Hmm, got a few books from my place of work, one of which was Violence: Our Deadly Epidemic and It's Causes, by James Gilligan, MD. Finally got around to reading it on a trip about a month back and found it moving enough to actually look at the author info. And now here I am. Got to see if I can procure the rest of his books.

James Gilligan is a psychiatrist that has researched behavior of criminals for more than 20 years. He's only trying to spread information. If you doubt the facts, then why don't you look into his research and judge on that, instead of diminishing it, based on a vague notion that his opinions on things are different than yours. I also think it's weird why so many people I meet assume equality equals communism or dictatorship. Sometimes I've even heard claims that equality is an enemy of freedom.

Violence is one of many possible reactions to inequality and/or scarcity. You're right that using violence is often something you learn from the environment you live in, and usually, most importantly, the world you grow up in. However, someone who's been peaceful most of their life can easily become violent if they become scarce enough. I mean, what else is there to do? If you become so desperate to survive (physically and/or mentally) then violence becomes an increasingly viable approach.

00:30 “The more highly unequal a society is the higher its rates of violence. For example, the most powerful predictor of homicide rates throughout the world, and this has been repeated in dozens of studies, is the size of the gap between the rich and the poor. The greater the degree of economic inequality in a society the higher the murder rate, the lower the inequality the lower the murder rate. For example, in the world today the countries with the lowest rates of economic inequality, the highest rates of equality, are the countries of Western Europe, Japan, and the other English speaking democracies, Canada, Australia, New Zealand. They have the lowest rates of inequality and they have murder rates that are in most years are roughly a tenth of ours (the United States) and in the other English speaking democracies about a fifth of ours. The U.S. murder rates are 5 to 10 times higher than that of any other economically developed country on Earth. Now, one reason for that, the United States also has by far the highest degree of economic inequality of any developed economy in the world. The two go together. The Dr made some very good points. The cause and effect was really explored. Lets just say the social make up; TV, MUSIC and MEDIA are motivating factors. Weapons are accidental, because I have a weapon - because I have one, does not make me want to harm someone. The constant propagandize is the driving force to encourage violence - the Constance labeling to convince people they are suppose to be violent. There is no solution to prevent our current crime and violence, because poverty is necessary and media, tv and music are generating an enormous amount of revenue. The oligarch have created a system to maintain poverty and racial divide; which are the driving force of violence. We The People are extremely ignorant, so we will never think for ourselves.

He says violence is rises in proportion to the amount of inequality in a country. The USA has the highest rate if inequality between the rich and the poor in the developed world and in conjunction with that a violent crime rate five to ten times higher that western Europe and japan. In a way this us boy surprising, in a country where a gun is considered a "great equalizer."

This is brilliant doctor and such a confirmation of my philosophy in respect of Critical Race Theory and the deleterious effects of white supremacy which in my view is the main predicator of systemic wealth inequality

In 20 Years of my little Research, I had found that Guns also kill snakes or similar reptiles. I agree with you with the notion of inequality (or an apartheid system) as the main root cause of violence; spouse and children too are killed in Lover Triangles. Hey Gentlemen, the poor gypsy women (or wanderer) without parents is coming back! This is South Africa; It is dominated by vicious cycle!

Norquist recently said, "The peasants are paying their taxes." So why should the brunt of the tax burden be placed on the rich? | Well, obviously if the tax burden were distributed according to wealth, the "peasants" would be paying almost nothing! This answer is so obvious, and so completely escapes the elitists, that it baffles and infuriates the logical mind of the common man to the extent they are driven to commit violence. Sadly, they commit it against each other instead of the culprits.

SSRI is an antidepressant that enhances serotonin between neurons. "Mens rea" is a philosophy of "guilty minds" used in common criminal law. It's not science. I don't understand what point you're making in mentioning these things though, and what you mean by an invisible clue. The topic here is about the core scientific issues of violence - not medical treatments or philosophic moral views on it. If I misunderstood, then please elaborate what you mean.

Seems like only one aspect, kind of blown up. Has he not seen how politicians generate fear as a very concrete tool of manipulation? The whole structure called 'law and order' is manipulated and creates, practically, disorder and violence. And the overall incredible ignorance in USA, and the correlation of fundamental religion and violence. (religion being of course also a tool for politicians to manipulate.)

I see a correlation with the U.S. using unilateral military aggression or sanctions against populations of sovereign nations and our mass shootings. It's not video games. It's a disease of the Public Mind.

Are any of the naysayers psychiatrists themselves or has spend over 20 years of their life studying violence? If you all doubt James's facts and all of the colleagues and other agencies involved...then why not conduct your own studies and come up with other answers instead of shooting down facts that make you uncomfortable.

Why do I feel he's just pulling these numbers out of his ass? What's the underlying message here, that if we were Commies, violence would just dissapear? Also, citing Japan as an example of a non-violent society... not good for credibility man, just saying.

The statement "... you cannot stop this violence." is probably one of the best defences for not doing anything to prevent harm, but as it stands on nothing, it is valid only as much as it's repeated. If no one uttered such falsehoods, would anyone believe them?

DISPARITY OF WEALTH IN MISSOURI (KANSAS CITY): The richest 5 percent of households have average incomes 11.7 times as large as the bottom 20 percent of households and 4.1 times as large as the middle 20 percent of households. After decades of widening inequality, Missouri's richest households have dramatically bigger incomes than its poorest households.
