While I get that just because someone indicates you don't HAVE to give them the space, I often find people not doing so solely because of that (and not because of any safety, visibility or space considerations of their own) is just unbelievably petty. They "Why should I? I don't have to!" is such a stinking attitude, and you come across it everywhere from all types of people.

Because if you let someone in you are at a very high and incredibly serious risk of arriving at your destination anything up to 5 seconds later. And that's not to mention the massive denting your ego takes. If you let someone in you have to spend the rest of your journey knowing all the other road users think you're a right mug. Much better to turn off Classic FM, put in GBNews and start angrily closing that space. You'll feel much better in no time.

That signal from the Audi was very late (I know, astonishing that there was one at all... But), if they'd been signalling as the driver of the cam car was on the approach, not almost on top of them, there'd probably have been a better chance of cam car dude allowing them into that space.

The accident with the van was at the junction of Rutherglen Main St and Stonelaw Road near Glasow. When eastbound traffic has the green light the southbound traffic has a left filter onto Main st. However, it's a full set of lights (as opposed to a single green arrow) and I have seen many near misses as drivers see the red changing to red/amber and take off not realising it's the left turn only that's being released. I've often thought it's a poor design. Easing traffic flow certainly but at what cost.

At around 5:16 with the oncoming wrong side car. I've read that this is fairly common in the Scottish Highlands with tourists from other countries. Apparently the authorities have placed "Drive on the Left" signs (though not sure if it's in different languages) as well as arrows on each side of the road to show the correct direction of travel. One of the greatest dangers with all this is after leaving a layby or viewing point, especially if a tourist uses such an area on the right hand side of the road, where the tendancy might be to pull out and carry on via the right hand side in a moment of forgetfulness.
@ArminGrewe4 ай бұрын
Yes, happens not only in the Highlands, but pretty much everywhere outside of the cities. In particular with people who brought their left hand drive car over from the continent, less likely with a right hand drive rental car as that will more likely "remind" you which side you should be on (as you should be sitting in the middle of the road). I know of a place on Islay where they added arrows on the road after an accident happened there for exactly that reason, tourist leaving a place on to a bendy road with little traffic, leading to a head on collision.
@kevinmartin80884 ай бұрын
Happens in Australia too and popular tourist areas need those signs, yet we don't have owners bringing their cars from anywhere. Well a few self imports from the USA, usually classic tanks, but the owners have paid a lot of money to buy, so likely to be careful!

I've seen a couple of British drivers do this in Germany and France. Quiet rural road, no visual clues, you pull out of a filling-station or wayside cafe and automatically take up the left lane. Perhaps someone at Dover ought to be dishing out "keep left" stickers to foreign drivers to be placed on the bottom of windscreens.

I've been "that foreign driver", though not in the UK. I got my licence in Norway, then went to study in New Zealand. That said, I had my worst moments after returning to Norway...😅

