thanks Dr Dray! ever since I've implemented your routine, it has done nothing but wonders to my acne prone skin. I've never thought of applying a humectant or a moisturiser on top of a wet skin before, and that actually revolutionised my skincare routine! i was so stuck in that skincare craze bandwagon before, buying antioxidant serums, asian toners and lotions, essences and whatnot. it was an expensive habit, and one that didn't bode well with my skin at all. in fact, my skin reverted to its terrible teenage acne that i had. after discovering you i've realized most of the somewhat pseudoscientific skincare claims (nowadays, the marketing angle tries to be scientific with skincare, in an attempt to make it legitimate) are simply an evolution of marketing, not skincare. basically, i went back to my old skincare routine (with a little tweak inspired by you) of BP and moisturiser, with generous sunscreen everyday. thanks Dr Dray, you've spared my skin and my somewhat limited uni student wallet

@AliTass

personally, my experience with most BP products are identical. I've tried Oxy, PanOxyl and generic brands (all not the US brands). You should try to find gel/cream BP that is fragrance free. I suppose (from my observation) that brands like Neutrogena, PanOxyl, Oxy, La Roche Posay, ZapZyt and Clean and Clear (all specifically in the US) offers these. You should check out Dr Dray's recommendation. I personally use 5% because i can tolerate it (my skin has developed tolerance since i've used BP for quite some time), have tried 10% and 2.5% as well, but as Dr Dray has mentioned in her previous video(s), try to avoid 10% on your face because it can be irritating. plus, 2.5% and 5% are just as effective as 10% with less irritation (anecdotally and based on the different claims i've read and watched so far). as for the vehicle, i have yet to try a BP wash and see if it is just as effective and less irritating as a gel/cream, the latter which i have only tried and used.

I consider myself lucky...even when my skin was “oily” nothing ever clogged my pores. My skin still seems to love, thrive and react best to the “supposedly” pore-clogging ingredients like the much maligned silicones, petrolatum, mineral oil etc. under Sunscreen during the day and over Differin at night. I’m now loving Cerave, Vanicream and my much loved Clinique (the DDML lotion & Cream w/mineral oil and petrolatum)...also Clinique’s Moisture Surge Intense w/petrolatum. Isn’t Petrolatum/Mineral Oil “natural” ingredients since they come from the remains of creatures who once roamed the earth millions of years ago? Not sure. However, not ever having had any acne or acne breakouts, I can imagine it’s like walking through a minefield of ingredients! It must be beyond nerve racking to try different products while never knowing how it will affect an individual’s breakouts.

I've been looking into primers and stuff lately that contain silicone, since it's a good replacement for oils (since my skin is oily enough and oil is not so good for makeup staying together), and it's good to see a number of good channels taking the time to explain to the viewers that silicone is not at all comedogenic (it's in acne products and stuff, come on).
@howudoin62

Thank you for spreading the truth about comedogenecity ratings and mineral oil, specifically. There are a few popular bloggers who insist that mineral oil and petrolatum clog pores, suffocate skin (whatever that means) and are unhealthy overall thereby misleading a potentially large number of people on perfectly wonderful ingredients.

My grandmother lived until 84 and had the most beautiful skin. I remember at night she would wear one of those silk hair bonnets and slather her face with baby oil (mineral oil). A cosmetic chemist told me that the best barrier against transepidermal water loss hands down is petrolatum, but it isn't very aesthetically appealing for use alone as a face cream, hence all the formulations.

I must say I was suspicious using mineral oil on my already oily oily skin... but it worked better than any makeup remover and it was so soothing!!!! Now I use mineral oil, gentle cleanser, cerave night cream and differin.... before I found you on KZbin I wouldn’t even moisturize at night with my differin!!! 😳

THANK YOU! FINALLY, someone said it: Marketing! ;) My own experience: I don't have acne, I have dry skin. I moisturize my face every day with pure vaseline and I never ever break out. However, when experimenting with unrefined coconut oil as a moisturizer for my face , I always always "break out." Maybe it's the fact that it's more viscous than other oils and therefore it "hardens" the sebum and so, clogs pores. I can use it on my body and it's amazing for that, but not on my face :/ Anyway, superb video Doc, as always! :) Greetings!

