"What's that stuff on your back?", I literally laughed out loud. As to the anime female, I'm not sure how anime she is (I don't watch much of it), but she's downright adorable, my favorite of the figures in this video. You're not alone in placing the iris in the wrong spot, and if they're off by even a little bit, it can look super creepy!

Sorry for so many comments these past few days! I have recently been having trouble with reflections, and I didn't know if it would be possible for you to create a video on tips and tricks. There are three that I was thinking about that would be very helpful: drawing light reflecting off of water (maybe on a windy day where there are many ripples), reflection off of windows, to where you get a somewhat translucent reflection of everything, and simply the reflections off of sunglasses or prescription glasses.
@RobertMarzullo8 жыл бұрын
+TheNintenBits I pretty much cheat on reflections. I just flip the image and distort it a bit and then soft erase and draw it to look like whatever material it is over. Just saves time. Thanks for watching and for leaving a comment!

Actually, I'm glad you left the mistake in, and respect the way you handled it. Lets me know I shouldnt beat myself up when I make a mistake. That's always been my Achilles heel. I'm to hard on myself. I handled it better when I was younger, but now I find it very difficult. I know why. It's from my PTSD. I'm not trying to use it as an excuse, but trust me...When you get the wind knocked out of your sails several times in your life...you really do become more cautious...about everything. That includes...why chase after another dream...When all the other ones failed? I swear sometimes, I hate the way my brain thinks. It's a fucking horror show, however, I will admit, it's gotten 10000% better in the last couple of years. What I'm trying to say is thank you for the video, and keep up the good work.

I thought long and hard about buying Sketchbook after watching your video, so I went ahead and bought it. I've also been studying Andrew Loomis online, but I have to say, for whatever reason the jaw lines have consistently given me the most problems. I think it because men physically looked different in facial features back then compared to what they look like today. Maybe that is just the representation in art that makes them look different. I have noticed that much of Loomis' work I can pick out different characters in old tv shows and movies that Loomis captured and represented, but not so much today do actors look like they did then. Maybe it is subtle but there is a difference. I study film and characters, maybe that is why I have noticed it. But perhaps you could update Loomis and make a new book.

I'm starting to get slightly competent at doing sketches of heads at various angles (I find the looking down angle to be the most difficult) but as soon as I start applying line work in a new layer and then hiding the sketch layer underneath it looks awful. How do you go from the sketch phase to the line work phase? Even thought my sketches are very messy, they have a far more organic feel to them than the line work. Also, when I say line work I mean drawing a solid like around the main edge part of my sketches...

Hi, very nice video. I have a pair of questions: This software Sketchbook, I understand that it is maybe the most popular software for drawing, especially comic drawings and stuff like that. Am I right? The other one is if you use it with a drawing tablet and optical pencil because it seems like if it were directly with the mouse. I am sorry, I am not very familiarized with these things so perhaps the question is a bit naive. Thanks!
@RobertMarzullo8 жыл бұрын
Sketchbook Pro is pretty popular. I would say for comic drawing Manga Studio / Clip Studio Paint is the most accepted for its various tools. I am using a Wacom Cintiq in this video. I couldn't draw this well with a mouse. The tablet gives you pressure sensitivity where a mouse could not. I hope that helps you and thanks for watching this channel!

@bloodydove57186 жыл бұрын
talking about the big named artist that only draws a cross for the face.... The better you are at something, the more steps you can skip, because you already understand those fundamentals. Showing your work is for people who're studying. Like... If your a mathematician, you can work out complex problems in your head, you dont need to write down every step. Same thing with artists; the better you are, the less you need to work out on paper, because you already see it in your head. So If you're great at drawing faces, you dont need to sit down and go through every step, working out all the measurements. You already know it, so why not just put down a cross, and do your thing? This is why pro's make their craft look so easy, but when a novice tries to replicate their workflow, their final product looks like garbage. If you're not as good as someone else, you cant expect to do like they do.
@darts_96318 жыл бұрын
This looks like a useful technique, albeit very complex, I found John Buscema's technique in How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way alot easier and straight forward.

True. It doesn't really require this way of doing it. It just seems to help some people line up features and proportions a bit better. Thanks for your comment!

I want to make my own comic/cartoon. What is he best way to get recognized and published?
@BlackSpark138 жыл бұрын
+Cael Schwark Get the comic out there. Post to comic sites, art sites, forums, get it cycled via word of mouth... It has to be good content for people to actually read it. I recommend fan art and adult comics to get started, and then once you get your name out there, then you can make the more niche-genre comics. The artistic appeal isn't as important as content. Other than that, it's really just luck.
@caelschwark64778 жыл бұрын
+Colter Hicks thank you. I'm already preparing my ideas
@BlackSpark138 жыл бұрын
+Cael Schwark if you want, we could collab. I work with manga comics and need some inspiration or... more like a reason to keep drawing. and working alone with no one else that draws is kinda... lonely.
@RobertMarzullo8 жыл бұрын
+Cael Schwark Great ideas mentioned in this conversation. One thing to add is start making videos of you comic and put them on KZbin. It is the second largest search engine ( Second only to Google and they own KZbin so that should also tell you something ) so you can build a following much easier by taking advantage of it. But as Colter mentioned, Content is king! Create great works and others will help you show it to the world! Good luck to you and thanks for watching this channel! :)

I really like you and your personality and watch most of your videos and idk why I'm making this comment but I don't find comic book faces in the western style that appealing idk it's just that it's hard to represent something we see with edges and form with lines. And I appreciate the less is more aspect ALot but I'm sure this will help people who absolutely indulge themselves in this style haha
@RobertMarzullo8 жыл бұрын
+Edgar Garcia Thanks very much for the cool comment. I agree with the less is more aspect as well. It is a great exercise to see how good of a face you can draw with the least amount of lines. Hmmmmmmm? Maybe the topic of a new video! :)
@regalragaci72508 жыл бұрын
Robert Marzullo Yeah I've always found that it's cool seeing people do stiff with so little lines because even with lots of lines it's still hard sometimes to make it read quick and fast. I look forward to every video you make. But these tutorials where you show how to do stuff help ALot more so keep it up
@lanadelrey38218 жыл бұрын
+Edgar Garcia I mean these are just construction lines tho...not necessarily a style per se. Anime (good ones with the correct proportions) are drawn with tons of lines too. They are just cleaned up later on.
@regalragaci72508 жыл бұрын
lana delrey I mean like a finished piece I highly encourage to go all out with guidelines but when it's cleaned up as you can se styles like this remain with some little of lines everywhere to add texture and age which isn't completely to my likeing but I'm not burning anyone over a Cross because of it

Does Andrew Loomis method helps make you a better comic book artist?
@IAmWBeard4 жыл бұрын
It def helps make u better artist overall but there are other methods that are basically variations of the loomis method. The loomis method is more a way to check your work as you go, are things even, are they proportional, are they located correctly. It's essentially perspective lines for a 3d body, kinda.

There is no better "how to draw figures" method than signing up for some life drawing classes. I think these people like loomis who punt out "how to" books are just ripping off the market. A years worth of weekly life drawing classes will cost more than a book but will pay back tenfold. Check out the original action comic in the Sistine Chapel, and reflect on the fact Michaelangelo didn't learn to draw from teach yourself books.
