The other issue with high end cars is that they’re always introducing new technology and mechanics in their cars. They rarely get to a place where they perfect their build. This is why Toyota’s and Honda’s have excellent reliability. They’ll continue to use the same engine through several generations. However, they’re not as exciting or fun to drive as luxury vehicles.

Land Rover has always had reliability issues (I’ve owned several). As a certified automotive technician, I have owned, driven and repaired many. They have placed in the bottom for dependability since the 70s. Technology/electronics wasn’t an issue through the 70s, 80s & 90s. Poor quality rubber components (often outsourced to India), poor quality plastic, (often outsourced to the lowest-bidder) and poor quality electrical components (electrical not electronic) are just a few of the common issues I have personal witnessed over the years. With over 30 experience, I can honestly say there are much more reliable/durable 4x4s available (usually for less money). The reality is if you’re buying a Land Rover to use as 4x4 (not just occasionally playing) your probably making a mistake. If you’re looking for a luxury SUV that gets attention (and happens to be a 4x4) you’re probably going to love it. Also, reliability is relative to type-of-use and environment. “Most” Brits. & Europeans don’t use their vehicles as often, as much(as in miles/kilometers), or in as many different terrains as American drivers do and they aren’t (typically) as abusive. I suspect this is why Land-Rover hasn’t had to up it’s durability/reliability game as much as most American domestic car manufacturers. With that said. Like so many things, it boils down to personal preferences/decisions. If a man loves corvettes and chooses one for a daily-driver he’ll probably never admit to their unpracticality or other issues and we all know a woman who has a favorite dress or pair of shoes that are as uncomfortable as hell, but she keeps wearing them because they look good. It’s been my experience that the typical Land Rover owner either Loves their Land-Rover and is willing to accept its flaws/issues or they Love their Land-Rover so much that they are in denial of its flaws/issue. P.S. Calling commenters “morons” and “idiot-keyboard-warriors” after posting a video on KZbin (for the whole world to see) and asking for feed back actually makes you look like a “moron” or “idiot keyboard warrior”yourself. Whether intentional or not these types of comments make it sound as if: 1) you don’t truly want to hear honest criticism of Land Rover products. 2) if someone’s comment doesn’t match your opinion you’ll go on the defensive with insults. This is counterproductive if your looking for honesty and truth, in any situation/discussion. You asked for feedback. This is mine.

Perfect response. I can say I was the same about BMW. I hated it because others told me they were garbage. I’m now on my 2nd BMW and man do I love them so much. I’d like to try a Range Rover one day just to see what the hype about them is all about. I’m single and don’t have much responsibilities at all. Hopefully God blessed one day when I can purchase a nice Range for myself. Afterall “life is too short to drive boring cars”.

Which is not ultra reliable. Is more expensive to run and maintain and bleeds on resale value… ( it’s never let me down. But there is room for improvement) however I like the merc. It has much more tech. Which I like. The comfort and ride quality is insane and to top it off it looks good. I will buy another one. It’s all about what you want as a person.

Couldn't agree with you more. I've owned Land Rover, Range Rover, Rover Jaguar, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, GM, Citroen, Nissan and more. Each and every one of them have had some kind of problem but as an example, my first Range Rover was a 1999 P38, purchased in 2004. I had it for six years and NO major breakdowns. My last Audi however was a 2012 A6 bought in 2015, I kept it for just over a year before selling it for spares. In just one year I had an EGR valve, a turbo, the ABS module, a window motor all fail. The final straw was the turbo failing a second time so I gave up on it. No, not all Audi's are bad either. I now have a 2018 Jaguar XFR bought new and the most expensive thing i've replaced is the oil and filters. Did you know there are Land Rovers built in the 1940's still in daily use.

I currently have a Velar P300. Had it from new, now 3 year old, 25,000 miles. On two 9r three occasions my lcd screen has frozen, however fixed itself next time engine started. Biggest problem is brake use. Disc and pad change every 10,000 miles at a cost of £500 a wheel. I've paid out £4,000 for 20,000 miles just on brakes. I note that the 2023 models have moved onto Brembo brakes. That will hopefully resolve the problem. Love Range Rover.