Hey There Luka if you have dry skin then you will need more than vaseline, although it's good to prevent moisture from escaping it doesn't moisturise. I have dry skin (as well as hormonal acne, boo) and one of the best things I've done is cut out foaming products with sls in it. SLS is a harsh detergent and just strips the skin

Awesome. Foundation generally shouldn't break someone out, since it's designed to not be absorbed through the pores, even if there is makeup inside the pores, but you do want to make sure it's properly cleaned off afterwards, with an oil or cold cream or whatever and then all washed off in the shower afterwards with a face cleanser. People put on a LOT of foundation, when you can get away with so much less (Wayne Goss on youtube is pretty good for this). Also no-foundation looks have become so much more popular, and they look really good, even with skin that has things to cover up. I much prefer that look. Just a primer if you want it, then concealer only in places where it's needed and blended up well, and then a tiny amount of setting powder if you want. Then the skin generally looks flawless. Or if there's red spots to cover up, mixing the concealer with some green concealer and THEN applying the mixture is the go. People tend to get a little excessive with this stuff (which is fine if they wanna!).

My face does not like mineral oil or petrolatum at all. I tried the Ponds Cold Cream and my face started breaking out. I stopped using it and my face cleared up. I tried using Vaseline as an occlusive layer and I broke out. Stopped and my face cleared. I bought a Micellar water that contained mineral oil and my face started breaking out again. I wish I could use these products, but at least I know what to avoid.

I do not care what anybody says about you. I have such an admiration for you! I was getting so sick and tired of hearing x procuct is braking me out and shea butter is to be feared and dimethicone is an ingredient from the de..l. You have such an honest, gentle and non-judging way about making clear how all that research was and should be interpreted now. Not based on studies conducted ages ago, and not even on human skin. Don't think x product is the cause per se. You might be going into menopause. You might have put on just put on another brand of makeup or put that stuff on and too often. Why is it that it's always the products are to blame, even if they are the ones that possibly could help us the most? We are living in a circle. Thank you Dr. Dray for giving it to us gently! Im curious to what are some recommended body lotions (aren't too thick) from these brands (eucerin, curel, aveeno, cerave) for face? and whether or not body lotions are safe to use on the face. Thank you for all the tips for skin care you give, I'm super happy there is a dermatologist available to teach the truth about skin care,

I have used mineral oil in my moisturizer (Nivea blue tin, I am extremely dry) for literally ages. I'm 45 and I was dry in my teens too (not due to other products, just like that). I have had acne (cystic) on dry skin in my late 20s but the Nivea never worsened it, on the contrary even. It soothed the dryness of the products I had to use that particular time, before my dermatologist started prescribing me lotions and potions with moisture in them (specially made by the pharmacist). I don't get the entire "mineral oil free", "oil free" kind of thing. I have used sweet almond oil (now hyaluronic acid) my entire life underneath my moisturizer too. I am just that dry. :)

Dr Dray, in my country I can’t find CeraVe, Vanicream or Cetaphil face creams and I really don’t know which of european skin care brands have similar ingredients like this american brands. I can’t order from amazon, or ebay or any other sites because they don’t send to Serbia or if they do, than the shipping is so ridiculously expensive. Thank you 😊

Lately, I've been using a very light amount of vaseline on the dry spots of my face and it has helped. Any concerns with vaseline on the face? It seems like a tiny bit under the eyes helps with the dryness / crow's feet. I have been looking at ingredients lately and it seems that my beloved Vanicream is just glorified Vaseline.

Thank you for this transparent information. Your humor makes it all the more enjoyable. What are the causes of the sacs under the skin that have to be removed completely to prevent regrowth. I had one that showed itself with an enlarged pore. GROSS! I continually emptied until I fiinally had it removed. Is there a prevention? Does this start from a clogged pore?
@DrDrayzday

Thanks! Cysts and dilated pore of winer are common benign skin growths...the cause is not really known but it has nothing to do with clogged pores or skin care products

Currently trying to skin detox and I have acne so when I go to church I must wear makeup because I just can’t but I will come home and instead of wearing it all day I will remove it ASAP. Hope this helps my 36 yr old new acne breakouts (cystic pimples) 👀. Minimizing my skin care routine. And hoping that my Nars radiant tinted moisturizer with SPF doesn’t hurt as bad as all the other horrible foundations I’ve been putting on my face.

Dr. Dray that was what I was thinking too in testing products on animals. Our skins are not the same as rabbits. They should test on people to know for sure if and how it reacts to human’s skins. They think animals can have acne, so it’s logical to test if this creams will caused acne on human.

I have oily skin and any carrier other than water would break me out if it's in a high percentage. Even propanediol (in a product in which it is in the first place in the list of ingredients) broke me out like there's no tomorrow. Actually, I felt uncomfortable since the very first moment I put on that product. I felt as if I had a sticky film all over my face. I guess most of the times you just have follow your gut feelings. If it doesn't make you feel right, then it's a no go.
