@davidjohnson84753 жыл бұрын
You shouldn't buy any service contracts, extended warranties, and don't trust a BBB rating. Here's an example of one (the last one I'll ever purchase) that will explain why I feel that way. I shared this on Quora. I bought a used 2012 Camaro SS in 2014 with 5300 miles on it. Against my better judgment I purchased an extended warranty. I have found that extended warranties are generally only as good as the dealer you buy it at, meaning how honest is the dealer. Well 6 months after making my purchase the brake warning light came on, so I took it to the dealer to have them check it out. After all it's under warranty. I dropped it off and went and had breakfast, then came back. When I walked in I asked the service writer what they had found. The first thing out of his mouth was, "these aren't the original brakes". I said they are the brakes that were on the car when I bought it. Then I asked why it mattered? He told me since they weren't the original brakes they aren't covered by the warranty. Again I told him they are the brakes that were on the car when I bought the warranty and car. And then I said no where in the warranty, and at no time did anyone say the brakes aren't covered by the warranty. To make a long story shorter we finally ended up agreeing to $37 instead of $67 for them to tighten down a nut on the back of the caliper and them adding some brake fluid. Well after this I went home and checked my warranty to see if I could cancel it, which I did and got 90% of what I had paid for it back. But there's more to this story. I took my car to a shop that specializes in brakes and asked them if there was any way the could tell if these brakes were original or not, and they said yes. So they put it up on the rack and removed all 4 tires and inspected the brakes. They came in and told me that they were the original brakes from the factory, the person that had owned the car before me had just painted the calipers red to dress them up. They took me out and showed me that if you looked close you could see the Brembo and Chevy emblem through the paint. This is why I will never purchase another extended warranty again. And if you're smart you won't either. I'm willing to bet my car that the negative stories about warranties far out number the positive ones. Mainly because there are "NO" honest dealers out there. Otherwise why would this dealer lie to me about my brakes when they could have turned it over to the warranty company to pay for it? I'll tell you why because they have no intention of honoring any warranty they sell, they just plan on lying to you and saying it isn't covered by the warranty and having you pay for it. It's known as double dipping. But I'm sure the fear factor will win out as usual. Remember this answer the next time you spend "THOUSANDS" of dollars for a extended warranty, that is worded to protect the warrantor, and keep them from having to cover repairs. UPDATE: Thanks for all the upvotes. After reading some comments I thought I would add some thing. One of the things I left out of the story to shorten it was that when I wanted to test drive the car they told me I could only drive it on their lot until they had a chance to do a safety inspection. If they did a "safety inspection" as they claim how did they miss all the brake fluid that was on the inside of the rim that the caliper was leaking from? Because I know it was there because I took all of my tires and rims off the next day to clean them ( I'm anal if you haven't figured that out) and it was there. The only reason I didn't take it back to them that day is because I figured if there was a problem they would have caught it and fixed it when they did their inspection. And the brakes were working fine, and the light didn't come on for another 6 months. So that proves they never actually did a "safety inspection" because the brakes would most definitely be part of that inspection. Proving again that there are "NO" honest dealers out there. As far as carefully reading the warranty, what's the point if they are going to lie about everything to get you to pay for it any way? Like I said the warranty is written to make it almost impossible to get a repair covered any way. Exclusions that include normal wear and tear, and improper maintenance, to give a few can be interpreted any way the warrantor wants to. And believe me the dealer service writers and mechanics are going to say anything the dealer wants if they want to keep their jobs. The consumer has the cards stacked against them, and will always lose.

kelamo I don’t think they are a scam like they are made out to be. They are a legally binding contract to the company that sells them. Most people who buy one don’t use it or don’t read the contract to see what they cover and think that it covers anything and everything, and then get mad when they try to make a claim on a not covered part. If you do your research on them, but one from a reputable company, and read your contract so you know exactly what it covers and the exclusions on those covered parts, like lack of maintenance, you will be good and educated on your purchase. Don’t buy one if the car is still under manufacturers warranty, then it’s basically worthless.

