My guest this episode is Dr. Peter Attia, M.D., who trained at Stanford University School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins Hospital and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Attia is host of The Drive podcast and is a world expert on behavioral approaches, nutritional interventions, supplementation and pharmacological techniques to improve lifespan, healthspan and athletic performance. We discuss how best to evaluate your health status using routine blood work, body scans and regular tests of physical strength and endurance. Dr. Attia explains what he uses with his patients to “back-cast” their health goals as a way to design their exercise and nutritional programs. We also discuss hormone modulation and replacement therapy for both men and women. We explain how cholesterol and related factors contribute to cardiovascular disease risk and how to monitor and mitigate that risk. Dr. Attia details various supplementation, nutrition, exercise and prescription approaches useful to people in every decade of life to improve vitality, reduce their risk of disease and increase the number of years sustaining peak cognitive and physical health.

What about sleep? My experience with exercise, nutrition and sleep is that exercise is important but not to be dwelled upon(just do something, run lift swim bike whatever) but very important is sleep and rest after and consistently and a close second is nutrition ( only to stress about it if you are going for low fat procentage, you are trying to loose weight fast or gain muscle fast).

Why can't we find Doctors like this in the real world? In my experience, as soon as you bring information like this to most primary care doctors, it's like you are speaking a completely different language. Thankful for these two, I have learned so much from both of them ever since they went on JRE.

Peter Attia talks to million of viewers about the thoughtful ways he manages testosterone levels, why it is good, why it is safe the way he does it, and so on, but then Peter doesn't seem to see the connection to why TRT clinics are so popular. It'd be nice if all these podcasters with large audiences would acknowledge how they are driving the modern interest in TRT, especially since they also think those TRT clinics are terrible!

My mother was a nurse and later, a course coordinator at a top University for the nursing. She explained to me during my depression, that GPs are essentially trained to aim at medication solutions for your health problems. They are not so much general health professionals as assessors and highly educated medication prescribers. That and general restrictions to obvious things like bad food, alcohol and smoking. My GP is great, but he thinks being over 170lbs at 6ft for a guy of 30 isn't good, and when I said what about putting on muscle, aiming for 190 lean, he said that was unnecessary and not healthy. He is also in his late 60s, so.

@@aninterestingconversation thanks...something to think about. 🤔 I try to counteract it by spending 20min - head down, feet up on my slanted weight bench...cooling off after my run. As far as posture, do you think bent over laterals to strengthen the rhomboids are enough? (I do those too)...or is something more needed for posture? About 'gravity'...yah I was making that distinction, initially... gravity as a force (which he could have meant) vs. gravity, as in a grave situation. I do think he meant the latter. What do you think? Either way, it was probably one of the most profound phrases about our mortality I've come across. Only topper, for me, would be 'memento mori'😳

PLEASE make a clip of the piece on women’s hormones for your KZbin clips page. I need to share that portion with every woman and doctor I know. The part about progesterone could literally save women’s relationships, careers and even their lives. I did my own research recently at 42 because my endocrinologist, OBGYN and primary pretty much said my symptoms are normal hormonal age related stuff. Just last week I got my own lab work done on day 20 of cycle and found that my progesterone was at absolute post menopausal levels and I haven’t had menopause yet. They immediately put me on progesterone RX and apologized for not listening. I know other women my age suffering and possibly unnecessarily because doctors and society have taught us that feeling crazy anxiety at times of the month are normal.

I can’t agree more. I started peri symptoms around 37. Had blood work done. And because I was within “normal” range, no one wanted to do anything about it. I got to the point where I was experiencing hot flashes and missed periods and absolutely no hormone levels worth speaking about, before a Dr would do anything. I’ve been doing the bio-T pellets for 17 mths, and I’m still trying to get my Dr to find my correct dose. She did a blood panel before we started, and one about 6 wks after my first insertion. My testosterone was in the triple digits. She had 0 problem with letting me continue with that. I was trusting her to do another panel somewhere down the rd to see if I was leveling out. But, she didn’t. I started hair growth in places that I’ve never had before, and my libido was crazy. At the one yr mark from first insertion, I asked her if we should come down and she just wasn’t sure. I asked her to take it down. Then I had some break through bleeding. So we took estrogen down. Bleeding stopped. But had I not asked her, I’m certain I’d still be on that higher dose. It’s just not that important of an issue to most Drs. And that drives me crazy.

Whoops, I had planned to haul a couple wheelbarrows of firewood to the house, bring a bag of grain to the barn and ride my horse for an hour. But instead I got hooked on watching these guys talking about exercise and have been sitting in a nice cozy chair by the fire. Tomorrow is my 85th birthday, so I’ll do my annual birthday hike and make some plans for my final decade.