My LR3 has 175k miles, no major issues, hardly even anything minor even after dozens of off road trips, an accident and skipping probably half of the recommended services. It’s amazing seeing other cars of the same age with fewer miles and they’ll have a bunch of little issues and things that do t work like buttons and worn seats... even after years with a Bernese mountain dog my interior is basically spotless somehow, it’s just so durable. Couldn’t be happier with it.

I'm wondering if only driving 10k to 12k miles is the issue in reliability. I drive a E350 and have put nearly 50k miles on it this year and have literally only needed oil changes. It has 81k now and still on the first set of brakes from factory. It's a 2013. Not one issue other than the ac fan squeaks which I'll change soon, easy fix, takes like 5min to swap out.

How can anyone make a comment on reliability when a vehicle is less than 3 to 5 years old? Records on reliability are rarely determined by the first owner or a vehicle under warranty. Reliability is determined after about 150000 km's and that is usually when a luxury car starts to have issues mostly due to its complexity. Land Rovers are beautiful vehicles and a person can buy these fairly cheap on the used car market when they are around 10 years old. But the new owner has to be prepared to spend a fair amount of money restoring the vehicle with new parts. Personally I think its still worth it because they are very nice to drive. I have a 2010 LR2, built on the same chasis as the Volvo XC platform. But things go on these trucks prematurely IMO. But considering what they can be bought for they see worth the price. A Similar Lexus costs twice as much on the used car market and yes they will need less initial parts replacement but they get old and need maintenance just like any other vehicle
@DrivenHard

I bought a used Range Rover 322 7years ago and it was awesome! yup. After the air suspension went out and I had a teeny tiny electrical hiccup (smoke)...I bought a a cheap 80 series land cruiser and swapped teh engine. Now my 322 Range Rover is incredibly reliable....even after 7 years. I am sorry, but i'm not an idiot in the comment section or a keyboard warrior. You are an idiot for saying that your viewers are idiots. If you wanna flex and just show off pretending you have money, buy a range rover; if you want real reliability with minimal issues, by a land cruiser.

It’s true, a lot of people assume reliability problems for the rest of that cars lineup just because they see a couple issues.. it’s a big problem with pretty much all higher end car, Mercedes, BMW, Porsche, Range Rover, Bentley, everything higher end people have something to say about and half the time is also lack of maintenance, warm up times and gasoline uses. Then some cars actually have big problems, like BMWs from the mid 2000s E60/E66. Now those issues of the past follows them into the 2010s.. now all modern BMWs are plagued with the reliability problems that actually don’t exist.
@DrivenHard
@DrivenHard 3 жыл бұрын
So true BB. And as with all modern cars, the more sophisticated they become the more complicated they become to maintain. If people want easy to fix, cheap to maintain vehicles go buys stuff from the early 90s and live with that. Luxury car makers no longer make cars that they intend to be driven for 15 years problem free, they make them with the intention that people who spend 100K+ on a car, want it new and with the latest tech and 4 or 5 years later will do the same again. That right there is what most people fail to remember.

Not necessarily about maintenance because I Bought my Range Rover sport brand new , drove it home, next day electrical issues detected as ⚠️ lights came up on screen and the whole thing shut down. @@DrivenHard used technology jargon , something like software glitch . They just gave me curtesy car though and apologised for the hiccup but I was soon back with my car. In the UK 🇬🇧 we get more protection and extended warranty on cars, I’m not sure about N. America . I just thought , the fact I’m spending loads of cash on a luxury car with all added options, it shouldn’t have those problems . I have been paranoid ever since , although it hasn’t had a problem except for the centre console (touch screen freezing) . I have AA but it’s embarrassing you’d agree if ones stranded whilst cheap cars drive 😂 so I only take it out occasionally with family and use my x6 as a regular which doesn’t have any issue. We do yearly services here and something called MOT which is mandated by law to check everything’s functional & road legal .

