Final Word:
It was entertaining from start to finish, but never reaches the levels of the original. The whole project was held back by a lack of Visual Style, Impactful Fight Scenes & Pointless Insulting changes. Despite strong performances from some of the supporting characters (Donald Faison, Jim Carrey, Christopher Mintz-Plasse).

Hit Girl was the best thing about Kick Ass, and the worst thing about Kick Ass 2. Everything that made her amazing in the original was gone in the sequel. Here, she spends the entire movie trying to be a normal girl. I don't feel like the original Hit Girl would bother with that. Suddenly, she was afraid of what people thought of her? I wanted Kick Ass 2, not Mean Girls 2! And Joe is right about the choreography. It feels sloppy, unoriginal, uninspired. The romantic subplots fail miserably, the overuse of "Motherfucker"-inspired childish language reaches laughable (but not out loud) heights, and Kick Ass himself, as well as his team, is just...boring. Jim Carrey is ok, but you never really grow attahed to him like you did Big Daddy. I'm glad people like this movie, but I was so let down by it. I sat through the entire movie with a wrinkled nose, hoping for greatness, but everything felt more like Kick Ass 1/2.

I thought the high school plot was fun and added another layer to the character, it would be boring if she was just a badass superhero all the time, they are adding depth to the character, you should probably stick to more simpleminded superhero movies

I agree with that Statement. Matthew Vaughn should of returned to Direct Kick-Ass 2 (2013). The reason why Kick-Ass 2 bombed as well, was the fact that Internet Trolls leaked the Film before the Theatrical Release and made the Movie lose a good amount of Money at the Box Office.

The only thing I didn't really like about this movie is Hit-Girl dealing with the high school slut bags. It was an interesting scenario to a point, seeing her go from the life that she previously had to that of a normal high school girl, but I just don't think it needed to be extended into a fully developed story arc. Other characters are getting thrown in jail and losing their lives while Mindy is dealing with bullies, she used to kill criminals as a hobby and now she's crying because she got date ditched. I also though the climax of that story arc was dumb, not only was it unfunny and unnecessarily gross, but it didn't really need to culminate into a climax at all. I would've been perfectly happy if she just said fuck it, I don't care about these people and I'm going to become Hit-Girl again. That would've been more satisfying to me, to see her rise above all that shit. Acknowledge the struggles she's going through, and then move on.

@Gasssolo
@Gasssolo 9 жыл бұрын
My problem with the movie was that the cops were so incompetent. Mother Russia taking down 10 cops was really wierd, they would not have arrived by 2 men squads, and the SWAT team would've showed up if they cared to send 10 ppl. After arresting Dave's dad, he died in custody, and Mr. Detective didn't even say sorry or anything (I know not central to the plot but necessary addition); and during the funeral, the "security detail" was a joke, at least one guy should've gone down, it was not realistic at all and so frustrating.

@SpookGod

+Xpertfusion I dunno- the whole premise surrounding Kick-Ass is essentially the consequences of attempting to be a superhero/vigilante in real life. Granted the same doesn't quite apply to the villains, though it might've given Mother Russia even more of an intimidation factor than what she already had if she had taken out an entire SWAT team single-handedly.

The first Kick-Ass was absolutely, mind-blowingly amazing. This one threw away everything that made the first one so unique and ended up being an OK, but completely uninspiring action flick. To be fair, the second comic was way worse than the first and suffered from the same problems so it's not surprising.

So, defending the Nightbitch thing, in the comic, to my knowledge, Dave never got the girl in the first place. In fact, when he came out that he wasn't gay (the very end of the first series of comic books) she flips, tells him he's a creep, and he should fuck off. I need to read the second series of comic books however. They were really good.

