Appreciated a different perspective that what I've been clicking on lately, thanks. I am seeing a consistent criticism of the dialog and choices across most of what I've seen so far. Also good that you point out a flaw that I didn't hear in more critical reviews (specifically how companions don't differentiate in combat very well). Will be interested in seeing what your final thoughts are, thanks.
@RedbeardflynnRollsAOneАй бұрын
I think there might be a bit more differentiation between the subclasses but there is a whole lot of similarities. Especially the heals. I get why, bioware wanted you to have more freedom in picking who you wanted to take wirh you but I liked them having a bit more defined roles, like in a tabletop or an mmo personally.
@nutherefurlongАй бұрын
@@RedbeardflynnRollsAOne There are different ways to deal with that, yeah. I've seen that in pen and paper games sometimes, but those are more flexible just be their nature. I played SWTOR for a long time and they started making it less about different classes working together than seeing how each one could solo heal, but that was arguably to its detriment... I'm also thinking of how Origins made classes very rigid, either you were a caster or you weren't sort of thing. There's no one right way, of course, bottom line is how it works and how it feels

the new combat has given me a lot to think about as someone who only ever plays as a dual daggers rogue. It seems to me at least that I'm meant to play this game at ranged for the most part, as I'm given both daggers and a bow, and a lot of the abilities involve ranged, even if they're dagger related, or there's the grenade-type abilities, like the one's you could spec into in DAI. Without a warrior in the party for a good chunk of the beginning, I felt like I was just stuck with all the aggro and no abilities to help offset that, other than the pilfer ability that I've been clinging to for dear life lol. Now that I have Davrin and Taash with abilities to offset some of the pressure it's not as bad, but I do wish one of them could have joined sooner. I do think it's some very solid combat, but my favourite role does feel a bit underserved. Storywise, I have also had some moments of noticing the "tell instead of show", but it's still very compelling. I don't want to get into specifics, but there are some quests and conversations that feel really fleshed out and satisfying, and then there's others where I kind of thought there'd be a bit more to it. Regardless, it's as you say, a total page turner. I'm also fully in love with the environments / areas. I really feel like they delivered on everything I'd hope to see of northern Thedas, but I also would fully support more contained entries in the series where we get to see even more of each region. Anyway, I'm having a blast and glad to see you are too. Thanks for the video, hope you enjoy the rest!

@@RedbeardflynnRollsAOne yeah, and I even thought the warrior looked really good in the high level gameplay trailer they had. I wonder if things were designed more with a warrior in mind, though I think there things you could do for rogues as well. for example, a playstyle built around dodging vs blocking was something i was hoping to find in the skill tree but didn't really see anything that stood out. I also didn't really notice anything to do with stealth which has been a staple in previous games. I'm giving it it's fair shake though and I'm still having fun with it for what it is. I get that people want their choices to matter. But also at the same time, the last 3 games (even Dragon Age 2) happened in Southern Thedas, where the history, religion, & politics are all a lot more tied together. The North, especially Tevinter & Rivain operate completely differently. Yeah, we're gonna most likely get a lot of cameos, but other than that... who we choose to rule in Ferelden or even in Orlais, whether we recruited Mages or Templars in Origins or Inquisition, there's no possible way for that to impact another separate hemisphere, outside of background banter.

@brianmurphy6480Ай бұрын
The dialogue was at the level of an elementary school's morality play, the choices were too limited (I never take the evil route, but dang it, sometimes I like to *pretend* I will, and I like having the option), and the characters were very surface-level; some vanity projects (world is supposed to be ending, but we can't die without my proper pronouns being addressed!) and the obvious insertion of utterly irrelevant themes into a world where they wouldn't even be brought up, let alone taken seriously, just made it impossible to invest any emotional weight into the game. Plus, companions that can't die?! Jeez, I know I save/load as much as I'm allowed to cheat death as often as I can, but that's more than enough. Immortal wisecracking diversity cutouts just aren't...real. Especially for a fantasy world that involves blood magic, genocidal gods, and more ways to die than even a manic-depressive lemming would be comfortable with. This was a game that didn't know whether it wanted to be a "Dustborn," an "Avengers" spin-off, a low budget animated video, or an actual video game. As my Mom used to say when she was utterly confused and had no idea what to do: "I didn't know whether to 💩 or go blind, so I closed my eyes and farted." 🤷♂️