Anyhow, I just wanted everyone to know I'm still very much part of Ashley's channel, just that I haven't been commenting on the excellent content as much as I usually do. I learnt something new yesterday and thought I’d share it with you all, if you’re not sure what a thick red line next to the kerb at a bus stop means, it means exactly the same thing as a thick yellow line, it’s just showing that it’s part of a red route, it means other vehicles are prohibited from stopping, only buses can stop, private hire vehicles can’t stop at 'bus stop clearways' marked with a wide yellow line by the kerb, on red routes both taxis and private hire vehicles can’t stop at bus stops marked with a wide red line by the kerb.
@kenbrown28084 ай бұрын
in the US, the kerbs are often color coded. yellow means no parking, blue means only people with handicap placards may park, red means fire engine access, and green means read the instructions. we also have signs in existence that say "no stopping" which means just what it says. nobody may even stop to let a passenger get out.
@WayneTulip-zm9gw4 ай бұрын
Very similar to here in the uk, we have white zigzag lines on the approach and exit of pedestrian crossings to help drivers identify that it’s a pedestrian crossing, the left white zigzag means no parking, the right white zigzag means no overtaking, we have yellow zigzag lines found at entrances and exits of schools, hospitals, fire stations, police stations and ambulance stations, these are no stopping clearways, a single yellow line running along the road next to the kerb means no parking during the days and times shown on the time plate, double yellow lines running along the road next to the kerb means no parking at any time 24/7, a single yellow loading tick on the edge of the kerb means no loading during the days and times on the time plate, double yellow loading ticks on the edge of the kerb means no loading at any time 24/7, a single red line running along the road next to the kerb means no stopping during the days and times on the time plate (which is funny because how are you supposed to stop to read the sign if you’re not allowed to stop!? 😂), double red lines running along the road next to the kerb means no stopping at all for any reason 24/7, then we have no stopping clearways which are found at some bus stops and at some taxi ranks, a thick wide broad yellow line at a bus stop or at a taxi rank means only buses or taxis can stop there, other vehicles are prohibited from stopping there, however, private hire vehicles cannot stop at 'bus stop clearways' marked with a wide yellow line by the kerb but taxis can, a thick wide broad red line means exactly the same thing as a thick wide broad yellow line but because it’s red it’s saying that it’s part of the red route, on red routes both taxis and private hire vehicles cannot stop at bus stops marked with a wide red line by the kerb, then we have blue lines, which are only found in Nottingham, a parking permit system is operated on the NPEL private roads, double blue lines running along the road next to the kerb means no parking for any vehicles, a single blue line running along the road next to the kerb means parking is allowed only for vehicles displaying a valid permit (or a genuine visitor’s note) issued to the property immediately abutting the section of blue line where the vehicle is parked, I had a disagreement with another driving instructor yesterday on his video, there was a stationary queue of traffic in front of him and there was a bus stop clearway (a bus stop with a thick wide yellow line running along the road next to the kerb) and he stopped before the bus stop and he said this is where you shouldn’t wait, he then drove onto the bus stop and he said this is where you should wait in a stationary queue of traffic, he said it’s ok for me to do this because the bus can only approach from behind so I’m not blocking any buses, I said to him it doesn’t matter, I said to him he’s wrong, I said to him the bus stop has a thick wide yellow line which means no vehicle is allowed to stop there, only buses and taxis can stop there, there is a small no stopping clearway road sign on the small sign and it says “no stopping except buses”, I then said to him you’re allowed to stop on a clearway for reasons outside of your control if you literally have no other option but to stop but this wasn’t outside of his control, he should have been planning ahead, he should have noticed the stationary queue of traffic and he should have waited before the bus stop and only moved forwards when he could clear the area without stopping, you’d do the same if you saw yellow zigzag lines on the road.

Re the very first clip and the reference to filtering motorbikes. This is something I always keep in mind and look out for whenever I'm in slow moving / stationary traffic and as a result, try to position myself within my lane with this in mind. One of those clips (overtaking right turn), reminded me of my Driving Instructor's business partner. Girl out for her first lesson, does the little drive back, turns right on a country road and hesitates with the actual turn. The few cars behind are a dream, very patient. The 40 ton gravel truck approaching behind would say later that he thought they were all parked (whadafk!?) and accordingly overtook. So, the instructor is in one footwell, the student is in the other ... they were generally fine, but the back seat and subframe snapped in two. Feelgood ending: After checking up on her, he actually asked "Do you want your next lesson, or do you want to wait?" Her reply was apparently along the lines, of course, that is a rare event and I'll see it next time. :)

Get out of a car on a motorway hard shoulder & it shocks how fast & noisy it actually is - you suddenly feel very vulnerable. Others, just don't see hazards in the way we do: their own self-preservation mechanism is 'misaligned'. Why would anyone risk their OWN safety, even if they don't care about other people?!

It's mirror- signal- maneuver. A lot of people do it start maneuver - signal - check if it's clear. If your signal is on then you should know it's clear. As the Audi signal came on as I was approaching I'd likely have checked my rear mirror and hit the brakes as hard as safe, balancing out the potential for a rear collision with the Audi pulling out into my path. When my hands are safely available to facilitate a polite "I'm here in case you hadn't seen me!" toot on the horn, and give them space to change lanes if possible. I have come to the view that the new rules on the hierarchy of road users is now meaningless as without any credible way of enforcement there are no consequences. If anything, I think all too many drivers are now taking any perceived opportunity to get past cycalists to avoid being stuck behind for longer.

I find it interesting the difference in attitudes towards mobile phone use. In the UK it's very shunned upon as it should be, however on a trip to Eastern Europe in some countries I notice 1/3 on their mobile in stationary, rolling traffic or when it's freely flowing.

6:19 thats the road past the fourstones paper mill just before the rail crossing. Its a nasty little narrow kink that used to have no center line, indicating that it was only wide enough for one car. The council have recently painted a centre line encouraging this situation with two cars trying yo go through at the same time. The oncoming car in this clip actually has to cross the centre to avoid hitting the curb and wall on their side.

Hi ash. Bit unrelated but seeing the clip in wales reminded me. I saw a news article the other day calling for road signs and markings in wales to be updated so there is a clear distinction between the english text and the welsh text, this being because dyslexic people may have trouble finding out where welsh ends and english begins. I'm curious whether you agree that this could be improved or whether road users should ideally be able to identify by the road layout what its supposed to say. EG "SLOW" and "STOP" are fairly self explanitory based on the road layout. It could be written in Chinese and I'd still know which one its supposed to be

I think that both clips of 'Instructors' in your post were more likely to be PDI's rather than qualified ADI's. I'm pretty sure I noticed a 'pink' license on the first clip & on the last clip it was a Red Driving School, who have a propensity to use a large number of PDI's.

