I got really annoyed with that as well. Ellen must be under the belief that like English, other languages are the same. So a question that is short is also short in another language when that isn't the case at all. I don't understand the language that the Chinese boy and his translator speaks, but I do speak French and English and those two languages are not the same at all. A question that is asked in English may be longer or even shorter in French depending on word usage or how French likes to shorten some of the questions or depending on how you want to ask your question. It's not only embarrassing for the translator, but incredibly embarrassing for Ellen. It shows just how ignorant she is.

Xochilt Aviles yup exactly! and chinese is even harder to translate from/into english. being such a privileged white woman with a massive platform she should use it for good rather than to make a joke out of ignorance towards other languages and cultures. the fact that she can't wait 30 seconds for someone to translate something she doesn't understand and instead tries to make fun of it is such a waste of a huge platform. it's also just completely ignorant. from what i understand you're fluent in at least 3 languages, and that's an amazing skill. for the translator to be fluent in a chinese language and english is also an amazing skill, and they're just trying to do their job. it's only human to trip up on translating something, i know from experience, because like you said half the time the words dont even translate properly. chinese and english are on like opposite ends of the spectrum too. it's hard enough translating those two, but also to be put on the spot, hurried and pretty much made fun of on national television? i cannot believe how privileged ellen thinks she is to be so ignorant to that she acts like that when she can only speak english.

Ugh the situation with the artwork really rubbed me wrong...my senior year of high school I painted something for a teacher who was really a positive influence on my life. In his classroom he had gifts from other students already, and my thought process was like 'well, he doesn't have to hang this up, I just want to let him know I appreciate him.' I gave it to him before winter break and he said he loved it. I got a hug. I felt satisfied that I'd done something for a person I looked up to. For all I know, he could have been lying about liking the painting, and that would be totally fine as long as he keeps it to himself. What matters is that he never took my artwork, showed it to the class and went 'how lame is this? It looks bad! c'mon, agree with me!' I think rejection like that would have destroyed me emotionally lol. I really hope the fan who made the painting didn't see that episode, or at least that it didn't bother them. That's such a mean thing to do, especially on live TV :(

Regardless, she was done by the time Ellen rudely interrupted her, and her translation was accurate. Regarding translations, due to differences in language structure, sometime a short sentence in one language can be long in another one (I'm fluent in 3 languages). For example, Chinese does not have verb tense, the time is situational. Therefore, you have to be specific regarding the time if you want to make the sentence clear. Instead of saying "you played the ukulele and now you play the guitar, what else do you want to learn", you have to say "in the past you played the ukulele, and now you play the guitar, what else do you want to learn in the future". Hence how it takes longer to say certain things.

As an art historian and artist, i can tell there was a deep amount of love and time baked into that image. Someone painstakingly shaded their faces, looked intensely at their references, and tried their best just to make their heroes happy, just to make them feel idolozed and loved. Even the basic form of the portrait is so lovingly created! And then, she just shits all over it on stage, in front of a global audience. That kind of shit can make someone stop painting entirely, stop improving their craft, stop doing what they love, out of shame. Fuck ellen's response.

kittypie - One of my dear friends got pregnant with her second child, was very excited and told everyone, and then miscarried in her 2nd-3rd month. So with her third child, she didn't tell anyone besides a couple close friends, and some family, until her 4th month. I watched my own mother go through 4 miscarriages, each time she lost the child in the first couple months. Miscarriages aren't at all uncommon, especially with women 30+, specifically in the first trimester. So lots of women don't say anything until their second trimester. To force someone into announcing it is just despicable and heartless.

I’m not fluent in Chinese but I’m familiar with the structure and some words. Here’s why what Ellen did was especially messed up. The translator was starting with the first question since the second one was a follow-up to it. That meant repeating the names of the instruments, which are western, so the translation involves a sound-for-sound deconstruction that can lengthen certain syllables. Additionally, the second question is also more complex than in english-the structure is “subject preposition verb” so it would have the same conciseness of “you additionally would like to learn what?” Put that together and it sounds long because of all the sounds she’s making, but it’s really just a simple translation. What a jerk.

The thing about that painting is A, you can tell *who* it’s supposed to be and that is a LOT harder than it sounds. B, the proportions are mostly really good. Sure some of it falls in between correct and completely wrong. C. The colours, for the most part, are spot on. They might have used a bit too much orange and maybe they weren’t entirely experienced with shading, but it was *good* And finally, D. It is so, so clear that whoever made that put so much effort and time into it. It isn’t like this is a five minute pencil sketch (which might be the best sketch in the world who knows), this was *paint* which takes time to dry and layer and even plan out. It’s not perfect- it feels a bit uncanny valley like- but it’s clearly made by someone who’s learning and they are clearly on the right track.

Doing any kind of portraiture is extremely difficult but that painting was for sure a really great start. As you said you can tell the artist poured their heart into it and sure it's somewhat off in a couple areas but there was effort and passion. It's not bad!! And that's no reason to insult them on tv! If someone is a big enough fan of Ellen to paint that they are most definitely watching that episode

Like here's the thing too. This artist struggles with proportions a bit which can be pretty quickly fixed just by gridding (the nose at least to me indicates that this was done freehand which is a thing that, as someone who has worked in a gallery, I will say some professional artists straight-up can't do). The colors are a bit off, but they definitely nailed the values which makes the colors look more accurate and from what I've seen students tend to struggle more with value than color so that's really impressive especially if I'm right about this artist being 14-16.

As a GenZer I never realized she was supposed to be the “be kind lady”......I thought she was just like supposed to be “kinda mean and prank everyone and ask the uncomfortable questions while stealing people content and not giving them credit” lady

Dude I'm a late generation Millennial/ on the precipice of GenZ, and even in her "heyday," I NEVER got what people saw in her. She always came off to me as mean and making fun of other people's shortcomings/fears, which is rich, coming from her. >_>

@@NotAFanOfHandles Seriously though- even my Mom, who's obviously a target 'boomer' demographic, always thought she was rude and not particularly funny.. I think it's probably because Ellen targets the lowest common denominator in terms of "hurr-hurr" point-and-laugh audience participation, paired with a condescending attitude. It's not even deadpan, because that would poke fun at some people's biggest ego trip moments. Like, for example, with Mariah Carey, you can poke fun at her documented diva behaviour, because you're punching up, and it's no skin off her behind. But even for someone like Mariah Carey, which none of us can really relate to, she weirdly punches down to something very personal and private, like her personal pregnancy journey, tries to make her drink to weasel it out of her, and then Mariah miscarries a week later. I don't care if she's a millionaire/billionaire- lots of women don't mention their pregnancy early because they're worried about miscarriages, especially if they're particularly vulnerable to them (which I think I read somewhere Mariah was- hence the not wanting to mention it). It's just gross all around. (Not to mention all this B.S. is doubled-down when she tries to swill literal clothing with hearts and the words 'love' on it at Walmart. Double-barf.) In short, A) I didn't know I had so many feelings about Ellen, and B ), I fully support someone like Keanu to replace Ellen, who has a proven track record of being a sweetheart of a guy and someone who genuinely believes in love and excellence

watching this again really makes me think of the mr. beast situation. his videos have essentially become about exploiting people, making them jump through hoops for cash, while pretending it’s all for a good cause. he could just help them without turning them into his circus performers. but most of us ignored that and just labeled him a compassionate guy. now, with all this stuff coming out about him (like with Ellen), it’s like, yeah, the red flags were really there all along, but damn.
