Hi Muireann McQuillan, you're not alone in this world, I live in the tropic, and I'm using hats and sunglasses since my treatment with tretinoine does my skin more sensitive to sun, and yet here, people looks at me like I'd be crazy, because they don't have an appropriate skincare education, lol, but it really doesn't matter to me, while my skin is protected.☺️

Dr Dray I just want to say how much you have changed my skin, not just my skin, but my mindset about skin health in general, I used to have bad cystic acne, this was in highschool and it made me so depressed all the time. I was extremely self conscious and never wanted to go out or be social bc I was afraid of people judging my skin, I started watching your channel about a year ago and let me just say you have absolutely transformed my skin. I have soft and glowing skin every single day bc of you! Thank you so so so much like I can’t say thank you enough. Your amazing and please keep up the awesome work you do😊

I use a cleansing balm for when I wear makeup (right now I’m using Heimish). CeraVe hydrating cleanser, CeraVeSA cream in the tub (nightly or daily when i need a boost). Game changer for me was Pixi Glow Tonic (5% glycolic acid). It’s gentle exfoliation for 2x/day. Day moisturizer is typically a light lotion. I’ll be switching to a drug store product as soon as my Laniege water bank serum lotion is done. In my younger years I over-exfoliated my skin, hence broken capillaries. As for the hyperplasia, I think that’s hereditary. I also inherited my Dad’s youthful “Dorian Gray” genes. Don’t smoke/vape, stay hydrated. Oh, i forgot most important part - Also follow with a high spf sunscreen (Heimish again, but trying LaRoche Posay Toleraine UV moisturizer). On days I wear makeup, tinted spf moisturizer as foundation. Ya know, if I were to go back in time to my younger self I’d tell me to use sunscreen, wear sunglasses, and keep up with my eye prescriptions. Sorry for the response being all over the place, I haven’t had my coffee yet. ;) Edit: between the SA cream and the Glow Tonic, I keep most texture/flaky issues at bay. Doesn’t irritate me.
@cathiclark72636 жыл бұрын
thank you Jean. I have no idea why I have SH, not hereditary or shared w sibs, but we do/did all have oily skin. Grew up in the tropics, so made worse by humidity and of course, sun damage. I have worn sunscreen since my early 20's and live now in an area w/very low sun (or UV) most of the year. But the damage was done during childhood and adolescence. I will have to look for the CeraVe SA creme. That's a new one for me.

I started using vanicream cleanser and moisturizer and that’s it. I never thought I’d use something with petrolatum as the second ingredient. But let me tell you...my skin is getting better and better every single day. I had been using dr Hauschka skin care for a couple years and I only THOUGHT my skin was looking great. When in reality I was actually constantly getting tiny little whiteheads all the time. Every day, at least one. Somewhere. I thought “what the heck??” Now I know. Dr Hauschka has too many botanicals and essential oils, not to mention alcohol and natural fragrance. Thanks for convincing me that less is more!

Satan invented them. Along with control top pantyhose. Instant muffin top. I digress. Oh, skin type. Usually burn initially but could tan if I didn't slather myself with sunscreen. I got a careful, gradual, natural tan about five years ago and instantly aged my skin at least 5 years. I won't do that again. Hmm, who knew dermatologists and cosmetics ad writers speak different languages? TY, Doc, for making sense. It's refreshing and unfortunately all too rare. I've always thought Americans shower too much. Instead of extra showers in hot humid weather, I like to soak in Aveeno (generic) oatmeal bath (warm, not hot) and only actually cleanse Those Certain Areas. Then slather moisturizer on damp skin. I only shower about 3X a week in winter. Nobody shuns me.

Thank you for mentioning the compulsion to pick at skin. It sounds like a small thing, but for some of us it is a huge problem. And the shame you feel afterwards with the flare up is so embarrassing. I'm not going to defend what I do to my body because even to me it doesn't make any sense, but that doesn't make it easier to stop.

Yes, this was one of the really good parts of this video. I especially liked that dr Dray mentioned possible alternatives like stress balls etc. I'm wondering if something like peeling off nail polish would offer the same stress relief as skin picking? Or even just peeling off paint or plastic coating or something from an object? I luckily don't have much experience with this myself, and when I get bouts of it I've managed to confine it to non-exposed areas of my body. But I have enough experience to know that it is very very hard to stop if you get into it. One thing that I sometimes find soothing when I get the urge is to watch asian comedone-extracting videos, I even made a playlist for myself with the biggest, driest crunchiest cleanest ones for watching when stressed.