Gameswithajump look I have had these warranties and they are like I said a scam 100% I would never get one no warranty is better than a factory aftermarket warranty is trash
@Theultrazombiekiller4 жыл бұрын
@@only1true540 I get that, a lot of people are scammed into them. When I bought my car it was out of factory warranty, had 86,000 miles on, and I bought a warranty from my credit union and 4 months later my transmission went out. Then 2 months after that my radiator went out, and then 6 months after that my wheel bearing and bushings had to be replaced. My warranty covered every one of those repairs minus my $50 deductible, and paid for my rental car when my car was in the shop. So in my circumstance, it worked. If you buy from reputable companies, buy from a local credit union, read your entire contract, and have a car that no longer had factory warranty, it might also work for you.

The very fact that this “service” exists at all is proof that it is a scam. If you add up all of money that CarShield collects through premiums, it would have to exceed the amount they pay out in claims or else the company will go bankrupt. So on average, you will certainly be paying more than you’ll get back if you ever do actually file a claim. I have heard that insurance companies actually do run a small deficit between claims and premiums, and make up that shortfall with other investments but still, insurance is different - it’s required by law. I doubt CarShield does this - they just take advantage of people like the unsuspecting man in this video.

And nowadays cars can make it easily up 150,000 miles with little to no repairs. I've owned many cars. I have three cars that have over 250,000 miles with original engine and transmission.. Insurance only pays for motor and transmission. They don't pay for the small stuff that actually does go wrong in the hundred fifty thousand like starters and alternators. This is just a well-thought-out insurance policy. So the insurance providers can make a ton of money. And even if somebody does turning the claim there's probably a glitch where you can't get any money anyway.

One of my buddies is a BMW convertible lover. He buys used returned lease cars, and he buys extended warranties for those cars because anybody that has had a BMW car, or motorcycle, has experienced The seemingly excessive total cost of repairs and maintenance on those premium vehicles.. my friend was paying $155 a month on his first of three BMW convertibles, the top would not go up electrically anymore. He had to take it to two different dealerships before they figured out what was wrong. Water was getting into the trunk, and the control/electronic component that controls the power to make the roof go up and down, was mounted in the lowest part of the trunk where the water would collect. $3100 to repair/replace parts. Not covered by extended warranty. another issue with that first BMW. His drivers side power window stopped working. It was stuck in the down position. Not covered by extended warranty. I think that was around $1200.. his second BMW convertible, the driver seat frame broke. Same warranty company, $155 a month every month, the seat was not covered under warranty. he also had some type of a problem with his brakes in that car, I don’t know exactly what it was, but it was not covered either, and I think that cost him around $900 out of pocket.. histhird BMW convertible again. It had a floor mounted shifter even though it was an automatic transmission. But you could put it into some type of a mode where you could operate the shift lever as though it were a stick shift. That mechanism broke. It was a very common failure because the parts were on backorder and no salvage yard had any left to sell used. that was $2900 out of pocket when the parts came in finally, not covered under warranty.. he had several smaller issues like an ABS sensor, some type of sensors on the radiator that were not covered either. my point is, that $155 a month, for over 10 years while he had those three BMWs, added up to over $19,000 he paid into that extended auto mechanical warranty company. add that $19,000 to the over $10,000 he ended up paying out of his own pocket for repairs that that insurance company rejected.. my friend finally saw the light. He saw that it is much cheaper, change that, much much much cheaper to just pay for the repairs out of your own pocket if they happen because you’re gonna end up paying for them anyway out of your own pocket.. with those extended warranty companies, it’s a case of: “ The big print gives it to you- and the little print takes it away” when my wife and I bought our last five new vehicles since 2000. When we are in the final stage of purchase in the closing room with the notary, and the guy that takes care of the documentation and getting all the papers signed. that guy behind the desk getting all of the documentation and payment done. Has pressured us every time to buy extended warranties through the company selling the cars. Honda, suzuki, GMC, ram, and Hyundai vehicles we bought brand new, they all highly pressured us to buy extended warranties and or some type of insurance that would edge all of the glass with the vehicle serial number making the glass less likely to be resold on the black market. I finally had enough of that pressure because they do not take the first two no’s for an answer.. I told him I don’t want it I’m not interested, and the guy always starts off again saying yes, but: and then he goes into his sales pitch again.. when I bought my latest vehicle, a Dodge ram pick up truck new. I told the salesman at the end of the deal, OK, I will buy this vehicle if you will promise me I will not be besieged by the document guy trying to get me to buy an extended warranty .. he said I will see to it. Believe it or not, I got the same high pressure sales pitch from the document guy and I stood up and said, I’m gonna walk out of here if you don’t stop trying to get me to buy one of these warranties. I’m sick of this. And he finally shut his yap…