This was awesome! So I am 56 and on bioidentical estrogen, progesterone, testosterone and dhea. The estrogen is in a patch the rest are oral (troche). This therapy has changed my life. I had horrible brain fog, hot flashes, etc. when I did research on what happens to women going through menopause, I was horrified. Everything from cardiovascular to brain problems (which hot flashes are a symptom of. My general doctor told me that getting older sucks and there was nothing that could be done. I found a functional doctor who works with hormone replacement and life got better. This information needs to be discussed. Women need to know what treatments are out there. As it is, I’m looking at a future where I can stay viable in my career for longer.

Did you get tested by your primary care doctor or did you have to outsource and pay out of pocket? I've brought up these concerns to my doctor also with zero effort to address it. How do you get started on this path?

@@karlacarbajal6383 I started with a good functional doctor who works with me rather than against me. We work together on my health so it’s a partnership. The functional doctor (should have experience with hormones esp bio identical ones) will test your hormone levels and then compound everything but the estrogen. The estrogen will come in a transdermal patch. It’s important to take a cocktail of hormones. I’m on testosterone progesterone and dhea with the estrogen patch. My insurance covers the patch but not the compounded hormones. Unfortunately, you’ll pay out of pocket for the doctors visits but I feel it’s well worth it. Honestly, I hate my primary care doctor. She’s useless. My primary care doctor did the same thing about not addressing it. So I just took her out of the equation. I hope this makes sense.

Dr. Attia said he would bring it to a close but he could speak for an hour on the problems with this study - I’d love to hear the hour, honestly. I’m 29 and coming on 30 is making me dig into the things I’ll need to know to advocate for my own health when that time comes. There’s a lot of very predatory, legal-grey-area outfits operating in the women’s health space that latch onto women not knowing. I saw a clip on tiktok that pushed me to find this podcast - had never watched before but this is all so important. Thanks for this.

Dr. Attia, I don't know what is the most valuable part of this conversation. I very much appreciate the wealth of information about physical health, but your openness about your struggle with emotional health... I don't have the right words to express how deeply I felt that. I'm going through a difficult time in life on a few levels right now (physical and emotional), which is how I found this specific episode. Thank you for sharing so much and for providing some signposts I can consider as I navigate my situation. Hoping to buy and read your book soon, but I'm going to knock out one of the books I'm reading right now first... Thanks again. Profoundly.

Awesome topic. My father in law whom passed away two years ago at age of 96 was active in whole life doing simple stretch exercise every day. His passing was even more interesting than his living. It only took one week in hospital and his long gave up. He went in total peace. I learned a lot from him. as 57 years old man with diabetes type 2 I keep myself active with walking, biking and after listening to you and Dr Attia add Bowflex to my arsenal. It’s amazing how strength training effects my blood sugar. It shows immediately on my CGM. Thanks all of you for bringing this valuable knowledge at zero cost to us. I personally appreciate it a lot.

Hi and thank you for this episode! As a 39 year old woman turning 40 this year and the info on hormones and changing hormones is super useful. I have always been active and want to continue being active for the rest of my life. I would love to see another episode specifically on women's hormones and neurology and activity. I want to hear more on the topic brought up briefly about dropping progesterone and emotions and what exactly is going on in the brain with that. And also what does it mean for exercise with the changes in hormones we experience every month. And finally, with menopause what do we need to do to stay active and healthy.

Another great episode! Loved the time spent discussing women’s health. Looking forward to a future episode that dives deeper into where progesterone scepters are located in the brain. Just overall understanding the impact of the rise and decline of hormones throughout the follicular, luteal, ovulatory and menstrual phases. Along with protocols to balance those.

I would love an episode or part of an episode on women’s health issues such as polycystic ovarian syndrome, endometriosis, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder which are really hard to get good information on - physicians often don’t know what to do with them or have good solutions and a significant percentage of the population have them! The message is often that we just have to live with the pain/dysfunction and to suck it up.

I really liked this episode especially the part about women and hormones. I hadn’t slept well for 13 years until last October when I finally found someone to help me with bioidenticals. Fortunately they are covered under insurance, but often they aren’t. I know so many women who have suffered from that flawed Women’s Health Initiative back in the late 90’s. Thank you for helping us women. As we age, we tend to be forgotten.

LOVE this one and for me exercise is the most important part of my day. Begin with the end in mind. Aged 16 I was determined not to repeat my family history (type 1 and 2 diabetics, heart disease to name few.) Exercise has been my saviour, no supplements and no meds. Dance was my first love and then thirty two years of strength training, body weight exercises, (calisthenics after age 54) and now it's POLE dancing.

