6:50 Learn more about zinc!
Let’s talk about the dark side of zinc. Zinc is one of the most important trace minerals for your hair. But having too much zinc can be just as damaging to your hair as zinc deficiency.
Zinc is a trace mineral, and it’s involved in over 300 different enzymes. Zinc is needed to support the growth of hair follicles. With low zinc, you could experience hair loss.
Zinc is also needed for collagen and keratin. If you're deficient in zinc, you could notice thin and brittle hair.
Having too much zinc can lead to copper deficiency. The more zinc you take, the more copper you need. Copper is also involved in hair growth, hair color, and the structural integrity of the hair.
The most zinc an adult could take without experiencing any side effects is roughly about 40 mg per day.
Symptoms of zinc toxicity can include:
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Decreased appetite
• Abdominal cramps
• Diarrhea
• Headaches
But, you may need even higher amounts of zinc short-term for certain health problems. The key is to make sure you always consume enough copper as well. The correct zinc-to-copper ratio is roughly ten to one.
It’s important to remember that when you consume foods high in zinc, your body only absorbs 20 to 40 percent of it. There are a lot of various things that decrease the absorption of zinc.
It’s important to avoid things that prevent the absorption of zinc and consume foods high in zinc. You may also want to consider a zinc supplement as well as make sure you're getting plenty of copper.

Let me start by saying 😩 and then end by saying 😩… in other words… 😩 I have a bin FULL of expensive vitamins. Take this, take that, don’t take too much or it will be toxic, etc. Eat this, don’t eat that. It’s overwhelming. My grandma lived till she was 97, ate whatever she wanted, and to my knowledge took zero vitamins. Seems we live in a perpetual state of anxiety and pill popping out of desperation to live longer and “feel” better. Is it working? 😢

As a male mid 50s I’m not sure why my hair is still full and no receding & not brittle. My father had same. Yes my hair is pepper & Salt color. Possibly because i grew up my diet has been consistently mediterranean west Asian background. I really don’t take supplements. In the sunshine 🌞 i feel wonderful. Vitamin D stores well. I personally don’t use sunscreen lotions. There is a reason why i don’t. My skin needs to be free of toxic chemicals particularly aluminum in lotions. Usually i will grab a Lebanese cucumber as an in between snack. I might eat 1-2 cucumbers a day plus with main meals. Lots of virgin olive oil each day and chickpeas and lentils. I do understand we are all different and react differently to different foods and methods.

Hi Dr. Berg! First of all, I wanted to thank you for your wonderful videos and your effort! I'm grateful more than I can express with words, because thanks to you has my quality of life had greatly improved, and that of my mother too. My mother is around 70 years old and she suffers from high blood pressure and other symptoms. She'd had no energy and had to take large doses of medication. Thanks to your advice she had been able to reduce her medication, has so much more energy and was able to supplement some meds with alternative options! Her blood pressure is still a problem, though it's her life long battle and even the current success is a major thing to her! As for me, I feel so much better since I follow your advice! I also have some questions / suggestions for future videos (if I may be so bold, lol). And excuse me kindly for any grammar mistakes, English is not my first language. 1. I'd really fascinated with the concept of fasting. I do omad but I'd really love to do long term fasts. Though I'd managed about 75 hours at most. I start to feel dizzy and weak. I do the sodium, electrolytes, potassium and fish oil as well as MCT oil, but I just can't go for longer than that. One explanation that comes to mind is my low blood pressure. When I fast it sinks lower and that is why I feel week. Is that possible? I drink more coffee than usual but it still doesn't help that much.:-( 2. Another thing that bothers me are night shifts. I'm used to the pattern of doing 2x 12 hours day shifts followed by the same number of night shifts and then time off. That way, I do cca 7x 12 hours day shifts and 7x 12 hour night shifts per month. Is it really bad? How can I minimize the risks? What are the risks exactly? I'm really struggling with that. This pattern of work suits me but I don't want to damage my body. I would love a video adressing all those points from you! I've watched your videos concerning night shifts, but I still feel that I need more info. :-) Thank you so much, Dr. Berg! You are wonderful person.