I have a 2020 XE and I can agree with the assembly line sentiment. I had an issue where my center screens would go black and a little bit of the tach display as well. I noticed it happened more after car washes. It was obviously a module that was not communicating. Took the dealer a month to figure it out which was annoying but they were nice and gave me a loaner after a few days. Turned out to be a pinched wire in the rear bumper. They rerouted the wire and never had the issue again. I suspect that the wire was loose from the assembly line and after numerous underbody wash sprays pushing the wire up more caused it to catch onto something and get pinched. Cats don’t like water I guess lol also if you have the 20” rims on the XE do not use the pirellis P zeros. Absolute awful tire. Had to replace a whole set already cause of bubble in them.

I have a 2020 RRS with the inline 6. Love it as well. Had a few random electronic glitches over the past year but I expected that going in. Love this car though. Statistically, I do think you’re more likely to have issues with a JLR product but I agree it shouldn’t be something that holds you back from getting one if you love the car otherwise. The defender is a brand new car with brand new electronic systems and engines so of course you are more likely to have issues in the first couple model years vs a 4Runner which hasn’t changed in basically a decade. That’s a big part of Toyota/Lexus secret btw- they are very slow to update things. Take a look at the new IS- basically the same interior and engines as the previous gen. Lexus GX is still sporting an infotainment system from like 2005! I get the “only buy Toyota” mentality if you only can afford one car and it absolutely has to get you to work each day. By all means then get a Corolla. But when you get into the luxury sector, let’s be honest most people only keep the cars for the warranty period. And if you want the latest greatest tech and performance, you’re going to be in the bleeding edge. Same thing with any of the European brands. I actually think the higher end Land Rover products feel better built/use better materials than much of the competition. My sports interior kind of reminds me (in a good way) of an old school Mercedes for example. So my sense is that yeah you might have a few more glitches during the warranty period than other brands but it’s really nothing worth getting bent out of shape about or buying a car you otherwise hate (for me that would be any current Lexus other than the new LC coupe). Like any bad reputation though, JLR would have to consistently deliver best in class reliability for 5 or more years to shake their bad rep. That’s just how it is.

I've heard land rovers are MUCH better in Europe than they are in North America, mainly because they are diesel over there. But I've heard land rovers are sort of improving in North America, mainly due to more people buying them. Another thing, is general when a new model or generation comes out, don't buy the first year of that model or generation, cause they will generally have to iron out all of the production kinks at all, as you stated. That's just my opinion on this entire controversy. I think the new defender is a decent vehicle, but I want to wait a year or two, just to see long range updates on how its doing, cause I plan to buy one. I don't have my heart dead set on a new defender, I am considering a 4-door Ford Bronco aswell.
@DrivenHard
@DrivenHard 3 жыл бұрын
I think their larger engines are way more reliable then their smaller petrol ones for sure. We don't have a ton of diesel options here since NA is really just getting into the diesel market still. I FULLY agree with you about the first year model issues. It's like that with all manufacturers pretty much.
@seanbrosnan2074
@seanbrosnan2074 3 жыл бұрын
@@DrivenHard Yeah pretty much. Land rover should bring over some of their diesels, or make a new one for the North American market. But with DEF in the US, it really sets people off from buying a diesel, along with diesel particulate filters, so I think it would be too much of a hassle for land rover to do that if they are not going to make a profit.