Thank you for the note on WHY UVA is bad. As a fair skinned person, I always scoff at wearing sunscreen on cloudy days or if I'm going to be in the shade because it was explained to me as "even if you're in the shade, the sun can still burn you!" And here I am with my fair skin arguing back "That's dumb, I have never been burned in the shade, therefore I'm not going to wear sunscreen every day" So thank you for explaining that UVA leads to inflammation, postinflammotory hyperpigmentation and aging. This is logical and I can actually rationalize wearing sunscreen every day for these reasons. 💜

@DrDrayzday6 жыл бұрын
Yeah i think people who burn easily wind up better off sometimes because they are more likely to avoid sun, fearing a burn, versus someone who tans and seeks the sun to experience the "joys" of tanning (no such thing as a safe tan)

Hi, Dr. Dray! Another great Q&A--thank you! I was thinking about what you said about picking at acne and keeping your hands away from your face when you have a breakout--I have a lot of trouble with this! I found that the hydrocolloid pimple patches (I like the Cosrx ones, but there are dozens out there) have helped me a lot. They keep the pimples clean, protect them from UV rays somewhat, and they aren't irritating to wear. The ones I use are not medicated and they're tinted, so I do wear them during the day. (Well, I probably shouldn't--you can still tell I'm wearing them--but I think my coworkers are used to them now!) I have a question for your next Q&A. Years ago, an aesthetician used some sort of light therapy on my cheeks to deal with either acne or PIH (or both). Ever since, I have these blue patches on my cheeks. I'm planning on talking with my dermatologist about them. So, my question is: what is the best way to prepare for a trip to the dermatologist's so that I can make the most of the limited amount of time we have? What should I take with me (if anything)?
@DrDrayzday6 жыл бұрын
the cosrx one are awesome for that, and i tell people to do something similar with a bandaid (though cosrx is just as good); not sure when your appt is, but stay tuned as i plan to address this in a Q&A soon

I get a terrible rash when I use any products containing dimethicone which is unfortunately in most sensitive skin or fragrance free products. For example I cannot use the Cerave moisturizing cream or Cerave AM/PM, however I love using the Vanicream products and so far tolerate them quite well. The hardest product for me to find was a moisturizing suncreen that was affordable and doesn't cause any issues for my skin. I have recently been using Cerves Ultralight SPF30 moisturizing lotion which is a product I have not seen anyone discuss or review yet and I am loving this. I do reapply frequently and find this to be moisturizing, and easy to use with no cast. For those rare folks out there that have a reaction to dimethicone containing products- This is a great and affordable alternative to the AM and I hope they continue to sell this.

Hi there, this was interesting to read. Except for the "all silicones are bad and unnatural" crowd we rarely hear about sensitivity to dimethicone. My scalp absolutely hates it (but my long hair loves it, so I use two different conditioners), so I've been wary of it in skin care too for a long time. Probably unneccesarily for me, but there are lots of nice products without it - sometimes products that aren't billed as sensitive or even fragrance free are actually just that, you just have to read the ingredients.

Just re-watched this and it was brilliant. I can't use water on my face every day because it's too drying, but at the moment I'm struggling to get all the sunscreen off without it. Water dries my face, so then I go in with a moisturizer, which re-clogs my pores right up.

My scalp has SD (seborrheic dermatitis) and my face is extremely dry. It's always been that way. I use Nivea blue tin as a moisturizer (so yes, that dry) and for my scalp Nizoral 2%, whenever I get flare-ups. My mom has normal facial skin and is extremely dry on the scalp. My dad is oily on the face and has SD on the scalp as well. Odd how that works, isn't it? :D There are often creams in the drugstore especially for dry skin and I give them to my mom, because they are just way too light for me (even La Roche Posay, they work with special water in their products and it's dehydrating, even the things marketed for dry skin). It's why I use the Nivea tin. At least it works for me. I find that most products in the drugstore are geared towards normal skin, no matter what is on the label.

If you’re in Europe, keep an eye open for a brand named ‚Mixa‘. They are a French company and their products have only recently been introduced to German drugstores...no idea if they are easily available elsewhere. I really like their ‚CICA-Creme‘. It’s very similar in consistency to good old Nivea but perfume free and it has 5% Panthenol. They market it as an all purpose creme for face, body and hands...and indeed it is. I mainly use it for my dry hands, but also put in on my lips and wherever else I need something more heavy duty than normal moisturizer. The prize point is about 5 €/50ml...which is pretty decent, imo.

