The first ever boosted car I ever drove when I was 18, was an old beat up E30 with the same Turbo Cameron has.The car had it's issues, but the way the boost came on and it's very smooth torque curve is something I have never felt since. Great video and glad to see the secret of the E30 is not still in the shadows.

A quite cheap option for upgrading the brakes are Calipers from the E32 750i (Numbers 60/28/302 front, 38/20 rear) or the E34 540i (Numbers 60/28/302 front, 40/300 rear). Rotors in front are original E36 M3, rears are originals from the E46 328i (if E30 M3 wheel hubs are used) or E85 Z4 2.5si (if E36 323ti wheel hubs used). This brake system is for 5hole swap, which would be also a good upgrade, so there are no 4 to 5 hole adaptors are needed. Greetings from Germany
@gurkym35 жыл бұрын
I bought used Brembos from a 911, rebuilt them to use on my e36. Ebay price was 600 for set front and back. With mounting hardware, new seals and dust boots all in around 1400. Doing the rebuild myself. Not sure about clearances for the E30 if they would work. Just putting it out there.
@physicsofdemolition5 жыл бұрын
If you do e36 front knuckles you can also run e46 330 calipers/rotors which are the same size as e36 m3 brakes without the price
@ZeroCool-vn9bd5 жыл бұрын
You can also do the 750i brake master cylinder, I'd highly suggest braided brake lines if you plan to track the car. Ate SuperBlue racing brake fluid is awesome, and has the super cool identical gold fluid, which makes diagnosing a full bleed really fast. I've run it on the track cars I've had and on my DOT fluid race mountain bikes, with great success.
@physicsofdemolition5 жыл бұрын
Eric Prosch-Jensen e32 brake cylinder or e38?
@ZeroCool-vn9bd5 жыл бұрын
@@physicsofdemolition I bought the E32 750iL Ate OEM part, and it bolted right up to the booster and brake lines on my 1988 Super ETA/2.5iS head and intake, which is important since the IM is bigger. I just have stock sized E30 brakes with better pads and rotors, and it definitely made the brake pedal throw shorter, while when you want to stop hard maybe you need to push the pedal a little harder since the piston is larger diameter(25mm), the reason I went with it. Plus it's the same price as an E30 unit. Some people have said it shifts more bias to the front, which I can't confirm or disconfirm, but when I wanted to stop or have controlled short breaking or heal-toe all felt better and got better times on the Auto-X events.

This is a perfect example that many people don't seem to understand. Unless you wan't some straight line hero car, going with a smaller turbo can make you faster. A lot faster. Driving fast is more than just highway pulls and drag racing at the strip. A 600hp car is most likely gonna run circles around that same car with 1000hp, anywhere but in a straight line.

Being an E30 owner, this truly means so much to me. I have always watched /drive and /tuned wondering when an E30 would make it onto one of their videos. Like Kameron, the E30 was my first car, they are great cars, and as you all can see in the video they are loads of fun. I just wanted to comment, to let /Tuned, and Kameron know that not only does this make me want to do more mods to my car, but it opens up new possibilities for what my car could be. Again, thank you for sharing this video.

Great job Cameron, cheapest upgrade for brakes on the E30 is a set of E28 535i front struts (used on the E30 M3 with a shorter stoke shock absorber also gives you the 5-lug, for the rear end, a e36 compact rear subframe bolts straight in, I did not fit the diff so I am unsure of driveshaft legths but by eye it looked fine. Beautiful car mate. Wouldnt mind learning about the turbo build upgrades you have done.

Man, I remember back around 8 years ago or so these car were practically given away in the personal ads every week. Nobody really wanted them since they were seen as too old and small for a mature male owner and too finicky and pricey to fix for young enthusiasts who chose Japanese FWDs instead. I remember clowning on a guy in high school with a 325i and blowing his doors off with my tiny turbo'd 1.5 Civic. LOL, now I'd drool over a clean 325i E30 5 speed. How the times change...

My uncle has always been one of those persons who loves to drive fast and after a trip to the beach with him i instantly fell in love with bimmers. The performance, the comfort and the way the car handles is fucking amazing so i tarted watching more videos of E46 and other bimmers. It was after drive posted this video that i instantly fell in love with E30's. I can't imagine myself not buying an E30 after i finish school. Mine was an 86 eta manual with a getrag 260 tranny and a 91 325is engine swap (got the eta with a blown engine) I've driven (not owned) some hotrods, newer m3s, and even an SLS (terrifying) but nothing I've been behind the wheel of feels as natural as the e30. I really hope you find one, even if its an old beater, 90% of the OEM parts are incredibly cheap. The only secret advice I can tell you is get a 50ish amp inline fuse and immediately replace the fuse hidden in the battery terminal. It took me a week to figure out thats why my e30 wouldnt start.

***** well, there are a few tiers of them. The following info is off the top of my head. Just a base 325, the an e (economy) that has a 2.7 liter engine that makes less HP but more torque. The E has both E and ES (ES has a spoiler and a better valence). The next level up is the I (injected) that has a 2.5 liter engine with more HP and less torque. There is an I and IS (IS, same principle as E to ES). The IS is the top tier below the M3. You get leather sports seats, better steering wheel, Premium sound system (tweeters on doors) and one or two other little things. From base to max it relatively goes: 318/325 E,ES,I,Vert,IS,M3. Only difference with the Vert is that you get seat heaters in the late model. One last fact, the difference between the 318 and 325 is the 318 has a 4 cylinder and the 325 has a 6 cylinder.