I loved my RRS always drove great. Just a solid drive, but the electronics was always a problem for me. Stop and get gas, get back in and the entertainment system doesn't come on... That's just one of the issues. The problem is if you're spending 100k+ on a car you don't expect to have a lot of electronic issues. Luckily my car was new and the dealer fixed most of the issues, after many attempts. I was in an accident with a police cruiser, I tee boned him and the police car completely folded... Even the officers on the scene were like "damn that rover took that well". I sold it shortly after it was fixed. It's a unique car/ride and I really enjoyed it but it did have reliable issues for a modern $100k+ vehicle. Their customer service department state that this is a fair wear and tear issue and they will not reimburse dealers who have changed them after customer complaints. They have also stated that using an aggressive wheel wash product can cause rust!, Pathetic!! Unfortunately I didn’t change to another Land Rover and purchased L200 animal truck. Worst vehicle I’ve ever owned. But unfortunately people I know are not considering the land rover because of TFL post, but myself on the other hand test drove a new defender about 3 months ago and I must say it is excellent brilliant to drive and I absolutely love it. I’m currently drive golf gti as my pleasure car, and transporter for work, but after driving defender I will be purchasing a new defender sometime in 2021 so I can’t wait. Unfortunately in life you do get a bad model, I’m a Volkswagen fan love there cars etc, but my dad purchased one last year only to find that half it the boot and passenger back seat soaking in water, the car had to be stripped and sorted and is ok now, so this doesn’t make Volkswagn bad but proves a point that you do get a lemon from time to time. This very biased review. So first making a rant about people pointing out Land Rover unreliability then admitting having two issues since new... you just contradicted yourself there. I think no need to get angry - Land Rover is well known for production issues exactly - something that doesn’t happen nearly as often with majority of other cars and that’s a fact - there are actually statistics you can look at and not what I think or what you think. It’s also a fact that majority people that drive them love them DESPITE those issues - and you are one of the examples. I really like them and hope to get one but I would be stupid or naive not to think I won’t have any issues like with my Beemer. Being realistic helps. P.s. power of KZbin I totally agree with you - things can get overblown here but in this case it fits the profile so you can’t blame people as it’s logical connection.

@@DrivenHard I would be on a safe side and say its too early to judge and sure one public case doesn't tell the picture and its possible they have built a reliable model now. But i would not bet on it though :) Manufacturing process is very complicated and we dont appreciate the complexity nearly enough. Quality assurance has got loads of catching up to do in that regards, part of the problem could be because they are built in Britain.... i would bet my money if it was done in Germany there wouldnt be majority of the issues. I do wonder if used Range is possible a better idea - you avoid new model hiccups, and technically all major initial production issues should be addressed - question how is the long term reliability of parts. Any idea?
@DrivenHard
@DrivenHard 3 жыл бұрын
I am a big believer of never being first year models, too many hiccups that need to be sorted out. Those get sorted after a few build cycles. Not sure about parts. I only intend to keep my vehicles during the warranty period so I don't really think about that too much

It really depends, each driver has own individual driving style and history, I have seen ppl brutally driving rr, most ppl driving it nicely, some of them driving them for daily commuting, some only drives them for a weekend, off roads, mountains, etc. I expect to buy a used good condition one with only city, highway drive, but the chance is rare, you don't know what the previous owner has done with it.

Refused to cover it?? Under warranty? M what on earth did you do? Clearly if they dodnt want to cover it cause you did something means, YOU were the issue not the car. What's the fully story? Did you try a different dealership? That can make a difference since they are all independent

If Lexus can produce cars with extreme quality and reliability. Then why for twice the amount of money can Land Rover make one that will last 1/4 the amount of time before they are mechanically totaled. I understand that Land Rover tries to stay ahead of the curve with tech but they haven’t made a reliable car since like the 50s

Regarding defender or bronco its going to come down to what you want to do with it really. Defender is going to ride on road light years better then the bronco, bronco will be way easier and cheaper to mod if you are going to do some heavy mods, jeep like style. If you do go defender, go for the larger engine though

Sexiest car, I love them... but Land Rover will NEVER improve reliability because they make too much money on the servicing and the people who can afford to buy them are willing to pay the price due to the near unparalleled luxury and status... pisses me off honestly, i'd be Land Rovers biggest fan if they didn't intentionally not improve their reliability.

You can't compare a 7 series to another suv it doesn't make sense. The X5 drives like a car compared to a Range Rover that is why they are so popular, they appeal to a different market. BMW are just as expensive to fix out of warranty, all European brands are like that

It’s what you want. Most owners (RR) want the ride of it and the legacy behind it. Toss it back every 3 years and get a new one. It’s like an iphone. Always grab the newest model l. LC owners keep them for 10 years. That’s why Toyota doesn’t update their stuff every few years.