It’s more Fable type of game with less good humor. It’s a fine game, but not a direction I want BW type of games to keep going down. @RedbeardflynnRollsAOneАй бұрын
When you say Bioware, I think it has to be compartmentalized a bit. Baldurs Gate and Jade Empire for example are going to be very different from ME2 and Dragon Age Inquisition. Company with a *very* long history. Storywise, this is pretty right on from what I've experienced thus far for DA. I do think the Dialogue and character development of companions is less than I had hoped for, same with the impact of choices. But I found the talk of fable interesting sinec if this was Fable, I'd be very frustrated. Fable, I'd suggest more than DA by far, is defined by Dark british humor and choice, the ability to be an absolute jerk or the paragon of virtue. If the fable we get in 2025 is linear, I'll be dissapointed. Fable needs choice and dark comedy to work.
@Trace153Ай бұрын
@ I meant fable more in the combat. Revisit Fable 3 and you can see same type of style. But fine let’s move it to a bubble and forget other games exist including games in the same series. I could go on for days on the issues I have in DAV which just means there is gold under the crap. If I just hated it and thought it was shit there would be little to talk on. The game feels like there is several different teams ranging from level of skill, level of tone, and level of direction. Which leads me to blame the director staff. They had talented people working on it. They have $ behind it and time to build it. But no one to make sure each section got the balanced attention it deserved. Some areas of the game are top tier while others are mid to low. Which leads to all the mixed opinions people have had on these game. It will be forgetting and I expect this to put the franchise back on ice if not completely shelved. I rather talk on and play indie games that at this point are just more fun for my time.

Honestly, I've been playing for 20 hours like it was nothing because all the fun I'm having and as a fan of all BioWare games since their beginnings I can only say good things so far, I'm loving everything to the fullest. To get a downside maybe playing in Nightmare mode, as I always do in each installment, everything seems very easy. I do not know if it will be harder (some bosses and monsters are that's for sure) but I'm having more skills and gear and survive is not very complicated, and that without focusing on secondary stats yet, without enchants or stronger equipment like the red ones (uniques) that grants some huge stats and passive bonuses, you can see that it is more focused on action rpg is a fact, but not a bad thing. I still have a LOT of gameplay ahead, and more and more things are opening up to do, experience or explore. I love the scenarios, the combat, our codex, the quests, the lighthouse, the story so far, the smaller maps with areas that open up as you progress (something like GoW) on which you can return later for extra things (exploration, quests, reputation, gear, lore...), the characters, yes there is still gore... there is lot to do and see. I don't know, I don't understand where the flaw is for some, play it first and then draw conclusions. I'll keep playing I can tell you, I'm hooked! 🙌

It's nice to see more and more streamers coming out and being HONEST about their experience with the game. It's not perfect, but I can overlook most of the 'drama' simply because it's such tiny part of the overall experience. People complaining about a 2 min 'gender lecture' dialogue sequence that CAN be skipped, in a game that goes for over 50 HOURS... give me a break.

Yes! 10/10 here. Its a cinematic action game, with a few huge choices. The first few hours were slower, collecting companions and learning mechanics. Then the story takes off and I couldn't put it down! I was initially disappointed that Rook had to be nice, and also that I saw/fought no slavery as a shadow dragon. But this game gave me something amazing in return. The most fun combat ive had in a long time (in any game). And the most incredible story thats both harrowing and unpredictable. My biggest tip is DO NOT SKIP the wolf idol side quest from the Inquisitor. I wont spoil it, but if you love lore and history in Thedas, you NEED to do this questline. The writing in this game is very good. With the exception of a few early(!) bits that feel hamfisted/contrived/awkward. These make up about 3 minutes of the 20 hours I've played. 10/10 for me. I'm 43 hours into the game so far (so I felt safe watching this). Honestly, I hope you'll have to eat your words about decisions in the game. I have a sneaking suspicion some of the smaller ones may bite us in the butt (or help us). At the very least, some seem to influence future dialogue (like trading 'verbal jabs' with Solas). I am eagerly looking forward to finding out how this all shakes out and how the game ends. I'm drinking up all the lore they're giving us. As for my playthrough, I chose to be an elven Antivan Crow spellblade mage, who is romancing Lucanis (whose voice reminds me a lot of Zevran, who is my canon romance in DA:O). I'm having a ton of fun and enjoying the story and lore. I haven't had any issues with the dialogue or writing, with perhaps one small exception (all I'll say is that I am transgender, and so is my Rook, and there's one little cut scene early on that made me wish they'd chosen more in-world appropriate terminology). However, this won't affect most players as they probably won't chose to play trans characters.