The poor direction in this film, I blame on Matthew Vaughn's absence. This only makes me skeptical on how good X-Men: Days of Future Past will be, given it's the sequel to Vaughn's ingenious X-Men: First Class. So lesson to be learned, any sequel to a Matthew Vaughn film not directed by him is destined to fail miserably. Bryan Singer will ruin another X-Men movie. Sigh.
@phzoro371
@phzoro371 10 жыл бұрын
About x-men I wouldn't worry for Vaughn's absence since Singer returned to the helm and he was the director of x-men, X2, and was producer of first class, as you probably already know... I would be worried if Vaughn was replaced by anyone else outside Joss Wheadon and Singer...
@VerneditheSnail

Matej Ivanović X-Men and X2 were terrible films. Yes, Singer produced First Class, but Vaughn was still allowed creative freedom, which is what upped the quality of his film considerably.

Evyatar Weissbrod I saw it 2 days after the premier and agree. It became my favorite in the series, First Class coming second. However everything I hate about Singer was there. Something I loved a lot was Wolverine's full body nude, something Vaughn would never do. Beside the point, unlike First Class this film suffered from Singer's tendency to make things dull. The costumes... they did improve a bit but took several steps back. Glad we didn't have leather, but the future outfits looked unnecessarily busy. Too busy and dull. The lack of colors hurt the 70s, which by contrast should have been brighter and more colorful like Magneto's costume. The one at the end of First Class had its flaws but looked very interesting, like something he would wear in the comics. The make up for Mystique looked terrible. A step down in quality from the original trilogy and First Class. Singer once more insulted Rogue's fandom. Having her cut from the film and still show up in the Empire covers (yeah I saw her in that cameo at the end with Iceman). We've never seen Tank Rogue in the movies... such a missed opportunity! I guarantee had Vaughn been in charge we would have gotten the Rogue everyone wanted to see. And see, that's where Singer's bias in favor of men comes in. I don't know if it's because he's gay or whatever. He gave us an excellent Iceman, complete with ice armor and slide. Why not Rogue too? Rogue is one of Singer's greatest mistakes, why not rectify it? Also, Havok not participating in the climactic 1973 battle against the Sentinel and Magneto was unwise. Imagine how cool it would have been seeing Havok blasting away a Sentinel... and honestly those guys seriously needed his help, Wolverine and Beast fought badly. Matthew Vaughn would have had Havok blasting his way through the stadium. And then there's the worst of all... Cyclops showing up alive at the end almost ruined the movie for me. I hate the character, his relationship with Jean, and I absolutely hate Cable and the Dark Phoenix.

I agree with many points that Joe brought up in this video. Overall, I get the impression that it was either rushed in some way, on a lower budget, or both. If I had to summarize what I felt while watching it, it was like watching a giant plane trying to take off, but only sputtering down the runway and just rolling through the fence before coming to anti-climactic stop in a large field. You think something may happen, either take off or crash, but it ends up just being a dull failure-to-launch. And the stated issues with Hit-Girl are spot-on. In the first, she absolutely stole the show. In this one, the issues she has to deal with just don't make a lot of sense for someone known as "Hit-Girl." She takes on criminals and villains of great danger. Deep inside, however, she's... afraid of what her classmates think of her...? Really? I think that's similar to having Batman become very concerned about why a villain just doesn't seem to like him. Or maybe he suddenly loses his vast amount of wealth and has to scale back the Batmobile to a VW Bug... no. Putting a beloved character into an almost arbitrary plot sequence to try and make people care about them more usually doesn't work. It didn't work here, and it won't work in movies or books of any quality. And to close, the final fight between the factions of heroes and villains left me saying, "It's over already? You're ending it like that? Good luck with that." And the idea of making a third movie is something that always gets old. Everything doesn't need to be a trilogy. More is usually never better than quality.

