I love your Studio Ghibli drawings!🩵 I love how pretty it turned out! I also struggle with perfectionism even on my sketchbook sketches so I understand how you feel! I’m also trying to let go the pressure of making everything beautiful because I feel it’s not letting me improve my art as much as I should. Thank you for showing us the real process of your art, sometimes you have to erase a drawing 50 times before making something decent 😂 Keep up with the great content!🤍🥺

Thank you so much! ❤️ and yes, the perfectionism and self-doubt get turned up even more when filming, on top of everything else haha... I hope we all get to be a bit more relaxed and playful, so we have the energy to dive back into "serious" art! ... I had to chuckle when editing the drawing footage and seeing how many times I restarted. 😂😅

you got me interested in pastels as a medium, not gonna lie 😭 i've only ever been using pencils to draw and i've been thinking of trying a new medium soon -- watercolors came to mind first, but i've been considering pastels too while watching you work with them 💛 would you recommend oil pastels to a total beginner to this medium? from what i've gathered from this video, they probably won't give me a lot of trouble since they blend nicely. also, the "drawing" technique you mentioned they're well-suited for sounds like a good gateway for someone who's used to drawing :o

Thank you! Honestly, I'm still pretty new to the medium myself - I got my first set last summer and barely used them over the winter! But they're probably the "fastest" medium I own, and they're incredibly fun for quick sketches. :) Depending on the brand, some suit "drawing" techniques more, some "painting" - Paul Rubens and Sennelier, for example, are much creamier, so I prefer those for just blending. I think they're overall very easy to get into, though! (But... watercolors are also fun!! Ah, choices 😆)

Love the illustration even though I'm not a ghibli fan. You did well with the flowers they look like mini fireworks! One reason you may be having trouble with your style, is maybe because you try to infuse it to already established characters. I used to draw copying manga characters (I love Kubo's style - creator of Bleach) until I realized that copying scenes of characters that already existed did not allow me to grow more than just becoming better at drawing pre-existing things. One thing I can't recommend enough, is to create a character from zero (in case you have access to dungeons and dragons character creation sheet please use it) and invest on that character. Only then will you be able to see the full potential of your style and enjoy what it brings with it. Also, I know from experience how harsh one can be with their sketches 😂 I try not to do it and I always end up doing it... No idea how to stop it, if you find a solution let me know 😜💕

Thank you so much for watching! And you're right - I had thought that an animated movie would be a "simpler" choice, to start this series of movie studies, but the art style already being so strong and established made it so much more difficult than expected! I felt like I was fighting the art style instead of going with the flow of the sketch. And I'm so happy you mention D&D! I actually play and also DM, so I have a whole bunch of characters, but I haven't painted them in a while (long campaigns, so the character portrait phase was a while ago) and I'd love to give some of the old or current characters another try. That might for a really fun and relaxing, and stress-free, sketchbook spread! Do you play in any game atm? ❤ We do all put a lot of (useless haha) pressure on ourselves! Someone has to find that magical solution! 😂

Consistency is a very controversial topic in the art world. To me, it depends on what you are doing and what you want to do with your art. If you are trying to get a job where consistency is key in your field, then yes you should work to keep your style consistent. It's needed for things like animation, working in the game industry as an artist, making comics, or working on a large set of images that need to be similar. For a hobbyist like myself, there is no need to be. My style changes depending on my mood when I draw, what I'm drawing, etc. It's part of the expression of the piece, which is the whole point of art in the first place. Self expression. I would be taking that freedom away from my expression if I forced it to be fully consistent, which would cause me burn out a LOT faster. I try not to do that to myself. All in all, if consistency is WANTED, more power to you. If you're forcing yourself when it's not needed, I wouldn't recommend it.

Good point about commercial vs practice or hobby! My commercial art is actually much more consistent, since I aim for the same level of semi-realism, similar brushwork etc in all my fantasy or character art, or even portraits. You bring up being a hobbyist - and that's exactly what these sketches are! Small experiments to draw in my downtime or to test new materials. While I wish my usual style would come through even in these, you're absolutely right that it would probably lead to burnout at some point. I'd been pretty burnt out from client work last month and these sketches were great for recovering that creative spark. I think just looking back at the last few videos gave me whiplash! ^^' Do you have a particular part of your art that you gravitate towards the most? Doesn't have to be a particular style, but something that often catches your attention and interest. :)

@@evydraws-art The main type of art that holds my interest the most is character art when I use it to express something I'm trying to get out. A part of myself that no one sees or even can see, if that makes sense. Lately, when I can even draw, it's of the same character, the one I use for myself, doing things and expressing things that I either want to do, feel, or express. I'm sort of in therapy-art mode currently when I can do it. Being a hobbyist, I can get away with that as no one sees my work anymore. I... have things to work through before I subject myself to algorithms and opinions again. They shaped the way I do art a little too much.

Honestly, the algorithm and social media in general have affected both how we perceive and how we present art - or even how we create it! - and it's a very difficult balance to keep with just the act of creating... We should probably all be taking steps back when possible. :') Character art as a mirror of your own thoughts and emotions makes so much sense! There's a reason we humans have been fascinated with faces and figures since forever - and it sounds like it's very cathartic for you! I hope you find lots of time and peace to paint and draw! 🙂

@@evydraws-art Thank you. Hopefully I will be able to draw more soon. Like many artists, I need it like I need air so without it I don't feel even quite like myself. It is very cathartic and plan to lean into it more. I hope you continue to enjoy your studies and sketches! You seem a bit more free when you do them and that's what I wish for all artists. :)
