More than that. It would be like an Italian is offended because Americans make pizza. Now, if they claim they invented it, or that the only original pizza is the american pizza, that would piss me off. But recipes are universal. There's no gatekeeping in recipes. However recipes do represent a culture, and making it elsewhere means appreciation for the other culture. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as it's performed correctly. Personally I love Japanese food, and I did look for actual Japanese websites and recipes and videos (with some help from google translate) to learn how to make them properly. Does it mean they are all central asian recipes? It's truly a worldwide ingredient. Same for wheat. Culture is in the recipes, more than the ingredients, because they represent the culinary inventiveness of a certain population and their historical background. Pizza was a well established food in Puglia from the magna graecia times, so it's technically greek (because Puglia was greek back then), but as pitta. You can still eat the old form today in Puglia, known as puccia. However, some ingredients are and remain quintessentially part of a cuisine. That's not what happened. This video clipped the actual original so out of context it's pretty much gone. The start up was not trying to replicate a traditional bubble tea recipe, in fact, what they were doing would be essentially if Suntory Whiskey were to make a "fruit punch whiskey, REAL Irish SCOTCH!!!" thereby trivializing what whiskey even is, and totally confusing the Irish and the Scottish names (because they don't care). Additionally, the two folks asking for money started out by saying that they were going to revolutionize bubble tea and that they've come up with a whole new way to "make it better," further implying that the already extant drink from Asia is somehow not really good so they're there to make it palatable. That presentation was f-ed from the start and it even pyssed me off. Then when Simu asked what they have done in terms of sourcing, they had the gall to respond with "bubble tea is no longer having anything to do with ethnicities."

@iainmcdonalds4018Ай бұрын
As another Australian, I was rather confused by your comment, how could one be an Australian Broadcasting Company? That aside, I'd never heard the term abc used in that way, so that's new, but I'm also sort of torn with regards to cultural appropriation. On the one hand, culture basically *always* involves taking things of the people inside it and from other cultures, you can even track when civilisations meet each other historically as you start to see ideas propagating from one culture to the other as soon as trade starts to occur between them. But then I would feel super uncomfortable if one culture just came in and took stuff from another without any real care or respect. A good example of that I think would be Assassin's Creed: Shadow and all the controversy that the game has been mired in, even though that is a more extreme example because some level of historical accuracy is implied in the franchise (or at least it was).

Right. The problem is that people often don't think before spouting nonsense about "cultural appropriation." It reminds me of Yellowstone (the show). In one episode, the native American chief guy says that his goal is to restore the native American lifestyle and culture to how it was before the arrival of the white man. Fast forward a couple of episodes, and they're depicting horse racing (or something similar to it. It's been a while since I watched it) as part of their culture. Complaining about cultural appropriation while using things you only have access to thanks to cultural exchange is a bit silly.

@Herr_AffeАй бұрын
@@moonknight4053 I wouldn't say that. It can get a bit preachy with the issue of colonization and such, but it's not intolerable (or super heavy-handed), as that narrative mostly comes from the native characters in the show, since the show sometimes switches the perspective from the Duttons (the protagonist family) to Chief whats-his-name and company. I simply used that particular scene to illustrate my point, I wasn't trying to say that the show was woke. It's not a bad show all in all.

I’m usually on the right, but I understand his position. It’s not something that’s easy for Europeans to understand, except maybe Italians but Asians take great pride in their food culture. It’s part of their identity. Boba tea is a part of that identity. It’s the same way if an Asian company suddenly started reinventing Scottish whiskey and marketing it as a whole new drink when really they’ve just added a bit more ice, and no reference to Scotland. It’s hard to make an analogies because Asian and European culture is so different but this isn’t so black and white

I think you guys missed the mark on this. I see the point you are trying to make, but it is an Asian product originally, and “reimagining” the boba by putting it in a can and “inventing”popping boba(which is already a popular option far before this) is just lazy. These entrepreneurs are québécois just like me, and Boba is a very popular product in this province. They could have easily made a “québécois twist” on this product and pay homage to its roots and I think it would be an amazing idea.

Boba Tea is the result of cultural fusion -- it's not some deem asian culture thing. The Dutch introduced milk and sugar to Taiwan hundreds of years ago, and people in Taiwan came to like sweet milk teas. Everyone would trace back their heritage no matter how far they needed to put something "exotic" in the ethnicity box on their profile. I used to always say I was German. At some point I acknowledged that neither me or any living relative I knew had ever lived in Germany or spoke the language, so it was just a juvenile way to try to be different from the crowd.