The ending didnt bother me because it shows that Kick-Ass will finally be a badass. His father dying was necessary in order for him to be brave. Now he has nothing to lose so if theres a Kick-Ass 3, he wont be just some dumb kid just way over his head that gets his ass kicked and needs hit girl to rescue him all the time, hell be that bad ass trained superhero that he always wanted to be, Kicking Ass. The death of John Liguizamos character also mirrors this, since he was like a father to Chris, his death is what triggered Chris to actually be evil and not some crazy rich bitch. And the future of hit girl and Daves romance, Im interested to see what happens. Mindy finally accepts who she is, not a lame high school girl but a real hero.

It wasn't a superior sequel, but definitely a competent one at the least. I agree with most of Joe's points, although I honestly didn't care much about the complaints involving Jim Carrey. He played a good role, that's enough for me. I also 100% second that cutting Katie out in favor of Miranda Swedlow was a big mistake no matter how you slice it. It rendered the change from the comics in the first film of Katie being with Dave totally pointless. They might as well have stuck with the original ending (which was hilarious in my opinion) if they weren't going to continue this alternate version or even have a well thought explanation for doing so. I mean, Katie cheating on Dave and then thinking he has feelings for Mindy because of a pathetically scripted misunderstanding? Really? I just hope they don't pull the same crap with Valerie from Kick Ass 3, which is my personal favorite of the trilogy with the absolute best ending. Please give the KA saga the cinematic finale it deserves if a third film is ever made!

Alright. Joe explains for me why the MF scenes are awesome, as for the rest: Jim Carrey does a surprisingly good job as the Colonel and it was cool seeing Kickass actually train and become a competent fighter. The first film does a great job showing how real heroes would be received in the real world and this one does a masterful job exploring the consequences of being a Superhero and how people you love will get hurt.

I know everyone hated how Hitgirl was portrayed in this film but honestly, I personally think it fits. when she was a kid, she was simply just enjoying herself and as a child, fighting and killing was pretty much all she was taught to know so it was her. Her trying to transition into the life of a normal girl while becoming a teen sorta amplified the awkwardness most people go through during their years as teenagers, trying to find that balance of fitting in with society and just being ourselves. I personally think it worked and I'm sure that's what the film was going for

You know I just watched both movies back to back and I noticed that the second one is actually on par with the first. Its not as bad as some people make it out to be. It has a little more emotion than the first, shows more of the responsibilties and consequences of being a superhero and shows how Kick Ass and Hit Girl mature as both people and superheroes. As for his girlfriend dumping him well thats just how it is in the comics and they prefer making hit girl a future love interest to dave rather than Katie. The action has some shaky cam but it delivers for the most part. Overall I dont think its better than the first but its at the same level. I used to think it was weaker too but watching them back to back its not. The only thing the first had over the second was a little more class. Kick-Ass 2 was a well done faithful comic adaptation and Jeff Wadlow did pretty good with what he had.

