Driver's View Tram 75 City to Vermont South. Part 1 to Camberwell Depot

I posted this in part 2, but I thought I should post this in part 1 the previous tram parked right next to this one at the depot stop. So do passengers just step from one tram to the other with both tram doors lined up? How often does this happen?

Glad you liked it. I left the job in 1994 but can still ‘talk shop’ with current drivers so keep up to date to some degree with changes etc. As for becoming a tram driver, it may be a good idea to chat to a few drivers at a terminus, tell them about your ambition, and ask them what they do and don’t like about the job. Some may not want to chat, but others will. Good luck!

The track along Bridge Road to the Yarra River was a part of the first cable tram line in Melbourne. Bridge Road between Punt Road and Church Street was a bad bottelneck back in die 70st.

I had forgotten about that inner part of the route being the first cable car line. I don’t think much has been done to relieve traffic congestion in that street, although some new parallel freeways probably take away a lot of the traffic now.

First caption states " just west of Swanston Street". Should this read " east of Swanston Street? From memory the Forum is corner of Russell at Flinders.

@@tressteleg1 Love your videos my friend. I still have not seen a route 3 in entirety. 3A yes but not 3. 3A misses some of the interesting parts of 3.

The only difference between 3 and 3a is that at weekends the 3 diverts via Luna Park to carry extra traffic to the Saint Kilda beach area. They only missing a bit is roughly 1 km between Saint Kilda Junction and Carlisle Street. That section has been covered in the route 67 video to Carnegie.

@@tressteleg1 Many thanks. I must look at 3a again. Of course I have complete confidence in what you say. I have ridden 3 and 67 and I had the feeling that the section I refer to was not covered by the 3a - it had a lot of bends in it. I'm from NSW so you have to forgive me. Cheers.

I think it may be the other way around. 3a does twists and turns as deviates via Luna Park. Additionally many Melbourne routes look much the same as each other, so it’s easy to get confused with them if only an occasional visitor. Well as you saw they both came from different city streets. Whether the timetablers make any effort to space them apart on sections of common street, I don’t know, but if they do it takes only a couple of extra red lights to muck up the spacing.

I last drove in 1994. I just mount the camera on the screen beside the driver. The 2 B1 trams were retired several years ago so only B2s remain.

Unfortunately not. With close supervision, cameras etc I can’t even get a ‘sly drive’ for myself these days.

Interesting but very pedestrian without traffice light priority. Must cost many man days in a year!

Yes, it wastes a lot of time but to date traffic light programmers have resisted any attempts to give trams immediate traffic light priority anyway. Successive governments don’t seem interested in the idea either. Probably they are too scared of upsetting motorists and losing votes if they did so. It’s really quite pathetic. Something like seven minutes was edited out of that video, but of course some time has to be allowed for passengers to get on and off.