I’d say I truly believe in “skin-type”. I have Uber oily skin. And from what I learnt, oily skin are more often “dehydrated” therefore oil production occurs even more. Of course genes also play a part for the size of the oil glands. My biggest gripe about Brands marketing “oily skinned” products, they very often contain astringents such as alcohol in toner or moisturiser to “control the oil” when in reality, it just makes everything worse, sensitizing the skin and even hurt the skin barrier. Talking about “dehydrated” the best thing to do is hydrate it. I understand that you disagree with a toner. But a toner that does not contain astringent and contains ingredients such as panthenol and hyaluronic acid may truly help. You may find it ridiculous to layer a toner . But basically what it does is hydrating the skin. Of course you don’t have to do it full 7 times. Just three to four would do. In very very light layers. Just three drops per layer. And pat it into the skin and than seal it with something emollient or occlusive.
@baddestdonut86586 жыл бұрын
Just to add, i was talking about “7 skin method” . Toners are also known as “skin” in Korea. You can layer it 3-5-7 . 3 times is good for daily. I truly recommend the Etude Soonjung toner if you’d like to try. Honestly this is truly similar to what you do usually, not wiping your skin after washing and using a hyaluronic acid. But I honestly don’t do what you do haha therefore using a toner does help. And skin care is rather personal.
@baddestdonut86586 жыл бұрын
Green Tree dry skin often times lacks the ability to produce sebum, often dull looking and wrinkles looks more pronounced. What you can do is use humectants such as hyaluronic acid or even honey. You can layer a toner,lotion or Essence about three times and use a thick moisturiser to seal in all your hard work of applying. Or you can use an oil high in oleic acid just a few drops in place of a moisturiser. For myself where I really want to give a skin a “treatment” I go for a 3-2-1 approach. 3 layers of non astringent toners with as less bullshit ingredients such as fragrance as possible, 2 layers of Essence with humectants and other beneficial ingredients and 1 layer of moisturiser. I feel that this would be really helpful for dry skin though it’s just an occasional “treatment” for me as I have oily skin. You can add a sleeping mask as well as those really do nourish the skin as they tend to be thicker than moisturiser , really helps to seal the moisture after those layers applied and you will definitely wake up with a glowing skin. Adding a humidifier could help, or place a wet towel above you when you sleep.
@baddestdonut86586 жыл бұрын
Green Tree there’s no rule to skincare . It’s personal taste. How I do things , u may not like and we may prefer different textures in terms of products such as gel consistency, thick heavy cream or light watery creams. I know people who do not use cleansers in the morning and just give their face a quick rinse. I know people who saturates their cotton pads with toner and wipe off the residue left after sleep. I personally use a cleanser. Maybe you can approach it like dr dray where she applies some hyaluronic acid to her wet face.
@baddestdonut86586 жыл бұрын
Green Tree it kind of surprises me that someone will buy a bottle of glycerin. It is often times a cheap ingredient present in moisturisers or even the cleansers that I use. But it is rather moisturising.

What a great , informative video! I appreciate the list of products you added but how do we know which to use for which "skin type"? I am researching for my 28 yr old son who has dry, sensitive, acne prone skin and has asked for my advice so I naturally turned to you! I will will share your information about other factors that influence the skin. If you could make suggestions from your product list it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Using products for oily skin back in my young adult age caused so much dryness and irritation, and then acne. They contained a lot of alcohol, and other irritants. I had so much blind trust in the cosmetic industry. Thanks for the info, as usual.

We have very hard water, and we are saving for a water softener. Until then, I buy water to wash my face.... I know that sounds a little crazy! It has reduced my skin problems.

That don’t sounds crazy, people in Paris tend to use spray thermal water instead of regular water because they have calcareous water too

Currently trying to clear up PIH (due to breakouts) that has been lingering on my skin for YEARS! I mean, almost a decade 😭 Edit: I love the advice regarding hair. If you have an oily scalp and you’re thinking of getting bangs, please reconsider. That’s the PIH I’m trying to clear right now, as I always had bangs in my teens and even in my early 20s. I got bangs mostly to hide my forehead pimples but they actually ended up making the situation way worse! The PIH on my cheeks and chin due to adult acne in my early 20s seems to be much easier to clear up for some reason.