Too bad Jim Carrey got offensive with his Liberal views. Refused to promote Kick Ass 2 because of his violence and gun loving character, made the video Cold Dead Hand which I actually found funny in spite of being a gun owner, but then when I read his Twitter comments and seen he was being serious, suddenly it wasn't so funny... he called gun owners "heartless motherfuckers". My childhood hero, a fellow Canadian who, like me, started out dirt poor (I'm still working on that whole 'becoming a millionaire' bit lol), essentially called me a heartless mofo. There's MILLIONS of gun owners in North America, there's more firearms in Canada than you think, and in some cases they're even cheaper than what you'll find in America. Some gun owners actually boycotted Carrey films, at least a couple actually went and burned what DVDs they had of Jim Carrey movies. I didn't go that far, but I refused to see Dumb and Dumber To in spite of having loved the first one in the 90s when I was a little kid. Speaking of which, he initially rejected the movie, didn't want any part of it. After Cold Dead Hands though, he didn't get much work. After Cold Dead Hands, all he got in 2013 was his role in Kick Ass 2, and an uncredited role in Anchor Man 2. In 2014, all he had was Dumb and Dumber To, and that was released so late in the year that I don't think he was doing any work for many months before finally accepting to be in that sequel. As of right now, he apparently isn't scheduled to be in any movie, so the next film he'll have any major role in won't be until, optimistically, perhaps late Summer or Fall. I don't know how many months on average it takes to make a film, but it's certainly quite a few, unless it's INCREDIBLY low budget with little to no special effects. Of course Jim Carrey is going to need more than just a bit of bad mouthing towards gun owners to kill his career. He's basically the God of physical comedy, I can think of nobody else currently alive (closest in the past that comes to mind as far as physical comedy is concerned is perhaps Sir Charles Chaplin) who can go to his extent of faces, voices, and general physic distortion for the sake of a few laughs. Of course Rowan Atkinson is amazing in his own right when it comes to physical comedy, but his is a bit more subtle, more situational. Jim Carrey's is just... insane. Dislocating limbs, distorting his face, pulling off strange voices, sometimes acting literally insane "The pen is blue... the pen is BLUE... THE GOD DAMN PEN IS BLUE!", "I'm kickin my ass, D'YA MIND?!", "My name is Fire Marshall Bill, LEMME SHOW YA SOMETHIN!", "LIKE... A... GLOVE!" and of course "Oooooooo, somebody STOP me!" None the less, I think his outwardly Liberal take on gun owners has hurt his career to a degree. It CERTAINLY didn't help it. I have no doubt that Dumb and Dumber To lost a lot of ticket sales due to his stance again firearms. It still made over twice as much as it cost to film it, however I think if his image hadn't have been tarnished, it would have made even more.

I always find it weird that people are so protective over their guns and take the slightest insults as serious things, to be fair. boycotting a career over a statement on an issue that... Doesn't affect your life much at all is weird though.

hhhat09 The privilege to own firearms is a fragile one. As you can see in America, even if it's a right, it can still be meddled with. That's why gun owners are defensive against those who wish to take firearms away, get more firearm laws into play that won't serve to protect anyone but criminals, or restrict our ability to get cool and new designs. Jim Carrey insulted gun owners with both a video, and with personal comments on the internet. His views are clear on the matter. How would you like it if someone came out and said that videogames are full of savagery, that they promote violence, and is the reason for school shootings. What if Johnny Depp came out tomorrow, collaborated with some musicians who had a song talking about how all gamers are obese virgins who are out of shape, who will prematurely ejaculate on merely being touched by a girl, and who will literally drool and potentially start masturbating on the sight of a girl playing videogames? Not only that, but he then posted comments on Twitter saying that gamers are "pathetic little fuckers who can't hack it in real life, so they compensate by playing games in virtual worlds where they're not actually useless." This shows that the video wasn't just a joke, but a serious jab at gamers, a group of people whom Depp, in this hypothetical situation, has an actual disgust and hate for. How about another point of view; do you enjoy reading? Cameron Diaz (hypothetically of course) portrays herself as a bespectacled nerd with bad teeth, no social skills, greasy hair, a fedora, hipster clothing, and won't talk about her tastes in books because 'you probably never heard of it'. Then comments on how pathetic it is that people still read books, an outdated medium that's only chosen to try and make the reader look 'classy', when all it really does is make you look like a pompous ass. Just get a kindle, you pathetic nerds! Of course these aren't my views; I've been a gamer for a couple decades now, I very much enjoy reading though I don't own a kindle, and of course, I'm a proud gun owner. I'm simply giving different points of view; ways to understand why it is that many gun owners are not pleased with Jim Carrey's opinion on us, and so have stopped buying tickets to his films, or spending money on his DVDs. Often times, firearms aren't just a simple possession, but a major hobby in our lives. Something that takes up a lot of our free time in shooting/maintaining our firearms, as well as seeing what ones are for sale, learning of new designs, perhaps buying more, or selling some that have become safe queens. Gun owners, book worms, hardcore gamers, movie buffs, connoisseurs of different types of alcohol, people like Dennis Leary who LOVE to smoke tobacco, stoners who identify themselves as such and accept the stoner culture, or even people who have a passion for airsoft or paintball. These are different hobbyists, if I'm using that word correctly. People who are passionate about something, and spend both a lot of time and a lot of money on these passtimes that are important in their lives. Of course there's some pople who only one one or two firearms for just self defense, some people who only read on the rare occasion, casual gamers, etc. Not EVERYONE who likes these things are borderline obsessed over them, I'm simply saying that those who ARE passionate about their hobby, will not wish to support those why mock them. Who call them "heartless motherfuckers", and even suggest that we put children in danger. Now do you understand? Not so weird, is it...