What about the Ford Focus at 10:10. I mean, we don’t know how many cars were behind the viewer, presumably a good lot considering the cars skipping earlier in the clip, and the Focus cuts right back into the left lane ahead of the viewer, proper cheeky stuff

In the first clip, at first I thought his positioning was fairly good. It looked like he was keeping to the right hand side of his lane to allow people behind to access the slip road. Obviously when he maintained that position well beyond the entry to the slip road and started to drift even further right, it became clear that he was distracted. Hopefully his pupils don't pick up his bad habits.

It does annoy the heck out of me when I'm driving down a quiet road with parked cars and one of them just throws on a signal to say they have checked it's clear to maneuver and intend to do so immediately even though they would be pulling out into my path. They rarely actually pull out, but it shows they don't understand how signals are intended to be used. This being different to when it's heavy traffic and you find the biggest gap you can and put your signal on hoping that the driver behind will be kind and make space for you... Also known as being a good driver.

My first instructor was taking bookings on his mobile and writing the bookings into a A4 calendar whilst I was in control of the car. I should have reported him to be fair,but I’m not that kind of person. But that said he could still be doing the same today some four years later (he’s still instructing)

Hi. I've just begun watching some of your videos and some of the issues on roundabouts prompted a thought. I have a house in Spain and drive a lot up and down the east coast in various provinces. Every single roundabout has a speed limit of 40Kph (say 25 Mph). I have never found that this causes me any delays in journey times but it makes every roundabout (even the ones in cities near motorways) a great deal easier and less stressful than UK. Just near my UK house is a largish roundabout where 40Mph is not uncommon for cars going round. Just wondered about your thoughts.

Interesting one at the roundabout with the Audi. The police car at the front is also indicating to turn right, but stays in the correct lane (the same lane that the Audi was in). Maybe the driver of the camera car assumed the Audi was just doing the same, and wasn't aware that the Audi wanted to change lanes?

I really don't think the cammer at 1:40 needed to hold back. While the groundwork for this situation was being laid out before the cammer stopped, this situation unfolded long AFTER the cammer stopped. The cammer had a clear path and opportunity to go ahead and turn left at the beginning with no danger. It's what I would've done. This excessively hesitant behavior just breeds undue fearful driving and frustrates others behind. It was safe when cammer first approached the junction and basically just sat there and waited for the situation to start unfolding.

2:03 - this is why we should not teach pedestrians they have "priority". Those rule changes do not apply over here thankfully. I will not be teaching my daughter that cars will stop and not run her over. I will teach her to NEVER approach a vehicle manoeuvring, especially in reverse where the driver has many blind spots. If you WANT pedestrians to have priority, you need to TRAIN them to understand what it means. I do not see the government funding a "Pedestrian Proficiency Program" and insisting that all pedestrians over the age of 12 read the highway code, do a theory test, a practical test and get a license to be a pedestrian. Then and ONLY then can you empower them with decision maknig responsibilities on the roads where lives and livelyhoods depends on strict adherence to rules.

What's peoples opinions on lane changes when you indicate with a good deal of space behind you, traffic is 30mph, there's sufficient space to begin your move but by the second indicator flash, Twatty McTwatterson in the lane you require starts to speed up to close the gap (often breaking the speed limit to do so)? It's odd that I've had that happen twice just this last week, but the only notable example prior to that was a good few years ago.

Had an ADI yesterday swing out in front of me on a dual carriageway (Was about to pass him as he was only doing 40 and I was doing the limit) and then sped off at more like 70 (this was a 50 limit section of the A406 north circular in London). Sorry to say but I think the standard of Driving instructors is in serious decline; it's no wonder standards in this country have slipped so badly.

Disagree with you on the Audi - look at the police car in the left lane, a few cars in front, which is also indicating to turn right. Both lanes there go right (A36 indicated on the road markings at 6:41, which is the route that both police car and viewer take), and the viewer probably expected the Audi to follow the same path as the police car. Instead the Audi veered across a couple of lanes and seemed to make a late decision to go all the way around. Nothing came of it because the viewer was far enough back to avoid the collision, it was poor by the Audi.

in your second one, while the driver did very poorly, it is also very poor performance to go behind a vehicle that has its reverse lights on. and to my mind, it should be illegal to make a car without putting the indicators, brake lights, and reverse lights all in the same cluster.
