I had the revelation a while back that almost all of Goku's friends were villains, or at least bratty rivals like Krillin. Yamcha, Tien, Bulma, Yajirobi, Piccolo, Oolong, and Vegeta have all tried to kill or hurt him.

There’s really only 3 characters that fight with strategy: 1) Piccolo does the most 2) Goku second 3) Vegeta third If you don’t think Vegeta does, watch his best fights and include Semi Perfect Cell, watch how he systematically gauges their strength and then rips them to pieces. Goku’s usual strategy is by starting in base to test his opponent and watch how they fight. But he certainly uses moves to distract or deceive his opponents, or things like the Solar flare. Piccolo is just an all around thinker, so he’s thinking all the time, no matter what. Gohan is like that too, but unlike the other 3 Gohan isn’t a warrior. He’s a fighter, but not a warrior. It doesn’t come naturally to him. So his application of smarts doesn’t carry over seamlessly to fights, he can probably think up a strategy but can’t do it on the fly.

That was the second intense moment in this series, right after Piccollo sacrifice for Gohan. Also before Vegeta really thought he is a Super-Saiyan and that was not nearly enough for his Nemesis..

Strategy tended to matter a whole lot more in the Dragon Ball days where it wasn't just a matter of powering up to a new transformation and blasting the target into oblivion. In DBZ, fight scenes were more often than not, just a matter of who's power level was higher, not who came up with any sort of complex battle plans.

Vegeta has a good back story, because they want you know & like him. And other enemy without a back story is meant to remain seen as an enemy. As giving a back story can humanize them. And Goku always battle with strategy, but when he doesn't have information, then he goes in to learn the strength & limits of his enemies. Goku literally grows on information, which is how he learn new abilities from enemies. Gohan is book smart, but its all academic, not war strategies. His book smarts is an actual hindrance. That's why the dynamic between Goku & Chi-chi is the way it is, despite that both Chi-chi & Ox King were martial artists themselves. It sucks, but Chi-chi has trained Gohan only a little in movies, and trained Goten more. However within shows, Chi-chi only becomes less obsess with Gohan & school in DBZ Super, as Hercules gives Goku wealth for saving the world from Buu & Cell. In DBGT, even after receiving that wealth, Chi-chi still wanted to Gohan to remain academic but focus on parenting, because of Pam. Her character didn't change, though her perception was slightly changed when Vegeta revealed that Saiyans select opposing partners, because the conflict in enticing as a Warrior race. Both Bulma & Chi-Chi are Goku's & Vegeta's aggressive partners, who are always yelling at them, because its arousing to them.

Not just Piccolo and Vegeta, DB DBZ they all have this running thing where they turn villain into a future hero. Freeza was the first to break the chain otherwise every one who had a significant part turned into a hero. Oolong, Ox king, Yamcha, Tien, Chaiozu, Piccolo, Vegeta, Android 16, 17 & 18, Buu/Uub, Beerus.

Villains who became heroes are pretty widespread in Dragon Ball, if you think about it. Bulma pretty much immediately shot Goku in the head after they met. Yamcha was the first villain in dragonball. Krillin was Goku's rival at the beginning of their training. Tien and Chaotzu both started off as villains. Piccolo was, of course, the demon king. Vegeta was a villain before Goku wore him down into anti-hero, and then eventually all the way hero. The androids were made to kill Goku, but 16 and 18 both turned. Fat Buu started off as a villain before being separated from Kid Buu. Heck, I hear that Lord Freezer here is now an ally, if not an actual hero. So the trend is pretty well established :P

In Super Gohan basically became a strategic fighter with Piccolo. With this though one on one fighting Vegeta is probably smarter. And something I think most people forget but Goku from early Dragon Ball was a gifted and unorthodox fighter using strategies that would sometimes even be considered cheap while also having the ability to learn how to fight and abilities in incredibly small time periods. They are all genius fighters in their own way.

About the thing that Gohan should be more of a strategic warrior than a "raw power": Yeah, and that's not just about Gohan. Piccolo, Trunks and I think Vegeta (but mostly Gohan, Piccolo and Trunks) are also supposed to be "smart characters". Yet we rarely see Dragon Ball characters thinking about any battle strategies. I think Akira is just kind lazy to think about these things too much or he think it's unnecessary for the Dragon Ball (or both). And then decide to just puts his characters into "tank and attack" mode 90% of the time.

i like the idea as gohan as smart fighting, not power fighting, unfurtunatlly, as we know know, cell saga tried to pass the torch, then didn't, and then what place does he have? they can never decide, so instead of dissapointing half of everyone, they dissapoint everyone over and over, by fliping on this with no rationalle for the lack of consistancy other than, he dosn't train, but then he does, and boom!, but.... like...... that makes no sense either! why stop training at all? your wife is an ambitious fighter! oh..... yeah....... humans peaked... and .... toriama........ takes warrior women and gives them babies and decides they cant fight anymore..............at least 18 was invited to the tournament of power

Understanding this is just a made up show and all, but the love people have for Vegeta is kinda scary. Like, he's killed more people than Hitler, blowing up planets and such. So for example, what if Hitler turned it around and started making some "Character development" would you see him in a different light? Hell no. I just find it weird is all.
