙂 Much love from Norway ♥♥♥♥♥

🎶👣💫😍 Nice reaction… Angelina would commonly record with this guitarist or before that back in Norway, these " practice sessions". They were always recorded on the first or second take and then published. The jazzy side of Angelina likes to play ahead or behind the pocket so some of the timing you speak of may be that. She has a keen sense of timing. I love the way Angelina let us into her world and shows us everything as you say, even though it wasn't perfect. She has always from the beginning, been very confident.

Thank you for your reaction and analysis. Anytime we see this guitarist, Ivan Mendez, we know Angelina was 12 years old. We learned in a interview Alan Papier did for his channel, Ivan said he would be invited to Angelina's home and expected to spend most of the day with her family. Late in the night, Angelina would ask Ivan if he knew a song. If he did, then they set up the video camera and recorded the song. Ivan said, most videos are the first take. Angelina as a natural jazz singer, performs a given song different each time she sings it. I like to believe that the notes you felt Angelina didn't reach properly, were sung purposely, to give more effect and emotion.

All of the performances with guitarist, Ivan Mendez, Angelina was 12 yo & all of them were unrehearsed doing it for the 1st & usually only time. She is reading the lyrics & Ivan just learned the song 15 minutes earlier. They are totally "raw" recordings arranged "on the fly" with perfect imperfections. No other artist does this kind of thing, posting it on the internet, warts & all. It shows how confident she is to share these home videos filmed by Grandma Mery.

I suggest that you now listen to Angelina and Ivan singing "Stay". A stunningly beautiful song, maybe her best. She is 12 here, the microphone is a clue. It was a gift to her for her 12th birthday. This session is just a jam, based on the songs they both knew. This could be the first time she sang this song. Note that she is reading the lyrics on her phone while she sang! Her grandmother is Iranian, here AJ is 12yrs old'ish, and the rabbit hole is deep if you're going to do more reactions to AJ. She has been improving gradually as a singer each and every year since she was very young. She speaks a few languages: Mainly Norwegian and English, but has sung in Japanese (grandfather was Japanese), and knows some farsi from her grandmother Meri zamani. Her repertoire is huge and can sing in many different genre of music. She is an exceptional young woman and a gift to the world. She has an amazing body of videos from age six (first time in a studio) up until the present day as an 18 year old. She has an amazing range from very low to very high and she has yet to reach her full potential. She has used one of the Whitney Houston's songs, 'I Have Nothing' as a yardstick to check her vocal growth. Her jazz influence is in most all of her work which she helps rewrite or rearrange to fit how she wishes to sing the song(s). I have only scraped the surface and many more knowledgeable AJ followers will no doubt enlighten you even more. Great reaction!

Great reaction. Angelina doesnt upload videos for it to be perfect. She makes them cause she loves to sing and these uploads are made in her bedroom and she usually only record it in one take, not like most others who cut and paste for it to be flawless. She is doing it all organically, just her natural voice… She just sings without thinking about the original or getting each word or note «correct». Not many other singers or artists would dare to do that. Dont think its neccesary to analyze each second of her singing in this environment, cause remember they are just «jamming» and singing in her room.

Every time you see here singing with Ivan as guitarist she is 12. She moved to LA sometime in the spring of when she was 12. When singing with Ivan she usually does not even memorise the lyrics but reads them on her Ipad that keeps on her left side.

This was not rehearsed, it was spontaneous, she was reading the lyrics. There is a video where Ivan the guitarist was interviewed and stated they decided on a song and took a few minutes to learn the chords and this is what happened. Angelina was 12 here.

Wonderful reaction. Ivan’s interview with Alan Papier he mentions he would come over after work to see Angelina and they would have a meal and then AJ would get down to asking him if he knows certain songs and then they did several songs in one session and often in one take. That being said I really learned from your different points as she works on her breath control and also she uses her iPhone for the lyrics. Maybe tired after late and long day. But Angelina’s tone, personality and emotion are beautiful ❤😢

Hi Dounia so nice to see you come back - Angelina you do know now and she is my prime musical love but nearly the same is with Putri Ariani from Indonesia - she is a blind Autodidaktic singer and musician with eidetic memory a very sensible and power full voice and she sings in 7 or 6 languages even arabic - i woul really like to see you reacting to her (maybe Atouna Toufale because it is about children in Palestine) - but it would be good to start by her Audition on Amercan got Talent last year - after that you can go over her channel with about 450 cover and original Songs - she is just one week older than Angelina but was born after 6 months pregnancy so in fact younger than Angelina.... i will subscribe too see you there - cheers from Germany

Angelina did not have a cold. She wasn’t sick. She applied the voice as she wanted it to be for this performance. There is no specific voice when it comes to Angelina. There is one video that she made when she had a bad cold. She sang for a charity event. The song was I’ll be there, by Michael Jackson. Even sick, she was amazing.

