Too bad it didn't earn back it's budget. Too bad they've already stated that a sequel isn't likely to happen. I really liked this movie. What irritates me even more is that Robocop (2014), which I didn't care for at all, earned back nearly 3 times its budget.

This movie is leagues better then the normal remakes. It doesn't make things more boring but it does make things more serious and a lot more gritty. It also gets rid of comedy relief for the sake of comedy relief which is the greatest thing that was holding the original judge dread back. The original was cheesy but i still have love for it you should watch both this and the original but honestly if I'd have to choose I'd go with the remake simply because it knows what it wants to be rather then the remake just not understanding if it wants to be a cheesy PG-13 comedy or a Action movie with guns and violence.
@MrPobanz9 жыл бұрын
I liked that the violence wasn't just used for the sake of gore, it fits very well for this movie and its atmosphere. Also every character was written and played very well imo, especially "MaMa", i was concerned that she would be just another lame pure evil villian (actually she kinda was,but:), Lena Headey played this character so well in one of her best roles till now. This women needs more leading roles, by far my favorite actress. EDIT: i dont know why, but somehow i like your name ;-)

@xavisimon30958 жыл бұрын
Each time I see a new Star Treck (and Karl Urban) y remember Dredd and I whant to se a good saga for the franchise. But already in 2012 I was concious that this artistic “super slow motion / 3D effects / shiny lights on crack”, got a reason to be there, the slomo drug (and repeat just the same formula can be boring). I hope they got a new interesting story line for Dredd maybe in open spaces, even if its not 3D (in fact ill prefer a 2D), even if its not slow motion. The bad as law officer, a good storyline, a spectacular post-apocalyptic dystopia, and some action.
@brimbles49998 жыл бұрын
Xavi Simon yea 3D has started to die down with movies but I don't think it would be to hard to pull of a sequel/reboot
@JekaZMD7 жыл бұрын
If they're ever doing a sequel they should drop the fucking 3D, that was probably the main reason why the movie did so poorly at the box office. Also they need to market it better.
@xavisimon30957 жыл бұрын
JekaZMD Avatar did great on 3D, after that we got a lot of crappy “3D adaptations/conversions”. Once people was pretty 3D skeptical we got Dredd doing a good 3D again (I have sen it on cinema but because some friends wanted to go, on the way to the cinema I whats thinking it will be like “mehhhh”). The bad reputation of bad 3D movies, the bad reputation of Stalone Dredd, and the lack of promotion, probably was the reason he performed poorly. As I said I don’t wanted to see the movie, but once I see It I was a fan.

The movie was not made to explain dredds universe it was made for people who are already fans of the comic book the early stories are literally crime happens dredd comes along and saves the day so they basically made a very basic story that could easily fit into one of the earlier case file collections when they we're figuring out what dredd is however eventually dredd becomes a lot more complex with the introduction of the dark judges (alien judges from another dimension that come to destroy megacity one) and if they made a movie of the apocalypse war story line it would probably be the best comic movie ever also dredd as a character can be written as a hero an antihero or villain so basically you got a good standard early dredd story in a movie

I just got my faith back in the movies after 2000, this movie is a masterpiece, the visuals, the actors, the scene, the music were all perfect choice... maybe except for the minor villain, that bearded guy, Ma Ma's right hand, he just did not match the whole thing, he was too casual looking, like someone from the street in 2012... Finally a movie where the hero is not a perfectly shaved teenage popstar, like in the new Robocop, but a pure badass unshaven cold headed macho, like the ones back in the 90's.

you really need to give props to the guy who played dredd, he didn't show his face the entire film and most actors wont go near a movie with no face time. It totally makes the movie too, never seeing his eyes adds to his character, it basically is his character as dredd does no development at all, only the rookie does. The end says it all about who dredd is, what we have seen so far makes us think this was an abnormal bust where shit really hits the fan but when the chief asks him "what happened?", he replies "drug bust" and walks away, fucking badass man. This is the only movie i want to see a sequel to.

Just a shame about the gimmick title, which makes it sound no better than a typical piece of dog turd 3D cash cow flick. The film itself was pretty much flawless and I nit-pick a fair bit with movies, it seemed so faithful to what I always pictured Judge Dredd to be and with movies these days, that's one in a lifetime. I think this is fine - after the apocalypse, buying a new car would be very difficult - you would just make do with old cars that were still on the road ... and Japanese old cars are the best - they run forever [says the owner of a 24-year-old Toyota!] My point is that the future would look just as grotty and horrible as today - something very much like the Mega City 1 shown in the film .. somewhere that's hardly moved on since the apocalypse and is even deteriorating, trapped in an early 21st century timewarp with no hope for any progress towards the future. Not - glossy, futuristic - amazing new technology, and fantastic swishy new cars flying around ... that would be the sign of a vibrant, progressing civilisation, which this clearly isn't. The future we see here is horribly as expected ... terrible and rubbish. And a clear warning of where we are headed.

Fun fact: Robocop was actually heavily inspired by Judge Dredd

IIRC robocop's "you have 10 seconds to comply" was originally inspired by a similar line in 2000AD

Dredd 3D was a sleeper hit which didn't do as well as it should've. My theory is that anyone who saw the old Stallone version probably thought this was gonna be similar and skipped out on it. I think the new Dredd is better than the old Stallone movie.

The thing about Mama is that she cannot have any more backstory. She is a single-issue enemy. She's a giant inside the Peach Trees Hab-Blok, but she doesn't get to have any more backstory because she's just a standard symptom of the insanity of the Mega-City. There are literally hundreds of thoussands like her, each with their own story, and Dredd offs one or more of them every single issue of 2000AD, or twice in the Megazine, except when he's in a continuity which takes him outside Mega-City 1. He can't give them all that attention. Their sad stories, their tragedies and pasts are too bad. He doesn't have the time, the numerous victims of crime don't have the time to delve into their problems and fix them in a more humane way. That's just Mega-City life and the Judge system.