Sounds more like they are trying to push their own agendas vs objective reviewing the game. I've played about maybe 10 hours of the game on pc and I share your mindset so far. Its in the middle. Not the greatest like some reviews say and its not the worse like other reviews say. Its cool. I played Inquisition a LONG time ago at first I was not happy with the movement of the characters. Was a bit slow and needing to hit sprint key to move faster maybe groan. It took me a few minutes then it hit me...oh wait...this is how it was in Inquisition lol. Still in 2024 expected better. Movement isn't as smooth as other games I played. That aside the story grabbed me. I want to see how it ends. Would be nice to have a larger field of view when fighting. those tight shots in combat arent the best imo. Dialogue is...yea eh. Some dnt make sense. Others not bad. Its a cool game. Would I pay $70 for it for what I have played so far? Hell no. But game doesn't suck imo. Thanks for vid.

I always try to be aware that it's just *my* feelings on the game and I think people are best served when that's balanced so they can make their own opinion, talking about what I like and what I don't but also realizing some people may absolutely hate the combat, but love the dialogue and that's valid too! And I keep hearing that act 3 is epic so I'm getting really excited as the story has been picking up more and more.

Okay you do seem to be giving a pretty good review. I don’t love some of the things they did but I’m willing to overlook them. It’s good to see an objective review. Some people say the dialogue is exquisite and I just don’t see how anyone can say that. I know the clips going around are the worst parts but good gosh they are bad. You convinced me to try it one day. I think a lot of it looks a bit immersion breaking and cringe. Not the topics themselves but there’s just no nuance. I think great writing can win anyone over, it has me in the past, unfortunately that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

It's not a good DA game or RPG but it should be played? These reviews are so inorganic.
@RedbeardflynnRollsAOneАй бұрын
What? That's what you got from this review where I say it's got great action rpg combat with more tactical rpg elements than it initially seemed and the story is a good da story with a lot of great da dark fantasy? and that for me it's sitting above dai but below Dao? 🤔

My let's play is on here too if you want long form. But you're best off just playing it yourself to formulate your own opinion

@RedbeardflynnRollsAOne it's the dialogue man. Smh. I just cant get into characters that sound like they are having a conversation while waiting for their frappuccino before midterms. I respect your opinion though. Thank you for sharing your view of what is positive.

@@MichaelChapmanArt Oh yeah that was my critique in this vid, though. Dialogue doesn't feel quite there. There is *good* writing, in the story especially, but dialogue has been an issue. It's not always bad, though, there is been good dialogue but its mostly been in the emotional scenes at the end of character side quests.

Yes, I also have a lot of fun with the game, many gamer critize the colorful graphics and the cartoonish look of the characters, I think it's designed that way because it's based on the comics from DA instead of the previous games, especially since there are NPCs in DA:V that only exist in the comics. Anyway, if you like a good action-adventure fantasy RPG, this is the game for you

My early thoughts, so far: I'm about 7-8hrs in & loving it. I love the art style. Dialogue is ok. Sometimes the faces look a little weird, but majority of the time, they're great. Love the combat. It's fun I like the linearity (It's still a bit open). I heard it opens up a little more later, tho. Gotta play more to see how the story goes. It's not perfect. No game is.

Very similar to my thoughts. The mission spaces remind me of origins but with the caveat that I haven't seen thst you can swap around as freely and no "random encounrer" travellings between them.

Inquisition was way better, in my opinion. I am not surprised that it won game of the year.
@RedbeardflynnRollsAOneАй бұрын
Dialogue and story so far I agree. Combat and world design? I'd disagree. If i could have had this combat in iInquisition or all the choices of origins i think it'd be one of my favorite games of all time.

The whole idea of a good game is if one has fun.
@jonanderetxebarria9944Ай бұрын
The dialogue is like cinema today, totally safe and correct, which is the opposite of you need in any interesting narrative. And the story cannot carry on the rest of the game, that's why the game feels tedious many times. It's like Bioware took all the wrong lessons from current corporate failures. If I was not a Dragon age fan, I wouldn't have enjoyed the game as much.

Agreed. I like his content that is politcs free. But he has pronouns in his bio so he will give any game that uses them, a glowing review.

Hey, c'mon. I thought it was a crappy game oozing with "I'm a childless trans cat-lady but I just know I'd be the best mommy EVAH, and im here to school the world with some knowledge no one else has ever been smart enough to think of yet" vibes, but RedBeard is still entitled to play it and tell us what HE thought of it. I gave it a thumbs-up for that reason alone; he's definitely not a paid shill, and I always reward authenticity, even if I don't agree with it. After all, if no one is honest about where they stand and what they think, then none of us will ever be able to have any kind of a civilization. And I'm kinda attached to civilized humans as a whole. 🤷♂️ P.S. I hate pronouns too, and I don't use them because I don't buy into the message behind them. As a whole. But in ANY movement, even the ones you absolutely despise, you find good people who aren't represented by the worst examples of it. Put the paint spreader down, or the rest of us won't be able to tell you apart from the bad folk.