Vibration plates? Just lift heavy, as long as you keep progressing the weight in some full body exercises and your bone density will go up.

I love that you asked a question about young women on contraception, I am yet to find a podcast of this kind about womens contraception and the effect this has on the body, if you could cover this subject that would be amazing! I would love to know which is the safest option, supplements that would be useful to take while on birth control and if using an app to track your cycle is a viable contraceptive option. Also I have seen some recent papers suggesting being on birth control hinders muscle growth in females! I know this is a big subject not often talked about I would love to have your views on this as such a huge part of the population are on birth control for 5+ years of their life! Thankyou for your content it has helped me immensely!

It’s a tricky thing to talk about birth control’s negative side effects, but I’m sure the Hubs would do it right. That said, a book that has helped me navigate it all is Beyond the Pill. It at the very least pinpointed the hormonal imbalances I needed to work out. I can’t vouch for the entire book as I’ve kind of used it as a “choose your own adventure” book so far, but still. It is such a difficult thing to figure out and I’ve gone from feeling broken to having hope in figuring it out. Oh, and finding an ob gyn that listens to me has also helped tremendously.

This subject seems so important. There are so many concerns about the reactions some women have with BC. I’ve read the Fifth Vital sign, listened to a few different podcasts and have Taking Charge of Your Fertility on my shelf. It’s wonderful to go to for concerns and data. Thanks for bringing this up!!

@@LPurje I’ll have a look at getting that book Thankyou! As a 25 year old I’ve been on it since 18, prescribed my my doctor to help my skin as is the case for so many, for them to them come off after many years and get horrible side effects afterwards, adult acne being one of them!

Love this conversation! I am a male in my 40s and have a body of a 25year old. Been training TaekwonDo and progressed into other martial arts along with strength/prowerlifting, yoga, Isometrics plyometrics, calisthenics, while focusing heavily on perfection of nutrition and techniques. Full body from head to toe. Long term goal is to be the first 200year old male in modern times!

The part about statins and cholesterol is really not great. Minimizing side effects of statins and zeroing their cognitive side effects is unethical. Proposing to use them to increase longevity is a total nonsense.

Shoutout to Huberman for always having his finger on the pulse in relevant health topics and acknowledging them. Genital sunning, sunscreen dangers, female birth control, etc. are all topics discussed on social media heavily but rarely acknowledged by health professionals/ scientists

They made this episode digestible even for those new to the subject which I really appreciate since by watching a lot of Peter Attia's work I often find it very difficult to digest his deep knowledge. Hi Dr. Huberman! I noticed that many of the episodes you have focusing on health, wellness, diet/nutrition, exercise, and specifically hormones had men as the guests. As a woman who loves science and really enjoys your podcast, I would love to see an episode with a woman in STEM describing some of these insights from the female perspective (specifically relating to exercise/nutrition and most importantly hormones). I know you’ve done recent episodes on this already, but I’m hoping this is something you can consider in the future. I’m sure the men speaking to these topics aren’t biased and are distinguished in their fields, but its hard to be sure that their research/experience gives women an equal focus. Keep up the great work :)

Cannot express how much I am loving this episode, all of this information Dr Attia is sharing is so interesting and so helpful. I am a 45 year old woman and I started strength training (and HRT) a few years ago and I absolutely love it, I push myself at every session and my goal is to stay as fit and healthy as I possibly can until the day I die. I work out with a great group of women and I try to encourage all the women I know to do strength training, I also take brisk walks everyday with my dog, and go on hiking trips a few times a year. I wish I’d started strength training years ago but I was always scared of getting bulky and of course that hasn’t happened. Thank you for your interesting podcasts Andrew 🫶🏻🏋🏼‍♀️

Are you going through Dr. Attia? Whats his clinic called. I am starting HRT and I am going through core medical group. Its not full on TRT, but low HRT to try and kick start my T production. My T levels are low. 261. I would like to look around a little bit before I decide to use CMG for along time. It seems LIke Dr. Attia has a better understanding about it. Thank you

I’ve been a fan of Peter’s for almost a decade. Just like you, I heard of him through Tim Ferriss. I’m a subscriber to his Private Feed podcast. I love that he gets into the weeds since I am truly an information junky! But this… this is actionable and functional info. I could no sooner have started exercising than flown to the moon until I changed my diet and started taking lots of supplements, only then did I have the energy to even try. And yes, I'm listening to this while doing my 200+ minutes of exercise every week because of the changes I've made since starting your podcast. Don't discourage people from starting with whatever aspect of your advice that will get them on the path to health ❣️