The gritty action, perfect actors and actresses PLUS bad ass music! I would sign petitions all day if that is what it took for a sequel to this! Not a Netflix series either, just another movie!
@iankirkpatrick762210 жыл бұрын
Joe nailed it on the head by saying that the greatest strength of this movie is it's simplicity. I loved this movie because it's a character study between 2 contrasting characters and how they get out of a crazy situation. It's a damn shame this movie did not do very well in the box office because I would love to see more stories that are based around Dredd. If it does get a sequel I'd be pleasantly surprised.

This is one of my favorite comic book movies so far. I love the dark world. I just wish I could have seen it in theaters, I saw it on Netflix for the the first time and was blown away. This always happens to me, I haven't seen a lot of my favorite movies in theaters, like Serenity.

Zag Zagzag It's not a film for people that don't have an attention span past two seconds. I'm glad you found it boring, it makes me appreciate Cauron's masterpiece so much more.
@TrackpadProductions10 жыл бұрын
Zag Zagzag Regardless of the action sequences and animated effects in gravity (all very impressive, I might add, considering how suprisingly little of the film is actually "filmed"), it is NOT an action movie. It's a drama. The film has sequences ranging from 45 seconds to 13 minutes with no cuts in them. Besides, if it was an action flick, the shots would be an average of 10-20 seconds.
@gregorywasdyke332510 жыл бұрын
Gravity didn't have much more substance than the average summer blockbuster, bit this time instead of explosion porn it was cinematography porn. I'm not gonna say it wasn't beautiful, but I'm not gonna say it was an amazing drama either.

This movie is so underrated i loved it though. I can forgive some of the cheesiness and slow mo cause it seems like they actually tried, so much fun to watch.
@Ryanmiller709 жыл бұрын
Really enjoyed the movie. Although, I felt that the slow-mo was used way too much. I didn't mind the first use to see what it's like to use this drug and then when it's used to see bullets go through the bad guys, but other times just seemed pointless and annoying. Like the bathtub scene and the fall at the end just felt like filler to me or like the editor just figured out how to do the slow-mo effect so they wanted to abuse it. Another thing that really bugged me was when Anderson got caught by their prisoner. She's a psychic and she's shown that she can predict someone's move before they make it. How did she get caught? Other than those 2 gripes, I really enjoyed it and would recommend it.

I absolutely hated the 1995 Dredd when it came out. It simply failed on every single level and then some. But the new version? Oh man - what a joy. And a highly underrated movie - it just worked on all levels. Keeping the story simple, the violence, the tone, Dredd never removing his helmet ... everything. Great review and I agree with the 8/10 :-)

The new one is Robocop lite, it half does everything that the original did, and then brings in a fuckton of plot's, then has to quickly and unsatisfyingly resolve them all. The Clarence in the movie, they forget about him for the second quarter of the film, then kill him in an exceptionally unsatisfying way. Robo just shoots him in the dark... And then he's never mentioned again... Then there's the ending... Whatever happened to "I am a Cop" He completely ignores the judicial system and kills Michael Keaton with barely enough evidence to take him to trial, let alone execute him. I mean, Dick Jones admitted that he had killed Bob Morton, that he had hired a known criminal for malicious intent, then held a man at gunpoint. whereas Keatons character (Who is so boring that i can't remember his name) had made reference to the fact that he had tried to kill him... Any half decent lawyer could shoot holes in that story. My problem with this film is that it's not RoboCop, it's RoboUrbanSoldier

What they keep regurgitating is that Dredd never takes the helmet off. WRONG! He does take it off in the comics, but through clever panel positioning and imaginative shadowing effects, we don't get to see his face. And that's what the film did. In the beginning when he suits up, we see the back of his head without the helmet and then putting it on.
@HappyCynic9 жыл бұрын
People get him not taking off the helmet and not seeing his face mixed up. Dredd's whole, unaltered face has never been seen.

To be honest, i expected this film to be bad. At least worse than the original. But after seeing it, i was like: "Wow, it was badass and supercool". The film is actually really good, it's one of those rare cases when remake is even better than the original in some ways. If the original Dredd was a comic-like story for all ages, the new one is actually for more mature audience, and that's what i loved about it. Great film.
@qasperr9949 жыл бұрын
I think this is one of the best films I've seen in like 10 years. The story was in sync with the character a gritty fucking cop doing gritty fucking shit. The violence was on point cause that's what bullets do. And that's what drugged out bitches do. The cinematography was tight as hell and the score was sweet. My only gripe with this movie is that it was only like an hour and a half. But oh well. People can't pay attention that long nowadays anyway I guess so fuck it. This movie was badass definitely own the bluray type shit. Any one who thinks otherwise should go watch The Other Bolyn girl or some other Oscar nominee bullshit. It's not Shakespeare it's fucking Dredd. Hell the fact that they simply called it Dredd was also fucking badass. It's not a remake not a sequel not a prequel just another movie with this character. And a Fuckin sweet movie at that.

Hah, no way bro, Sly was a beast in that role. The 90s version was a classic. Rob Shneider was awful, sure... plus a lot of the other peoples' acting, and certain directing choices.... But Sly Stallone was really fucking great. Court adjourned, bitch.

+Jasper Chisolm Stallone has only ever played one role decently well, Rocky. It's not completely his fault, but that original Dredd was fucking terrible! As others have said, it's likely the reason this movie tanked at the box office.
