Something to note: Not every tip will resonate with everyone. This is more of a broad strokes video covering the whole category of Fantasy inspired fashion so obviously you can customize this to your liking. Take what resonates and leave the rest. Just because you wouldn’t wear it, doesn’t mean someone else won’t love it. Also: this isn’t reserved for men but anyone who dresses more masculine. If you’re somewhere in-between, check out the video I made before if you haven’t already seen it. You might be able to merge tips and ideas.

Totally 💯 there with you on the hats 🎩👒🧢 Not to boast but the thrift Gods have recently blessed me by spending handmade bonnets in all sorts of funky patterns my way. I legit bought out most of one person’s DIY funky hat collection that they had donated to a thrift store . Gladly, put down my money 💴 🥳

Thank you for this! I’m a trans masc person and really appreciate the fantasy masc inspiration! If it’s okay, I have a tip for altering women’s plus size shirts and waistcoats if you’re some with a flat chest or some who binds: Most plus size women’s tops include extra fabric around the chest to accommodate larger busts, which you may want to remove for a more tailored look. I personally like to look for items with vertical darts or “princess” seams, as they tend to be easier to remove excess fabric from. Horizontal side darts, on the other hand, are harder to alter and can sit awkwardly on flatter chests. Alternatively, tops made from stretch/knit fabrics don’t typically have this issue, so sweater vests and knitwear can be good options if tailoring seems intimidating.

Could be interesting to see you style your husband (maybe with accessories that you would still wear if he hates them) and maybe in comparison either how you'd do a similar thing in a more feminine way, or just the more masculine end of your own style.
@DressMeUpScotty2 ай бұрын
Yeah that’s a good idea. I think I might shop for both of us and style outfits for us both (but make sure to showcase him equally or more) - and finding accessories we can both utilize 👌

I feel like steampunk is also an area of fantasy fashion that I see more masculine fashion in. Just like, top hats and cravats, goggles and outlandish gadgetry. I mean, I guess steampunk is sometimes viewed as scifi but it seems largely fantasy to me idk For medieval fantasy, I think the right kind of belts (like ring belts) and belt pouches can go a long way. A keyhole neckline (esp. with trim or embroidered details) or a pirate shirt are also gonna immediately give fantasy vibes. I'm not sure why, but I also get fantasy from fingerless gloves? And drapey hoods and other outerwear.
@DressMeUpScotty2 ай бұрын
Oh yeah there’s definitely a lot of cross over with the different categories, including steampunk and sci-fi. I think steampunk is the most approachable of the aesthetics because there’s a lot more examples for masculine styles. And all good additions! Hooded cardigans with the drapey lapel are always a mood, a good casual alternative to a cloak 🙌

I'd recommend to look at Larpers outfits, for example photos and videos from the both biggest events (Conquest of Mythodea and Drachenfest). The historical range goes from caveman to victorian (=often steampunk inspired) and every time period and fantasy genre in between of course. On the arriving days, before the games begin, there are many people with an eclectic look of jeans and t-shirts, but with cloaks, belt bags, funky hats etc. One thing I also love is doing historical silhouette but with modern fabrics/patterns and vice versa.

Super stoked to see this video from you, my go-to fantasy outfit/ cosplay gal content creator. It fits right in line with the shift my style is taking this late fall/ early Winter. Personally I have worn skirts & dresses constantly for over a year. Ultra fancy aesthetic. Not very practical & wearable. Really I’m not buying very many dresses or skirts or ultra femme tops right now. I pretty much already have it. I just need to see what fits. (I’ve gone from plus to standard size 👍& I’ve got to see what I can size down & what I would be better off selling & buying one in my size if it’s that important to me) Now I’m adopting a more androgynous & functional (easy to do outdoor activities in) style . And for Heaven’s sake I want to stay warm this season. Fantasy & cosplay elements are always welcome. I love your style 😽

I love the concept and am thankful for all the broad-strokes advice, but is there any chance you could provide some more examples, inspiration, or just plain more information on how to fit this to a body that is constructed in a broader/more masculine shape? It seems like all I can find is inspiration on thin, waif-ish frames that are much closer to androgynous/feminine builds than my own build. While I know a lot of the same basic principles apply, (like layering, and varying fabric textures) what works well on those body types is very rarely what works for someone who is broad-shouldered, barrel-chested, and generally stocky in build like me (regardless of weight, even). And honestly, I have no idea what I'm doing, nobody ever taught me the first thing about style and I don't have a natural talent for it

Styling videos are overwhelmingly geared towards women, and the rest is very “how to dress smart and BE A REAL MALE” … so thank you for this. My advice : on top of everything else, look at actual historical fashion. There are sooooo many cool details that are not necessarily hard to recreate but that we don’t find on modern garments. Embroidered neckline and cuffs for example, it’s doesn’t have to be fancy embroidery, it can be just 3 lines of running stitch, or couched thread… but it will give the little touch that changes everything. Look at viking/medieval european garments in books and museum collections! Look at garments recreated by historians ! Historical clothes were waaaayyyy more embellished and detailed than our modern clothes, even for lower class people. Your dress was your pride, only the absolute poorest wore rags. So ! Embroidery! Interesting buttons ! LACE even for men ! Rich textures ! Wide array of weaves ! Colours ! (the past was not brown and grey) Also ! TRIMS !!! It’s even easier than embroidery ! You can find incredible antique pieces in yard sales and thrift shops, or buy historical inspired ones online (tablet woven trims and belts are so lovely). You can even weave/braid them yourself if you so fancy. My absolute favourite historical detail is smocking the gathers on top of ample sleeves … but it’s quite hard to do on an already assembled shirt. You can do smocking on the cuffs of sleeves that are too large though !)

I've been meaning to go hunting for some good cargo pants for literal years, and this might push me over into doing it. Though I'll definitely have more luck in the masc section for those - I'm hoping that they'll eventually be coming back into style for femmes as well. A big accessory I tend to go for, especially as it gets colder, is a scarf - there are SO MANY different options, and if you're feeling alt and you have one long enough you can use it in lieu of a belt. I definitely want to keep an eye out for good brown leather boots - I've been halfassedly looking on the marketplace, but I'm going to get more serious about it. Thanks for this video! It's sparking ideas lol

I feel ya. I know sometimes I’ve felt like an outfit was wearing me . Particularly if I was a tiny bit self-conscious that day. It’s you want for yourself that’s important (as long as it doesn’t hurt anyone-which I don’t see how what we’re discussing could possibly) Maybe if you are uncomfortable dressing like that full-on in public just take gradual steps. One wear element at a time maybe? Or dress up at home like that just because it’s Tuesday (or whatever day.). Take a pic for yourself. (Not every killer pic needs to be posted online- but that’s neither here or there. ) Just have fun expressing your personality & creativity however it feels authentic You got this! 🤗
