Well...he actually didn't change that much when you would've followed him from his early karting days, where he also was pretty dominant in the end. When you do not have one of the fastest vehicle/engine combination on the grid, you simply have to race differently to stand out and pick your chances. When you are new you have to be ruthlessly clear in how you battle on track, earn your spot, and the risks involved doing that are valid as long as you don't have a chance on a championship. You go for successes and exposure by finding the limits on almost everything. He did that very well imo. Even to a level where they had to change several rules to stop him and of course others of exploiting the gaps in existing rules. Once circumstances changed Max changed his approach. Interesting analysis, but I have to admit there is some contradiction. You mentioned Max was earlier on the brakes and better at exit, however the telemetry chart at 5:53 shows Max as having a huge gap at the breaking zone at quadrants 4/5 and 7,8,9. He carries more speed for longer, then is hard on the binders, with similar exits. What is it I am missing in the analysis? Old school racer once told me anyone can step on the gas, it's a matter of who can step on the brakes later...;)-
@rientsdijkstra4266 Жыл бұрын
Reality is that for real top performers there is no single simple story that lets itself be summarized in a video for the layman (like me) like this. The real top level athletes (and that goes for any sport, from golf to F1 racing and any other technical sport that you can think of) can and will analyse every situation on its own attributes and be able to make precise calculations for that specific situation, and even more, for every situation connected to the next (set of) situations: corners are series of events and a strategy that is optimal for a specific corner may not be optimal in general because the optimal speed or line through one corner may put the car in a disoptimal position for the next corner or the after that, etc. etc. In other words to be really fast decisions must be made in chains. Everything ties together and (at the very highest level) simple one size fits all solutions do not exist. This is also why the really exceptional drivers or athletes like Schumacher and Senna and Max are always very smart people: they simply can process more information and therefore make better decisions, and give better feedback and instructions to their race engineers. PS. Scott Mansel already hinted at this when he told that in the last corner before the finish Max actually does brake very late and carries more speed into the corner, because in that specific case the exit speed is not so important, given the short distance to the finish line.

Braking when straight means more rolling for the tyres to dissipate heat into brakes, if turning when braking, you end up with slight "drifting", which dissipate heat into the tyres Excess heating causes wear, for brakes VS for tyres is the same, but brakes can dissipate heat into the air from the cooling system, so it reduces wear that way. Late braking usually means ongoing braking whilst starting the turn, meaning that the front tyres are loaded on momentum and trying to turn on them will cause them to heat up and wear faster Early braking usually means that there's less braking whilst on the turn, so less loading on the front to cause excessive heating on the tyres, and the car's momentum is balanced on both front and rear wheels when turning, so less excess heating and wear Also, early braking means more heat dissipated into the brakes than into the tyres, allowing the tyres to be used for accelerating rather than braking It's better to use the tyres to accelerate because it is rolling friction rather than static friction when turning. All late braking drivers will suffer from this issue, getting cornering speed at the expense of their tyres early on, and then when the tyres are worn, not able to make the fast cornering later on. Tyres should be prioritised for accelerating over cornering rather than being forced to do both.

The thing is Max requires a car with sharpy front end that works every time but this comes with a tricky rear end that hurts Sergio's confidence. Checo prefers a more balanced front and rear end. That's the reason why Red Bull's second drivers have not been able to match Max's pace. Bcs Red Bull produce cars that suit his style way too heavily. But when you have a close title fight it's a big disadvantage in the WCC like in 2021. It's like wearing someone else's shoes and trying to match him. That's a big advantage in a WDC fight but it will hurt you in the WCC bcs when you have a title fight this close as last year you need your second driver to do well.

@@PDXmerckx oh yeo i forgot that. But at the start of the season Red Bull had a pretty good front end with stable rear end that Checo then could work better with the car. But since they introduced upgrades that made even sharpier the front end and this came with the rear end being loose which has been hurting Checo's confidence. It's just different driving style. But since Max is Red Bull's best chance to win championships so they should build a car around his style so it makes sense but as i said when you have a title fight like last year you need your second driver to do well. Bcs right now Checo is wearing Max's shoes and is trying to match him which is very hard.
@sultanoftippoo38572 жыл бұрын
It isn’t complicated. The reason Max is faster than his team mates (after Riciardo) and Hamilton was faster than his team mates is they are able to adapt their driving styles to new cars/new regulations better than their team mates as the season progresses. Also as the season progresses, drivers like Max/Lewis are able to provide feedback to their engineers that demonstateably improves performance better than their team mates hence it looks like the car is built around Max/Lewis’s driving style (which in part is the case). The end result is typically a driver/car package that emerges and is dominant for a period of time until the regulations change - Schumacher/Ferrari, Vettel/Red Bull, Hamilton/Mercedes, and now Verstappen/Red Bull.

Because 1. he's very quick; 2. maximizing Verstappen's potential is the goal of the entire team including Perez (even if he disagrees... "but ok"). Sergio's strategy is usually dictated not by where he needs to be to win, but where Verstappen needs him to be in order to hinder Ferrari (or whoever is in contention). We've just seen this at Spa. That's how Red Bull has been operating at least since the late 2000s. We've seen a similar story with the likes of Vettel and Schumacher, who later failed to replicate anything similar to such a dominance within a different team that doesn't operate the same way.
@aesir1ases642 жыл бұрын
Schumacher was 40 years old and out of the sport for 3 years, the man had no fire in him anymore. Vettel would dominate if he had a great car but Ferrari was always behind Mercedes, just compare Vettel and Kimi when they were together. Btw, Mercedes did the same with Hamilton and Bottas, used the latter as nothing more than a pawn for Lewis results, when Hamilton had good team mates he never dominate as well, just look how he is performing badly under the pressure of Russell.

Inasmuch as I have nothing but respect for Verstappen's overwhealming lead, a much deserved position he and Red Bull earned through merit, it is a disappointment that this very season, meant to bunch up the cars after the changes FIA established for drivers to race closer to each other, we are seeing another season like Schumacher 2000 thru 2004, or Vettel 2010 thru 2013, and Hamilton 2014 thru 2020 (yes, yes, Rosberg somewhere in the middle). In the end of the day, seasons like this get very boring, unless you are a fan of the winning driver.
@Senny_V2 жыл бұрын
It always happens when there is an entire new design principle coming into play - some teams were always going to nail the regulations this year better than others, but there is a decent hope that it'll be ironed out in the coming years. The cost cap helps a bit with that process I believe, because the team ahead can't extend its lead as monumentally as Merc used to since the start of the hybrid era. I guess it remains to be seen just how close things will become in the coming seasons

PU is worth .2/lap as per Honda. Merc gained almost .5/lap last year, like Brazil. Last year the Merc was the lowDF/drag car, RB was the high df/high drag car.