It never occurred to me that introducing water could actually further dry out the skin. I think you mentioned in a previous video that water introduction was also necessary for the skin, however, so the face should be washed twice a day. Is this recommended for dry skin if I am using products containing hyaluronic acid and other water-retaining molecules?

I'm surprised she didn't mention the effects that smoking has on the skin along with alcohol because there is probably more people who smoke daily than drink daily.

Dr Dray, thank you for you great videos. I learned so much from you, especially about ingredients in skin care. In your future Q&A would you mind talking a bit about perioral dermatitis. It seems that it's a common condition, especially for women. I have a tiny dry rash under my nostril and was diagnosed by my dermatologist with PD, who also suggested 2 months course of antibiotics which I was reluctant to take. I am not seeking a medical advice but rather learn something about this condition and most importantly what ingredients in skin are to avoid. Thanks a lot!

Hello Dr Dray, I found your channel less than 2 weeks ago and oh my... absolutely love it, thank you so much for all the information you share with us. I have a question, I've been on Retin A for more than a year with no visible results and I think thanks to you i found out why... I didn't sunscreen very much 😔, now I do, I use Retin A for anti aging, but I would like to use Differin, do you think it's ok!!!, like one day Retin A, then the next day Differin, I usually take a break on the weekend. Can I use both... can they be use together or best if one day one , another day the other one. Hope you can help me clear my question, and hopefully I can make Retin A work for me now that thanks to your videos you convinced me to SUNSCREEN 🤗

I really struggle with pulling out my hair. I guess better than my face, I assume not so great for my scalp. It's crazy how your brain can focus on something as normal as split ends and turn searching for them into a compulsive harmful behavior. The brain really is something.

I find myself picking at my blackheads not because I’m nervous or anxious, but because they’re quite large and it looks gross. I just want them out of there. So, you wouldn’t recommend extracting those at all? I notice the 1st thing dermatologists do is extract those. Why is it bad to do the same at home. Given I use an extraction tool, use gloves, and disinfect the tools frequently? I use salicylic acid but that can only go so far and it dries my face out. I wouldn’t want to use anything harsher (prescription) because it would be even more drying.
@manifestingjayde25396 жыл бұрын
I so know what you mean, I used to nearly have an obsession with blackheads on my face and for years I would nightly go thru an extraction process to purge my pores of blackheads. I couldn't stand them and it drove me crazy. Of course this process was a vicious cycle as they would come back and I believe I was just likely making my pores larger. This is what ended up working for me and I no longer have this issue and it was something Dr.Dray mentioned in one of her video's. Try using salicylic acid wash after cleansing your face for a bit and then rinse it off. I usually cleanse my skin with a gentle cleanser then use a salicylic wash (I use one that is 2%) and let it sit on my face and then I go about washing my hair, body etc and then rinse my face and do not apply anything on my face after that. That way the medication it's not sitting on your face all night and extensively drying it out. For me this process has been a game changer and really improved my blackhead situation tremendously. It wasn't overnight but with consistentency of this treatment I went from being nearly OCD over blackhead extractions to not even thinking about them because the blackheads have been nearly eliminated. Sorry for the long message but I have so been where you are and I never thought I'd find a remedy that actually worked. Something so simple turned out to be so effective.

manifestingjayde25 thank you so much for sharing your experience. Your comment wasn’t too long in my opinion, as I like details. So thank you. I will keep at it with the salicylic acid. 2% is what I have too. But it’s only been a couple of weeks. I, like many people want results overnight. So, thanks for reminding me that most things aren’t overnight and I have to be more patient. Your comment gives me hope. 🙏
@manifestingjayde25396 жыл бұрын
I too wanted results rapidly and why I have drawers of products that didn't perform immediately and then I would purchase another lotion/potion that promised miracles...sigh..I would literally try to extract every blackhead at night or I didn't feel my face was clean and it drove me nuts. if I only had all of that money back I wasted from products..haha. I did make peace with my large pores because it just is what it is but now that they are much less clogged thanks to the salicylic regimen I described I don't fret over it as much at all. Good Luck! oh...and I totally stopped using any scrubs on my face too....it really was too harsh and I think made things worse but I was brainwashed into thinking I had to use something gritty on my face to remove the blackheads....I was so wrong.