NormanMatchem I don't think I care much for the opinions of random people who have no relation to me. They're important in terms of entertainment, but who they are on screen and IRL are seperate and I base my likes and dislikes based on that. I guess I'd just say "owie" if they said those things? They're big players in the world but they're far from political and pose no threat... They're just brash. I do understand now to a degree. I still hold my original opinion... In that... Now I think a lot of people need to learn how to handle the opinions of strangers better. ^^; Though if it's really so integral to their lives, sure.

NormanMatchem Support... You do realize that actors are paid the majority of their pay during the filming of a movie, correct? They receive royalties as well, but the meat comes from the contract - the filming stage. If anything these boycotts just hurt studios as a whole moreso than the actor, I'm pretty sure he doesn't need support anymore to retain his retirement fund. If it did as much as it's sentiment implies, then yeah, the boycotts would be a pretty nice way of protest since - again - you and others are really into it.

hhhat09 If their film does negatively, it doesn't look particularly good on the actors, does it? If Carrey's films start to bring in less money there will be less incentive to hire him, and when he DOES get hired, he won't be paid as much in anticipation for the little amount of money that the film will get through ticket sales/merchandising/DVD sales, etc.

SPOT ON review, just rented it and yes this is exactly what i thought, and I think it was the back story that Big daddy had during the comic scene they explained what happened, why he was training his daughter to be a "hit girl" That back story part gave the first movie its foundation. But sometime a mid level second act helps make a better 3rd act so lets see if there is 3rd movie the change in girl friends usual is because she is a actress that would work cheaper, they did it to Iron mans side kick! And thats why Tobey is no longer spiderman

No he didn't after the third movie he was in he said he wanted to be included in the next one but he knew at that time Sony didn't like the way the movie was made Now I have to admit there were a lot of thing i didnt like about the first 3, and to me a lot seemed very cartoon looking but CGI technology is a cartoon just drawn on a computer screen instead of paper. To me the problem is the constant revamping and greed of the "new Hollywood" who seems not to care how the fans feel about how a star has done in movie roll, that to us if you replace the main person as the star the movie looses what ever it was we liked about it. So my way of showing my disapproval is just not going and speaking out about it, the movies have become far to expensive to just go because they tell us too, they need to earn our money they need to entertain us and make a movie right, and quit milking things, like the Hobbit triligy (really did this need to be 3 movies?) So when they want my money they better give me something for it and not swap out actors to save them a buck or two, i say pay the actors what they ask for, they will get it back in ticket sales!

Stricken 7th That's the thing about sequels: Rarely are they able to outdo the first one. They just can't live up to the hype. Quite a few HAVE managed that feat., but it it's really difficult to capture that same magic a second time. A lot of the time, sequels either follow the same formula and suffer from being too predictable, or they try something new that deviates from audiences' expectations. I think the problem is more-so the audience than the sequels themselves. Audiences go the extreme a lot of the time and give movies a reputation for being worse than they really are. You have to go into a movies with the right mind-set. In the case of sequels, you have to go into it expecting an inferior film (although it could surprise you and be superior)

