One thing I haven’t seen mentioned is clean up after sanding. I’m through the process of repair and sanding I’ve used a vacuum and tack cloth to get as much dust and particles as I can and it’s time to spray but I’m wondering if I should be going over the surface with something like TSP before painting. Since I don’t expect a response in time for my project maybe for other people watching. Im going to just go ahead and spray it and hope the paint adheres. Great videos and helpful cost savings
@chadsimmons6347 Жыл бұрын
use a teeshirt cloth soaked in acetone or medical alcohol for plastic or fiberglass prep work, before the fix, then before the primer and paint, dont paint like the video demonstration, go from side to side barely pressing paint sprayer as many times as it takes, or the primer & paint will run like water, after painting use heat gun on low to bake the finish
@melissamcgee5572 Жыл бұрын
I assumed i would need special paint. Will just the primer work?

I did this once with great success in a bottom color that was different from the original. The only thing I did different was at the wall tape off line I added different width striping. 3/4" to 1/2" to 1/4"" and finished with 1/8". It ended up looking great. This was back long ago before current two stage paint systems! Using 2 stage systems will be so much easier since cure time and clear over time is so much faster. Also if there is any mistakes it can be sanded / corrected very easily and quickly. The final clear over will greatly reduce the masked off paint transition line or lines if ya stripe. Buffing and polishing can and is very simple from the new into the original . I have wondered how the floor would turn out if bedliner paint was used as It comes in many colors.

Of course, when they see I am an old widow living alone, they think my back is against is against the wall and charge MORE. I was charged $250 to put ONE shingle (that I supplied) on my roof. Or with shower pans the styrofoam gives way and prone to cracking the fiberglass so this method of repair I have used for my shower. The quote from three different places was $12k up to $18k. No thanks. I will use the repair method exactly as pictured here. If fiberglass repair is good enough for a boat it’s good enough for a shower pan.

Thank you for your video. How do you keep the resin from running down from a vertical wall surface. I have a Cracked area on a section of the tub where the wall meets the floor and the crack has moved up the wall of the tub - so I need to keep the long hair glass and resin on it without too much running below - Do you tape off the areas below or let it run and sand/feather it out? The only problem I had was that when I was spraying the top coat on l couldn’t tell if I actually covered the entire surface because it blended with the white primer coat. Walmart is the least expensive for the same brands. Foam can and will keep expanding for several hours. A wooden roller is available for rolling the mesh into the resin. Using a brush tends to pull at the mesh and pulling it out of its matrix. A trick for getting the resin to not be tacky when cured is to cover it with wax paper or non stick aluminum foil. Non stick side into resin. Let cure for at least 2 hrs. After removing the covering then wipe down the resin repair area with acetone and that will make the resin bone dry, no gumming up your paper. As to top coating you can get the product called GELCOAT. It can be purchased pre colored at Home Depot, lowes or you can get it at automotive paint supply store and have it colored to match. You can spray it or just pour it on and roll/ brush it on. Then after curing/drying you can wet sand with steps of 120/180/220/400 then polish it all with rubbing compound. Now if you are in textured area polishing is not done. Getting the repair to match perfectly would require a lot of experience that most DYI's simply don't have. Any and all sanding can be done with wet sand paper if you don't like all the dust. Just be sure to use a blow dryer to insure its is dry before applying any additional materials. You can also use the heat from blow dryer to warm the resin to cure much faster. Each 10 degrees of temp increase doubles the reaction rate and the opposite is true if it's cold. So get it warm! If the damage is on a vertical surface where the resin run down like water then use a product of gelled resin with chopped glass in a can. It is called long and strong! Funny huh? Use it like applying any brand of bondo ( polyester autobody filler )

I got everything at Lowes, but everything was kind of scattered around the store. They didn't have the locktite foam, but they said any construction grade foam would suffice. I have about $120 dollars invested for materials so far. If I had a contractor do this, the repair would be at least 4 times that. A complete replacement of my shower stall was $1200 and a ten week wait for the order.