🌀It is important to take the correct amount of Zinc & Copper so that hormones remain balanced & they are also very important for growth of hair follicles. With insufficient amounts of hair vitamins, there will be no creation of new blood vessels which in turn causes damage to scalp & inhibits hair growth. 👉Based on being in good health, ZINC to COPPER RATIO is roughly 10-1 as recommended at 5:18 of this Video.

I’m a woman who’s been taking zinc on and off since I was 19. I’m in my 30s now. I started taking it to control my cystic acne and help them heal with minimal scarring. The side-effect I got is very thick lustrous hair and my eyelashes are long. I take 25mg-30mg zinc a day with vitamin C (sodium ascorbate) on an empty stomach. I started supplementing on copper too (just not at the same time). When I go off zinc supplements for more than a month, my adult acne returns (the painful cystic variety). I still get the occasional acne breakout even on zinc, but just one or two small ones that heal quickly. I love my zinc supplements, I’ve never had to take antibiotics or use any harsh skin treatments for my acne.

💡 Recommended upper tolerance for zinc is around 40 mg/day for adults, but circumstances like autoimmune diseases may require more. 💡 Absorption factors include gut inflammation, stress, high-carb diets, phytic acid, and estrogen dominance (birth control, HRT). 💡 Maintaining a balanced zinc-to-copper ratio (around 10:1) can help prevent adverse effects from high zinc intake. 💡 Zinc deficiency is common; adding zinc-rich foods and managing absorption barriers can contribute to healthier hair.

For better absorption and delivery, you can make a LYPOSOM by mixing Sunflower lasathin or coconut oil in worm water combined with copper, zinc, and glycerin. The fat will protect the minerals, and the glycerin will help prevent the minerals from leaking out of the fat cells. this will allow for a much smaller dose because instead of a 30% absorption, it will be closer to 80%.

the thing is, that everybody is individual and need different things, and I'm sure he would've said that the most important thing is to stick to a healthy keto diet full of natural minerals, vitamins, fatty omega 3 acids, fiber, plus fasting and being active physically and absorbing vitamin d from the sun.. but again everyone has different needs , it depends how you absorb all of that too. for example of course globally you can drink coconut water for electrolytes, but if you eat enough vegetables you should get it from them

I think this would be impossible. Apart from not knowing everyone's medical history, there are, as he said, supplements of inferior quality. To steer people away from one product then recommend another by name would be advertising. I'm pretty sure that's against KZbin guidelines. It could also initiate a lawsuit from the named & shamed company.. He didn't get to be so clever by being by being stupid!

Well, infact Dr. Berg did answer this slightly on a Q&A live once He said Cod liver oil Vitamin D3 and K2 Zinc, Potassium and Magnesium. I believe these are basic ones he mentioned everybody should take regularly. I mean so to say it's impossible is a Stretch. Obviously if your a person that has gallbladder problems then you take a pill for that. You have issues with constipation you again add addional remedy. After all, he did heart the comment so he knows its possible.

The fine doctor doesn't talk about it but there is a thunderous difference between the amount of zinc in pure zinc ("elemental") and the zinc you probably see on the shelf, whose fine print commonly explains is zinc gluconate or sulfate. Those are diluted. Mainstream sources say the upper limit is 40 but that is for elemental zinc. Gluconate and sulfate recommended limits and RDAs are several times higher. 200 mg gluconate might be fine and safely tolerable. 200 mg elemental is in my opinion an invitation for a duodenal ulcer.

Dr. Berg. Thank you for the video. I have an auto immune disorder and I'm not able to eat much. I have a vitamin and mineral deficiency due to this. What type of doctor do I need to see to get a full vitamin and mineral profile done. I'm losing muscle and hair. I'm also deficient in Potassium and magnesium, but I don't know what kind of doctor to go to to in order to get a full panel and prescription of how much of each vitamin and mineral I actually need. I appreciate any suggestions. I have no energy, less hair, and losing weight. However my auto immune disorder is controlled at this time.

