Im a mustang fan and owner, and i thought the same myself but, I'm more than sure the whole controversy is ment to work in the favor of its sales. Fact is, if it didn't have the mustang name few people would've paid any attention to it good or bad. Ford would've never gave it a cool all new name and it wouldve flown so far under peoples radar no one would've cared or even known of its existence. So.The namesake not only calls attention but it also takes on the mustang styling, but in its execution looks fantastic!. at the end of the day Ford took a risk meddling with the name but i think its going to pay out big time. Its a great vehicle worthy of the name, and moreover its simply an addition to the mustangs already in the stable. It not ment to replace the mustang only provide a breed in segment. And least we forget, Porsche did the same with the Cayenne. A separate vehicle in the spirit of the 911 addressing an entirely different segment.

Ford seems to be nailing these "special" releases recently. It appears that the blue oval will just be a collection of sub brands by the end of the decade
@Miata8224 жыл бұрын
That feeds into their new management strategy as well.OEMs are famous for having information "silos," not sharing design work out of individual departments. That leads of course to turf wars. Some time back Ford started trying design teams, where people from all different departments (drivetrain, sheet metal, interior, assembly, etc.) would be permanently attached to a new vehicle project. With everybody working on the same thing it is easier to bounce ideas around and make sure everything came together into a logical project. This was discussed on the Autoline podcast (KZbin) maybe three years ago but I'm too lazy to look up a link just now. Seeing the new vehicles Ford is rolling out I have to say it looks like this reorganization worked. Can't wait to see what's next.

Great video and review. This was the first time I heard the vehicle uses resistive heating. That’s a big deal if you live in a cold climate. Range will drop in the winter when compared to the Tesla Model Y with its heat pump. Surprised that didn’t make it on to your red light list. I’m with you regarding the use of the Mustang name. Mostly because I feel the Mustang styling cues look forced. I like some aspects of the exterior, especially the profile and black sloped roof. But what would/could the designers have done to the front and rear if the car had a different name? I also wonder if Ford slapped the Mustang name on it to generate buzz. What’s that saying that even bad press is good press? Overall, a solid EV entry that appears competitive. Looking forward to seeing one on the road soon.
@tylerpubben42164 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I doubt it will be a problem just like it has not been a problem for Tesla up until now. Heat pumps add efficiency in a pretty narrow temperature range. Below about 5 degrees C (40 freedom degrees) they are roughly equivalent to resistive heating. And it isn't until much below that where range takes a huge hit. Plus. With 350-400km of range you'd have to take a 60% range penalty before the car is no longer viable for day-to-day commuting. No EV makes a lot of sense if you don't have a place to charge it at night.

I can guess some of the cooler, green related names were taken (Bolt, Volt, Leaf, ...). Ever heard of the term “any publicity is good publicity”? Or whatever that saying is. Why invest in a new naming strategy and pour millions in advertising when you can re-use an iconic name that you already own, it got you talking about it. There is a very good chance the Mustang coupe will cease to make business sense for Ford and the development costs will make it irrelevant in Ford’s future plans. Why not preserve the iconic name with a future proof product? Mustangs with ICE propulsion will become even more niche then they are now, perhaps they will go extinct (heresy you say?), the future will prove. Of course I love V8 engined cars as much as everybody else (even the ecoboost 4 banger does well btw), but at some point, they will all become irrelevant when electric cars continue to improve effortless 0-60 times without even trying.

They nailed a lot of the must haves from design, to quality and some other bits. I was never in the market for such a car to begin with, but wow, this one is just cool. Do they have the battery production capacity at Ford? They can sell a lot of these, however many they can build. Although Tesla has had many many years to prepare, I still think this will give them a run for their money. The 2 issues I see are limited availability and smaller charging network compared to Tesla. And perhaps issue #3, the elephant in the room, the dealer network, ready to ruin what seems like an upcoming successful launch.

Have to say Tom, the Mach-E does look good from certain angles and in certain colors. My problem with the Mustang name, it hints at a lack of faith in the platform by Ford management and marketing. Ford is using the Mustang name as a crutch, instead of honoring this new platform with a unique name and an identity it does not need to share with another product line.

Great overview. You can turn off that 'electric sound' in Menu.

Even on (which is what you hear when I punch it), it's kind of subtle.

I am guessing they'll drop the Mustang part at some point. Think of the Nissan Pathfinder Armada, or Toyota Camry Solara. It's brand recognition, and they eventually dropped the name connections. So, don't let the name jam you up. 👍🏻
