This assumes a certain amount of one-on-one time parent-to-child. What about the difference between first children and the others? We have three kids; the first one was FAR more verbal than the other two, both as a toddler and even now, when she's a novelist. In other words, is this effect modulated depending on how many children there are, to vie for mom & dad's attention?

Correct. Studies were conducted which showed that while 2nd and 3rd born children were held for an equal amount of time when compared to first born children, they were looked at less and were exposed to less child-directed speech.