I lost nearly all my hair last year, doctors don’t know the cause. But I started taking daily 50 mg of zinc with vitamin D during Covid. Probably too much. Maybe this is the answer, a copper deficiency. I stopped taking so much zinc and started on oral minoxidil. In eight months, I’ve almost gotten all of my hair back plus thicker, new hair. Thanks, Dr. Berg for the insight.

Taking vitamin D in isolation, especially high doses will increase calcium, lower potassium & increase Magnesium burn rate. You would need more magnesium, potassium, and possibly sodium to keep calcium from precipitating into soft tissue like the scalp. Vitamin K2 will further assist Ca utilization to make sure it goes where it's supposed to. Too much zinc can definitely lower copper which will can also contribute to scalp/hair issues. Difficult to know what's going on though without a properly interpreted HTMA (hair tissue mineral analysis). The one many practitioners use when attempting to balance patients minerals is TEI Labs

@akudar
@akudar 8 ай бұрын
@@joanneclark8256 Most doctors won't, and the ones that do likely dont know how to properly interpret them because levels are often not taken at face value. For instance, ones heavy metal load may look low, but if the Na/K ratio is too low it's likely because the person lacks the cellular energy to expel the metal from intracellular or enzyme lock-up so it wouldnt show. However, when given the correct minerals/supplements to raise the Na/K then you start seeing those metals finally come out which registers as a temporary "increase" on a subsequent test. That's just one example. TEI is the only one I recommend because they dont mess with the hair sample prior to running through a mass spectrometer, so the readings are more accurate

I'd say 30mg as the upper limit if you are taking Zinc Picolinate which is the best absorbed form of Zinc that is the most bioavailable on a hair test and blood test compared to other forms of Zinc. If you take too much Zinc and feel bad, you might be dumping a lot of bile and detoxing since Zinc is required for LIver detox

Question and Suggestion: Hello Dr. Berg. Remember, you can take 150-400 mg of zinc gluconate per day. The bottle I have is 50 mg zinc gluconate. It says take 1 per day, but the body can take up to 400 mg of zinc gluconate. There are several different forms of zinc you can find or get so be very careful what type it is and read about it. Zinc oxide is another, but this you would probably stay under 100 mg per day at maximum. The bottle can be misleading because it says take 1 per day, but with gluconate its not enough. Correct me if I'm wrong but I have read this somewhere. Hope this helps someone out. By the way, I believe zinc has helped me regrow some receded hair in the front and sides area but I still have a really full head of hair regardless. I will now try copper and see what happens. I think it receded not only from being unhealthy for years in my early 20's but also from wearing a hockey helmet so often and the sweat and rubbing. Because the hairline is sort of where the helmet was rubbing. LOL!

Just my personal experience I need to take more zinc than what is the upper tolerance, in order to see any benefits from it. I don't have any of the ailments he described in this video but all the effects noted from proper zinc levels only seem to be prevalent in me when I take ~100mg/day of zinc. Sometimes 150 mg. I would say if you can take higher amounts without any side effects of too much, you should be OK. Of course don't go overboard and take as much as you can until you feel nauseous, headaches, etc. keep it reasonable.

Hi Dr. Berg. My wife has very high levels of zinc. Her supplements are only magnesium and vitamin D w/ K. We tested our water and it was very low for zinc. She's not taking any collagen supplements either. What can we do to get it down? I had her increase magnesium to block absorption. And I had her greatly increase her raw vegetables for the flavonoids to bind with it to get it out of her system. Is there anything else we can do? It's extremely concerning.

there may be some confusion between the inflammatory response to having a foreign object, of whatever material lodged in the uterus and the toxic potential of the tiny amount of copper leaching into the bloodstream from an IUD, especially given that copper deficiency is more likely than toxicity unless someone eats a LOT of liver (the only food source of note where copper levels are significant and typically higher than zinc). I gave myself a copper deficiency taking fairly low amounts of zinc (average of 25mg/day) as a 190lb man, 100mg/day seems very dangerous except in a very short term case of illness, in which case the body would also benefit from the immune and energy boosting effects of copper at least as much as zinc.