Editing and overuse of shaky cam helped to fuck up the fight scenes. The stupid use of cheap humor (i.e. 'Sick Stick') and effects helped to fuck up the rest of this cartoon of a sequel. They needlessly killed off everything that could have saved this production: Killing off Colonel Stars and Stripes (which didn't even contribute to any plot) wasn't even the first major error. They failed to use Javier & Ralph D'Amico to thicken a more unpredictable plot and didn't think to use 'Justice Forever' as a means for Hit Girl to rediscover her true destiny. Along side Hit Girl, 'Justice Forever', Kick Ass and Colonel S&S could have made for a pretty ultimate force to substute the lost of Big Daddy in Hit Girl's life and spread the pursuit of heroism & etc. But then anything could have save this movie. As it stands, it's just yet another linear, single minded cash grab. How does Wadlow qualify for this production, and why did Vaughn just hand it over to him?

In my opinion I don't really mind the end interaction between Kickass and Hitgirl all that much, but they didn't have much build up for that scene so it didn't make much sense. But then like that one scene *SPOILERS SPOILERS maybe* when hitgirl first hangs out with those teenage girls and they show her a music video with hot guys, and hitgirl is like turned on by how built and hot those guys were. That was a bit of a weird scene and could've been a bit more suggestive instead of just outwardly showing it. Idk

Ikr, I suppose it was there for comedy purposes but it seemed more like a parody than anything else. I personally found that scene ridicously exaggerated and totally unnecessary. It also kinda ruined hit girls role imo

okay i agree with the saving dave fight was much weaker in the 2nd movie then in the first but you have to remember that fight in the first one was her iconic entrance, plus the fights afterwards held up pretty well in comparison and dont you even think about dissing the fight with Hit girl vs Mother russia because that was fucking beautiful and THAT one liner was pure gold

I would say it's a 7/10, I honestly didn't expect the movie to be as raw as the comic book because some of the most controversial moments seemed unnecesary. I think the movie does a good job adapting stuff that didn't quite made sense in the graphic novel, like the fact that HG doesn't seems to grow up or the fact that she get arrested, the evil dog decapitation scene. And the funny moments in it are good enough to make it definetly worth the watch.

Hitgirl's one liners are not as edgy because her guardian does not like her cussing and makes her put money into a jar every time she does.

The pacing in this film was bad. Plus they took far too many narrative leaps to get where they wanted to be. It left the film feeling disjointed and rushed. This film was like a fast food version, where as the first film was a 4 course meal.

I saw kick ass 1 and 2 back to back yesterday for first time. Never heard before about it!!! I know, I know. Anyway. I found kickass 2 having more drama, action and comedy than the first. The action sequences of kick ass 2 are also more difficult to perform, more breath-taking, more impressive, more unpredictable. Mother Russia Vs the cops was an awesome scene. The final message/epilogue was better too. Kickass 1 felt like watching a parody (which it is meant to be parody) and apart from the nice fighting scenes of Chloe it didn't catch my breath as much as kickass 2 did. I agree with all the negative points you raise about KA2 but without having any nostalgia factor as I watched both movies on the same day my own verdict it that kick-ass 2 is slightly better than kick-ass 1 or at least on the same level.

I think essentially boiling down Hit-Girl was one of the worst mistakes about Kick-Ass 2. Like even though she's still badass in her own way as always by the end, the teen drama shit was beyond unnecessary especially with the new story stuff they came up with just for the movie. It was frustrating because it just kept reminding me of what Mark Miller himself said once about her in that he was originally trying to write a Hit-Girl series and realised a few issues in that he'd made her too competent and there was no real stakes against her, that's when he came up with Dave Lizewski and decided to tell his story featuring Hit-Girl instead. Even went so far as to say it would've been like watching Star Wars from Han Solo's perspective, there'd be no drama. I really couldn't take Hit-Girl seriously enough in KA2 because of how well she stole the show when she popped up all of a sudden in the first movie, in this one it's not nearly as impactful because she betrayed her own character that hard.