+Ben C Love the 2.7 ETA motors. My buddy had a matte black E30 with the classic combo 2.7 ETA bottom end with 325i head, and some more bolt ons, big cam. Sounded really mean. When you heard the idle you knew something was up. My own A3 turbo was putting down 220hp, and his E30 was as fast, if not a little faster at peak hp. Not bad for an old NA M20 motor from the 1980's. Economy was awful tho because of the cam, probably 13-14 mpg. Regret not buying it before he sold it.

Very VERY nice! I think someone needs to toss some cred his dad's way for letting him do all of that in his garage. It's usually not the car that causes the problem. It's usually people bitching about it not running and how messed up the garage is that stops these stories from coming to fruition.

What about E46 and F22? Both are great, and with the essence of the e30 (specially the F22)
@Nakke14410 жыл бұрын
The E46 with some stylish alloys and the right colour is a good looking car. The F22 is horrid though in my opinion. I think the last good looking and cool BMW was the M3 CSL.

2 series with M pack, and specially M235i live is sick, proper compact size and incredible handling, and wait for the M2... (BMW 1M is also sick) M3 CSL is sick, nut was a imited edition, and way more expensive car.

The best thing about BMW e30 is that feel of a brand new car while you driving it. The quality is amazing!!!!!

I had three of them, and still wish, 9 years later, that I did not had to sell my 323i 2 door - Chrome bumper. It was in mint condition, me the 2nd owner of it. They are solid built cars. I currently own a 330i, which I do appreciate BIG time, but there is just something about the E30's...
@crazeemann111 жыл бұрын
DIY Slave It's that sensation of solidity when you shut the door,or turn the heating knob,or slam the glove box..feeling the same just from the day you bought it 25 years ago.

I've never understood some peoples obsession with 'literally' burning rubber. It just seems like a crazy waste of money. That said I've always had a soft spot for the E30 BMW. My friend who taught me to drive back in the 80's owned a BMW 325i with the M-tec body kit. This more than any other made me truly fall in love with cars and driving. Blasting down country lanes in that car, hearing the mellifluous sound of that glorious straight 6 is one of my favourite driving memories. What car did it for you?
@Kyle900t11 жыл бұрын
The classic Saab 900 turbo did it for me. Now that it's gone, I'd love to give an E30 a go.
@DreamCarGarage111 жыл бұрын
Ooo I really like those Saabs. Quite small, chunky and quirky looking. I wouldn't mind one myself but they are 'super' rare. If you did happen to find one I'm sure they'd cost a fortune. Classy choice.
@GoldenStrikePT11 жыл бұрын
That soft spot is totally justified, the 80's/early 90's cars had alot more charisma and appeal, and the bmw's back then were totally the "gentleman's car" in my opinion. Me? I'm a very very proud owner of a E30 316i Coupe, totally kept stock, already with more than 200.000km's on the oddometer, and still runs great, no mechanical problems whatsoever, and fuel consumption, i'm averaging 8l/100km's. While it could do a bit less, i find it hard to keep off the gas pedal for long periods :) Every day i drive that car is an event, and what's fun is that i get alot of feedback from other drivers, all of them praising my car. Every now and then i drive by another E30 and there's immediate eye contact and a smile between me and its driver :) I think the E30 charm makes the owners feel a little thing called love :D

Decided to try the e30 platform after only doing K series and B series 90s civics/Integras... so far I once again feel at home by the fact that I feel fully immersed and enamored by this tuner platform. BMW e30s are goated in my eyes 4L.

I nearly cried. Back in the day my now ex girlfriend bought me a 89 325is for my birthday. Car came in glossy black with 5 double spoke chrome wheels and a black leather interior. I tell you, the leathery interior smell of the car is unforgettable. That care is definitely one of a kind. I now drive a 2007 Mecerdes Benz and the E30 is definitely a nicer car. I too worked on it, my problems were brakes and overheating, but the end result was a big smile while drifting thru every corner....

Hey everyone, Kam, the builder of this car lost his dad to a 10 year fight with cancer, now he's parting this car to pay medical bills, this isn't fair to Kam. A family friend set up a gofundme to help, if you can donate, it would be appreciated. www.gofundme.com/bakermemorialfund

An alternative for brakes would be to source brembo 4 pots from 740i e38, machine custom brackets and find a pair of rotors to fit. Less than 400$? Especially if you source the brake calipers from a junk yard.
@AndiS21-u6r10 жыл бұрын
UPDATE: According to a few members on several forums, the 8 Series 4 Pot Brembo's actually mate up exactly on the E36 (non M) front Spindle, throw on a pair of E46 M3 front rotors (345mmx28mm) and you have a budget brake upgrade. OR a 330Ci (e46) has 325mmx25mm front rotors with a big single piston.

Beautiful car, nice story. Great classic BMW, one of the very few models I'd like to own myself. (there's tons of BMW where I live so it becomes rather boring) The owner seems to be pretty silent and polite, doesn't SEEM to be a speed junky on first sight if he wasn't standing next to his car. But I bet, once he enters the monster he sometimes turns into something more aggressive and less shy. ;-) We people wouldn't drive turbo'ed cars, especially not tuning it to 400hp, if we didn't feel the need for some experience at the limits.
