Oh kids have a reference for actual danger. The thing is it's so scary they can't actually talk about it. "Get you" can mean anything from hurt you to kill you in any number of ways. It's just better to not think about the details.
@aurora5481
@aurora5481 4 жыл бұрын
"Get you" is basically a loose understanding of death and permanence and that people can disappear from this world in a way where they can't come back, while still being completely lacking the knowledge required to form a full picture of what that happening looks or feels like or to comprehend that the thing they're afraid of is dying.
@Phytobiogenes
@Phytobiogenes 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I’m pretty sure that most children have a form awareness of death naturally and so “get you” means to be taken apart from your current understanding of the world forever even if they don’t exactly know what death itself is.

When I was a kid, I was afraid of this character that I called "the chattering Englishman." Let me explain. So there was a fan/light combo in the center of my bedroom ceiling, but it was a little off-kilter and one of the fittings of the light bulbs was very slightly misshapen. So, occasionally, the bulb would rattle gently in its fitting. And it sounded very much like a teacup clattering on a saucer to my young child mind. So I imagined this English dude with a taut skeletal-looking face and top hat and such standing by my bed drinking his tea while I hid under the covers (I basically always slept with the covers over my head). I don't know what I thought he'd do, other than just be real creepy and drink his tea, but I can tell you that it kept me awake many nights. And one night the bulb rattled loose and fell to the floor, shattering and making this huge noise, and I thought "Well this is it." But I survived, and after that night I figured out what was happening and was never afraid of him again.

My childhood fear was me wearing a white dress while being trapped in an open field with my heartbeat thundering in my ear, and an unseen narrator just saying I hadn't passed the level. The field was ever expanding until I couldn't see the edge and there was a slight sound of kids laughing to tell me that I was being left behind. I had this dream all the time. It's one of my earliest memories at around the age of 3, and I had it until I was 12. This dream gave me a fear of open spaces where you couldn't see anything on the horizon, or just clear space like my bedroom floor. I was too afraid to get up into bed with a clear floor so I would throw my stuffies strategically onto the floor and lay out my blanket to that I could get up and go to the light switch.

I had a fear similar to this When I was younger I had "Demons" I had three One of them was a pitch black Jaguar. If I got off my bed It would come out And swoop me under.. Never to be found again. This caused me to almost never get out of bed And that turn into me bed wetting.

I also have a dream that I have had ever since I was like 3, (I’m 13), and it’s not scary, I’m just standing in my house while a person dressed in a green suit or a little alien is running around, but I know I shouldn’t go near it or something bad will happen, but I don’t know what that bad thing is. It’s very odd. But my fear is being alone, and it doesn’t help that I see things out of the corners of my eyes, only enhancing the fear

I remember one of my greatest fears as a kid: In the 6th grade for Halloween my teacher read us this story about a kid who moves into a new house. At night he gets the feeling that something is watching him and he keeps having nightmares of a tall shadowy figure standing in the dark corner of his room watching him, or the figure crawling down from the ceiling and getting right up against his face. He tells his parents and friends but nobody believes him, eventually he gets so freaked out he runs away from his home and family. He grows up by himself and does some research on spirits and stuff and learns of a spirit from Native American folk lore that tracks down and hunts its victim for life and can mimic people from their memory. 30 years pass and he doesn’t hear anything from his parents until one night they just show up at his house and tell him how much they missed him and how long it took for them to find him. At first he’s very emotionally shocked, but later, he gets this uneasy feeling so he goes to the bathroom to be alone for a bit. A little bit later his neighbors hear strange noises coming from his house so the following morning the police go to investigate and they find him dead in the bathroom and there are strange markings written in an unknown language on the walls in ink and the dude is dead. They conclude he died of a heart attack and they find his diary that accounts his strange experiences when he was a child, his research on spirits, and how he met his parents on the day he died, but this didn’t make since because the police find out his parents had actually died many years ago in a house fire. They end up concluding the guy had some sort of mental illness and he was slowly going crazy leading up to his death. Still kinda scared of this story to this day.

