Turned out great Teal, and I didn't expect the art. Just wondering if anyone ever installs air/water separators into the vent lines? I only ask because I've seen people in humid climates like Sailing Catalpa recently, that grow diesel bug in their tanks that then repeatedly clogs filters and fuel systems even after they've filtered the fuel entering. For the same reason I'd also want to run a diesel polisher after every refueling.
@patch84626 жыл бұрын
Hi Teal, just a thought here on the vent tubing. Because you mentioned draining, that tubing as is could and would likely drain in both directions. We would usually calculate 1/4" grade per foot but on a sailing platform I would thing a dead rise after the vent would be best. Anyways just a shared thought. Patch

Teal, you do great work. Wondering we you didn't close out you core for the diesel fills.
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
I did fill the core only because I had a bit of thickened epoxy left over even though it really isn't necessary. The hull material is NidaCore which is a closed cell product so any moisture introduced can't travel more than the distance of 1 cell or about 1/4". I have pulled old fittings off that had 20 year old standing seawater in them with zero degradation...I am sold on NidaCore! I do fill the core edge where strength or aesthetics are a factor.

Hi Crew, Greetings from the UK🇬🇧 again, I just got back from shopping and while unloading the notification bell sounded to my delight ,the shopping can wait!Teal you make things look so easy and I've said before your attention to detail is beyond approach and your vessel when finished will be better than a new one have you ever thought of turning your skills into a boat restoration business you would never be out of work.When Emma tried to " escape " on the surf board you caught her and brought her back to retrieve your pad,well done that man, and it was nice seeing her doing school home work, something here in the UK they don't always bother with it and it's a shame, education is the building blocks of life!! It was nice ,after her rest Linh inspected your work and gave it a pass and a big gold star for effort😂😂👍,well crew it's time to put away my shopping and wait for the next cookery/drinks vlog, all the best and stay safe, Pete 🇬🇧👋

Hi Teal,, excellent work as always, I learn so much for my own boat projects. I keep coming back to this vlog as prep for my hatches/deck fittings. I like the use of weather seal to contain caulking, although struggling to get something similar locally here in Australia. I have watched all of your vids but don't recall you discussing the virtues of Polyurethane/SMP adhesives versus silicone for hatches etc. You mentioned 3M 5200 here but view from others is that it is best for permanent assembly. 4200 is discontinued, so would you use 4000 for hatches or something else? Thanks again!
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын

I like the work your doing, how are you dealing with the diesel smell in the cockpit from the vents?
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
The vents were not an issue in the original location which was just a few feet away. The diesel smell occurs as fumes escape the vent while filling the tank for about 5 minutes but not noticeable after. The rest of the time the vent is to let air into the tank as the fuel level drops. The tanks are full with zero odor in the cockpit...time will tell and if an adjustment needs to be made I'll do it. Thanks for the comment.

You should use a router to make a proper insert for the breather hole. Ripping it as you did will weaken the outer structure, and it will soften and crack much sooner.

if you're worried about it and you want to make it strong you could just epoxy the inner core on the edges with the popsicle stick and then sand it with a dremel and that would make it more solid then just lay up some fiberglass and cut out whatever size grommet or washer and then epoxy it to the wall

I am watching you with the motor controls. That's funny. I am thinking they are electric controls.
Wouldn’t you be more worried about diesel fumes from the breathers in the cockpit vs the fiberglass thickness to hold them?
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
I only moved the breathers about 4' and am not too concerned. The fumes only expel as you fill the tanks and the fumes are sucked in as you deplete them. If it ever becomes an issue I will simply move them.

Teal, first off I am amazed with your attention to detail and doing it right the first time. And your glass work is amazing!!! But I agree with David, The vent in the cockpit? I have my doubts. but I also agree with you when say the smell will be strongest only when filling, but i think you will realize that the smell will get annoying sooner rather than later. Not knowing the complete layout of your boat, moving the vent in outside air may have been impossible, but watching you i don't think you would would have taken the shortcut just because it was easy. I have the same Rigid vacuum, super handy and powerful for its size. On another note, please tell me that wasn't silicone you sealed the diesel fills with, please?
@OnboardLifestyle6 жыл бұрын
Please respect that I will not answer that question. Everytime I talk sealants it's like talking politics or religion...every has an opinion and I'd rather not open that can of worms again. I have been working on boats for the better part of my life and have formed my own opinions but please feel free to talk about your favorite sealants...I am always eager to learn!
@SteelDoesMyWill6 жыл бұрын
No worries, I get the politics & religion can of worms thing. I'm only talking from experience how the wrong sealants can cause serious headaches down the road. On deck I prefer 3M 4200, but better yet 3M 4000 which is the UV stabilized version when goop is called for. In almost all other cases on deck I try to use Butyl Tape whenever possible because it never breaks down, dries out, or looses it elastic properties; plus its easy to clean off and reapply when servicing. I never use 5200 unless it a hull to keel joint, and you don't have keels so please keep that stuff away from your boat!

Sorry for the late reaction but.......When you installed your Diesel filler you did not seal the honeycomb in between the laminate. Is honeycomb not susceptible to water ingress or you solely rely on your sealant to keep the water out.
@OnboardLifestyle4 жыл бұрын
The Honeycomb is made from polypropylene and each cell is isolated from the next. I have removed many items from the boat that were installed 25+ years ago were the core was not sealed and the substrate looked like the day it was made. I do seal it with thickened epoxy in most cases but not all.
