Dragon Quest Builders Review

I had never actually played a Dragon Quest game and wanted to play an RPG. Only issue is it takes some serious effort for me to stick to one thanks to grinding and such. And being a young kid when minecraft was hitting it big, I was hoping this would help bridge that for me. The little knowledge if the series I have from SSBU is that these games have Hero. So, of course, I named my character Hero, only to be told immediately after the tutorial that I'm not a hero through the line: "Hero, you're not a hero."

Yes you can mine underground, and yes you can build anywhere. There's a also a free mode aside from the story mode. Free mode is to DQB what creative mode is to Minecraft.

CToretto I should also point out that the free mode in DQB is not exactly like creative in Minecraft. I mean yeah it serves the same purpose to an extent, but you have to unlock free mode first by completing chapter 1 of story mode, and even then you unlock recipes to use in free mode through story mode, so it's better to finish story mode first. You also can't fly like you can in creative mode, and you have to farm everything from scratch rather than have an infinite number of any block at your disposal. But many people don't seem to have a problem with that from other peoples' reaction to finding that out that I've read, excpt the occasional person that is bummed out about it. I have mixed feelings about it. On one hand I sometimes like to have an infinite number of blocks, but I sometimes like to build in creative mode the same way you do in survival mode. And DQB's free mode serves that purpose great.

Loved the demo, it reminded me of Dark Cloud 1 & 2 for the PS2. The difference between this and Minecraft is that it has an overarching RPG story, questlines and NPC's etc. It's not *just* a sandbox playground like Minecraft.

Having tried MineCraft Dragon Quest Builders is way better. The pixels in Minecraft hurt your eyes to badly it's horrid just to look at. Dragon Quest on the other hand is so smooth and just feels so nice.

What makes me sad about this game is that it's not going to sell as well as it deserves due to bad marketing on Square Enix's part. A crazy amount of people don't even know it exists. So SE will mark it down as another under-performed western localization and feel even less like localizing future DQ games, which is the reason multiple recent DQ games have not been localized. It's such a great game. Everyone knows about a new main FF release, and new KH releases, due to the insane amount of marketing they put behind those series. They don't even put half of that amount of marketing behind a DQ game. Sad really. If they did more people would notice.

My daughter loves this game. It is better than Minecraft in so many ways. The music is great, very nostalgic. I like that online players aren't saying inappropriate things like they do in Minecraft. She has built an impressive dirt castle in the demo on the Switch with secret underground tunnels. Great relaxing game for me and my kid :)

The only thing I hated about this game were those damn annoying ghosts that come out at night and chase you that also can teleport into your base even when you have Obsidian walls, a moat surrounding your base, extra layers of walls outside your base, and those pushy blocks that push monsters away a number of tiles.

AnimeFightsHD I completely disagree. The last story had an amazing online mode that added a lot of replay value after you finish single player. So many RPGs lack play value once you clean up the super bosses.

Though DQB is pretty great and I am a big fan, I’m a bit disappointed that some more negative points weren’t taken into acount. I’m only speaking from my experience from the Nintendo Switch, but I find the limited underground areas as well as the limited town-building areas a pretty big flaw, along with the fact that one of the most often needed resources, stones, are so tiedious to run around to obtain. Eh, IDK, I still love the game, but these are some pretty big annoyances...

Yup... good job on the advertising square. It does actually play a lot better on VITA because the touch screen is actually really helpful in accessing items very quickly. PS4 version has more polish but I adore the game.

I've been hyped for this game for about a year. I have a Japanese account on PS4 and played the demo there first. Only let down obviously is the multiplayer. I could play this forever on my own don't get me wrong, but there'll be a time where NPCs and building/scavenging on your own will become boring. I'm still getting a copy regardless.

I wouldn't really recommend the Vita unless you play a lot of JRPGs/very niche Japanese games/PS1 games (it might even be the best console for them if that's your bag). It took a few years, but the Vita's game library is in a good place. If you DO enjoy those types of games, it's a great little system--- more so if you can find it for a cheap price. If you don't like those kinds of titles, not so much.

They had to translate the game and submit it to the esrb for rating... so a year after the Japanese release is fine... much faster than Saga with the Yakuza games.

minecraft is like $20 and like $5 on phones. $60 for this is a lot. I got my copy on amazon for $40 and me being a huge fan of DQ is why I got it

Why the hell not? They did it in Japan, and they have English version for PS4 it's just a matter of copy pasta. I'm sorry not all of us can afford to buy consoles.

Sony and Microsoft aren't here to cater to you just because you can't spend the money, that's not how business works. Everything evolves, everything eventually needs to be upgraded. Guess what, I didn't get my PS4 day one, I waited 2 years to be able to afford it and got mine last February with my tax refunds. But understand the ps3 is outdated, very outdated, simply play a PS4 and you will see it. And saying just because they did it in Japan they should do it here is dumb. Fans of Dragon Quest had to beg and plead for the series to come back to the US and we just started to get them, remakes with the 3DS, and the recent Dynasty Warriors esque spinoff. They will not port to ps3 in the US because the ps3 is now known as a dead console, only thing you will see coming out on last gen now are cheap 3rd party games that need as many sales as possible.

Why is it dumb? It's already ported in English and in PS3, it's an easy port. If they didn't want a real release, they could've released it in PS Online. And I don't get the hostility simply because I asked for a port. You already have your copy and your PS4, it's not like I'm asking for the PS4 port to be cancelled for a PS3 port. Like I offended you by asking the manufacturer for one as if I offended you personally. LOL I'm saving up for a newer PC, I'm not gonna buy a next gen. I'd rather put it my money in my stocks than buy a new one. And all the other fluff about Dragon Quest being here, what does that have anything to do with a PS3 port? Like Square Enix will cancel Dragon Quest series in NA because there are people asking for more just in a different port (which they already did in Japan). I don't see how increased demand = cancellation of the series if anything that validated that they should make more because it will sell more. It's like it's the manufacturers that you need rather than they need you. LOL. At the end of the day so what, I'm the one missing out, you will get a copy and you get to enjoy your "marvelous" PS4, don't blow your rectum because there's a few of us who asked like I'm taking away something from you. LOL

personally, i wished there was some kind of multiplayer with it even if its just 1 or 2 people playing with you. but still i look forward to getting it sometime.

I would really really love to buy this but a lot of these DragonQuest games are single player and I find that once they have released it, patched a few things and released a few add ons they just ditch it entirely. I have experienced this many times buying their games. This seems like it's heading the same direction and I will not be buying it unless they add a multiplayer function.
