I got this game for free for being a long time Nintendo Power subscriber. I was shocked to get an actual NES cartridge in the mail. What a gift it was. It started my life long love of RPG's. Great memories and a great soundtrack to boot.

As I recall from a video I watched, this game was a total flop in Japan so Nintendo gave them away with Nintendo Power subscriptions as a promotional tool and it became a huge hit [EDIT: as a promo tool in USA and subsequently became a huge hit in USA]. I remember my older brother getting the subscription for the free game and it's possibly my all time favorite NES game.

Reading this legit made me smile. This game actually terrified me. I was 6 years old when I first played this, or was it 8? Regardless, I remember having such limited vocabulary. I couldn't understand "thee" and "club" and "dmg". It's funny how this kinda taught me a little bit of old medieval culture with the way of talking. I thought a "club" was like a nightclub and I would read "dmg" as "D.M.G." The music scared me too, it was so mysterious, yet cheery at times. The battles I couldn't handle

Sound effects: The two-note jingle that plays before an enemy attacks you ("The [name of enemy] attacks! Thy Hit Points decreased by [n].") The two three-note jingles that play if you fail in your attempt to attack an enemy (lower pitched) or vice-versa (higher pitched). That is: "It is dodging!" or "The attack failed and there was no loss of Hit Points!" for the lower-pitched jingle, and "A miss! No damage hath been scored!" for the higher-pitched jingle.

This game started it all for me in the RPG department, I grew up on those old King's Quest computer games and this felt like the first thing on the NES close to them. This is the hardest one for me to want to go back and play today since it always felt repetitive and slower. Only having 1 member in your party was tough back in the day. Still had fun playing it and credit it with addicting me even more to games lol

I remember when I was about 3 or 4 my mom was playing this in the living room. She had the NES on the floor and she used to stick match books between the tray and games because the systems pins got loose. Anyway, she got to the Dragon Lord and his battle theme started. Me, knowing how important this was, started to do this little march/dance in time with the song and fuckin kicked the NES by accident. Froze the game and everything, my mom started yelling at me and I ran off out of the room. Knowing now what a pain it is to get all the way to Castle Charlock, down through the dungeons, and survive against the knights and dragons, yeah, Id yell at me , too.

Dragon Warrior...First RPG I ever played as a kid (when NES came out to put my Atari2600 to shame, to give some insight on how long I have been gaming. So old, right?! Pah!)I remember my younger brother was chomping at the bit to play this game as a toddler... Ironically enough(?), my twin (who hoarded all controller time with me as we took turns leveling and beating the game), well, he would give up video games right after that. My younger brother though? Took to them like gloves fit the hands. He has, since those thirty-plus years ago, taken up naming his characters (even his profile gamertags) after my DW character... Dukie B. To all the younger brothers (gamers) out there that are now carrying the torch....I fucking love you guys 😎 As do I the person who posted this soundtrack. (Thank you!)

The music scared me too, it was so mysterious, yet cheery at times. The battles I couldn't handle. The way the screen would spiral and show a monster, the first monster ever... a slime. The way the graphics were, they were so primitive, which allowed my imagination to take place. That stupid slime was too happy, how could something with such a smile hurt me? And when you got hurt enough, your screen would go red?! My heart rate would go up, I would sweat. Every hit I took made me feel like my blood was pooling on the floor. It's crazy how back then things were visually limited, which allowed our minds to fill in the rest. To this day, I get uncomfortable listening to the battle music. I would actually listen to it when something in real life is actually stressing me out and it would remind me of when I was a child - no longer a big deal. Funny how things work out huh?