The news reporters aren't telling us why the cost wasn't covered. That's a telling sign. The best strategy is to purchase a vehicle with at least a year of the original warranty. Then each month save what you would have paid in monthly extended warranty payments (better yet, 125% to 150% of an extended warranty payment). Then when you have a breakdown you'll have the money to repair the vehicle. But you have to have the discipline to save and not touch that money. This is a simple concept that the very poor fail to comprehend- which is why they are perpetually poor. They are just as competently able to save money like everyone else. But we keep treating them like they are not.

I'm an auto mechanic and everytime a customer brings their car shield covered vehicle into the shop we call them and the company denies paying diagnostic fees and when the customer pays those fees to find out the bad news they need a motor or transmission car shield denies paying the cost. I am glad that you had a good experience with GWC. I had them here in New York, and they were basically useless. Had a front wheel bearing go on my Chevy Suburban. All GWC would pay for was a "light duty" bearing. Not acceptable at all. I tow a 4,000 pound camper. My mechanic said it would fail in 100 miles of towing. I had to pay the difference of $108 for a standard duty bearing plus the $100 deductible. I won't use GWC again. Best wishes.

I own an auto repair shop there are some aftermarket warranty companies that are actually really good but most are garbage. A person buys a used car with 100k miles on it then 6 months later the engine blows up and the warranty company denies the claim because the engine has sludge from the previous owner not doing oil changes at the proper times. The warranty documentation has a disclaimer that allows them to not pay it will say something like lack of maintenance. It should be illegal for them to do that because there is no way to know unless you take the engine apart
@jamesrader33292 жыл бұрын
I've heard the same thing from a few people they may cover the engine but not what's inside
@vamboroolz16123 жыл бұрын
It’s all probability......You are paying commission and profit all the way down the line. The actual percentage of your premium that is put aside to pay for repairs is around 12%, the rest is used up in profit and commission. If you think that is a good deal then go for it. Some people will come out of extended warranties having paid in way less than they got back, but those cases are extremely rare,( they have to be for the selling of the warranty to make financial sense). Because the companies have to pay out big to some customers they have to make sure the average customer gets back way less than that 12% of their premium). Other thing the main dealer extended warranties try to make you do is to go to the dealer for all servicing. Those services are way expensive and are also propped up with telling customers they need extra work doing that simply doesn’t need done,( the extra work is also way over priced). With that in mind, I will take the risk and I will use a good independent garage I can trust.

Years go I had a Tablet and it would not turn on so I called the warranty company and they said it wasn't covered.. then I asked what was covered and she said 'programming issues'. So I waited a couple of months, looked up programming issues that the tablet could possibly have and I called them up and told them my 'problem' Sure enough, the person on the phone said it wasn't covered and they only covered hardware issues. So I called person out, explaining that a couple of months ago I had a software issue and was told they only covered hardware, now they are flip flopping.

I used to work for a car dealership as a technician. These aftermarket car warranty companies are the worst. Our dealership would push these on people, and it would infuriate me to no end. The best warranty you can buy is through the vehicle manufacturer of the vehicle you are buying. Remember this, the vehicle manufacturers have other ways of making money. Through new/used car sales, service department and lease deals. These aftermarket warranty companies strictly make their money off the sale of the warranty. Think about that. I see people commenting on this video saying, "just put the money aside for what you are going to pay them for the warranty". The cost of the warranty itself is nowhere near what some repair bills could cost. Have you priced a new or remanufactured engine or transmission for today's vehicles. Better sit down before they tell you.

@@Capcoor the guy is lying. 15 years as a transmission mechanic here. It is impossible to have a transmission AND engine fail at the same time. The trans always fails first and when it fails to engage a gear (aka the transmission "dies" or locks up), the engine just idles because theres no gear for the engine to push to power the drivetrain. The Mercedes especially has a fail-safe that prevents any damage to the engine from the transmission bc it shuts off the engine automatically. Mercedes engines are bulletproof but their trans aren't good after 80k miles.