When I was little, I was afraid of a being I thought of as the Hag. I slept on the top bunk of a bunk bed, and sometimes, I would wake up in the night and I could see sideways into the closet. And on the top shelf existed the Hag, a large and luminous misshapen head- not alive, but aware. It terrified me. I don't know what I thought was going to happen, but the fear was real. I eventually started seeing it as more sad than scary. Since I was the only one who seemed able to see it, I thought it was maybe lonely, trying to communicate or just coexist with someone who knew it was real. I talked to it sometimes, trying to make space for a conversation. It still freaked me out a little, but my developing empathy helped a lot.

This video remonds me of one of my favorite Terry Pratchett passages: “When you were grown up you only feared, well, logical things. Poverty. Illness. Being found out. At least you weren’t mad with terror because of something under the stairs. The world wasn’t full of arbitrary light and shade. The wonderful world of childhood? Well, it wasn’t a cutdown version of the adult one, that was certain. It was more like the adult one written in big heavy letters. Everything was… more. More everything.”

I had a child hood fear that was some what like Jacob’s but creepier. I had one “ monster” who would slowly open my eyes while sleeping and if he ever fully opened them ( which almost happened) he would rip out my eyes and eat them. then leave me there to die. His eyes are horrific where they are wide open and they would be a glowing yellow or green. With a horrible smile. Another one lived under my bed ( wow how original) He would stay there during the day but come out during the night. What he would do it peak his head over the edge of my bed and watch me sleep...quietly. Some times he would be risky and reach his hand towards me. The only way to make sure he couldn’t cut me in to pieces is to look at him. He doesn’t like to be seen. I can sense when he is near and image what he looks like. He kinda looks like a ragged salad fingers. But with sharper fingers and blood shot eyes. I have one who stands at my doors. I know least about him... he can’t open doors but he can enter if you open a small crack. Every night I would shut every door to not let him in. But one time when I was wide awake my door creaked open and no one was in the house. I don’t know how he looks but I honestly glad I never did. ( Sorry this was creepy! These where the monsters I grew up with a kid but I eventually got over them! It sucks being a bored art kid who likes to scare herself as a child)

And as the nightmare went on, the skeleton became more and more charred, and burned. Man, this made me remember one of my brother's childhood nightmares. It was an old lady with a mardi-gras mask (my mother collects masks), who chased him down and turned him into a Werther's Original candy.

That sounds like that one Gravity Falls episode where everyone is chased by the "shitty candy" monster in the smiley face mask.

I remember going to a pantomime with my whole family and having mostly a wonderful time, but one of the interstitial dances had some dancers who were in skeleton suits (black with glowing bones painted on, you know the ones). From then on I was terrified of skeletons all the time. My parents took turns trying to explain why a skeleton cannot pick a lock, climb the stairs, sneak into your room and rattle at you while you sleep, and they swapped whenever they lost patience. God bless them

Comment 310 of ???: Day 2 Could you guys please draw African mythological creatures like the tokoloshe (Jacob may enjoy this one), the grootslang (Nathan... same), werehyena (Karina this one, I beg) and the inkanyamba (for the monster mom herself).

I think trevor henderson's work does a really good job of tapping into these "childhood fear" type monsters. the monsters he draws are grotesque but many of them have no obvious way to hurt you. you just know that they can get you, and whatever that means will be bad

When I was younger I thought that thousands of lobsters lived under my bed and if I got too close to the edge they would come up and snip me. Terrifying, I know

My bed was level with the window in my room, and I lived in the middle of nowhere, so my mind always said that there was a monster that could see heat and was out to get me. I had to stay perfectly still for him to not see me, and he was kinda werewolf looking

A while ago you adorable goofs gave each other characters to draw from memory, and they ended up being on teams for some reason. My humble suggestion is that NATHAN and KARINA team up against JULIA and JACOB to draw the strongest super friend team. The twist is that each artist will be given two character archetypes (eg. Wizard or breakfast mascot or historical figure) by the opposing team, and will have to choose a popular character for each one (so each team will have four characters to draw from memory). The winner is the team y'all deem supreme. And also me for getting my suggestion in. Bonus points if you can find a way to get Megatron on your team.