Great reaction One of my favorite Angelina performances. I actually prefer this over Adele’s original. As other’s have said, Ivan Mendez was her guitarist when she moved to LA when she was 12. So if you see a video with him you know that Angelina was 12. Ivan said that Angelina would call him up when she wanted to record. He would spend time with the family, they would have a meal, then go to Angelina’s “music corner”. She would look for songs online. When she found one she wanted to do she would ask him if he knew it. If he didn’t he would take a few minutes to learn it. She would download the lyrics, discuss with him how she wanted to do the song and then say “follow me” and they would record. No rehearsal, usually one take. Ivan said that if they needed more than one take it was usually because he messed up. Her guitarist in Norway, Egil Olsen basically has the same story.

Her version of a new unreleased song, I Keep Holding Out For You, at 10 was part of a maturation where she found her voice and less of a Billy Holiday sound. This is an excellent studio work and shows her range of interpretation at a very young age. Having no one else to mimic she really conected to the context. Its in my top 3 AJ songs and one i will revisit my entire life. It really hits home

She's also looking off to her left at her computer screen that contains the lyrics. She and Ivan do most of their covers together after both of them learn the tune and then record. Most of these are the original take, no do-overs. She is known to complete most of her songs with one take. You will find that not all of her covers follow the original, she always gives her own feelings to whatever she does.

Thank you for your reaction. I am an Adele fan for many many years but Adele's voice is more shrill/ tinny where Angelina's voice is much more rich and soulful. You must also realize that this covers she did it mostly one take or two and she is reading the lyrics. Lastly, to understand Angelina's sinning, you must take into account her jazz influence because people often think she sings off rhythm. They call it "Back phrasing or off beat". That is what jazz singers do.

Your correct she often liked live no practice performances in one take. She and both Mendez guitarist (US) and Egil guitarist (Norway) would get together choose some songs at random and have at it. She if I understand correctly loved the jazz method of improvisation. Not infrequently here too you can see her looking off camera at a computer screen, phone or iPad to reference lyrics.

❤ Your honest opinion. Sooner or later you will react to “How great Thou art”, also at 12 years old. She reached the low notes easier. She did a series of covers with Ivan Mendez, the guitarist. You find an interview with him at Papier’s site. He explains how they got together and made these videos on the fly with little or no practice. Note that she reads the text from her phone over to the right in the picture. Note also that she’s using her new microphone, a Neuman TLM 103 that picks up every little nuance. (Not very forgiving!) (In the “Spell video she was using a Shure SM7B broadcasting microphone.) Recognition to Ivan Mendez too. He does a great job with all these recordings. 🤗 I look forward to your next. Ivan would come for dinner and then they would choose a song...some she knew better than others, some she had to read the lyrics on the fly. Ivan often wasn't familiar with some either. He said he never knew before dinner what they would record after.

Two things that may not be apparent on first time watching and hearing this performance. If you watch the Alan Papier interview with Ivan Mendez (the guitarist) that @ericdavison 5434 mention and left the access to, it will give you more understanding of the performance. She is reading the words as she sings. This is the first or maybe the second take! She was 12 and this was during the first few months after the family moved to Las Angeles!

Great reactions, thank you. A song by Angelina that you can watch in advance is "I still holding out for you". Please don't make a reaction video of it because I read that Angelina promised, never to sing this song again. When a 10-year-old girl sings about suicide along with other difficult songs and musically drowns herself in the river, then crosses the river Jordan and ascends to heaven, you have to think about it. The original is by Baby Fuzz and Angelina changed a few small details. On the surface, the song is about unrequited love that you can't give up and that's why you take your own life. The song only becomes really difficult and meaningful, when you realize, that she is secretly singing about herself and that the reason for the suicide is a split personality, an outward-facing "you", a superficial false personality, a lie, and an inward-facing "I", the hidden, true, profound one that no one knows about. "... couldn't even face me ... even if I tried...". the only way to put an end to the lies is to separate yourself from the other self through suicide. I'm glad Angelina didn't write this song herself and I can't say that she changed the Baby Fuss version in any way. Angelina is also 8 years older now and I hope there isn't a bomb slumbering inside her. I prefer to think of Joan Baez, sing a lot of years...
