Great video of your journey. One thing I have always liked about you and your videos is you stay humble and the quality is excellent. Yes You make upgrades to your Jeeps that most of us can’t afford but you are humble about it and are not flashily like look what I have now. We have a jeep wrangler Rubicon jk 4door lifted on 40 tires Dana 60 floating axels front and rear lockers hemi engine and 8 speed automatic transmission. We get between 12 to 13 miles per gallon at 75 to 85 mph here in texas.and across country trips unless we hit a bunch of head wind.no vibrations or wobbling either.

I used to live just north of Chattanooga, TN which was about 15 minutes east of the Eastern/ Central time zone border. People that lived in one time zone but worked in another (or traveled a lot to another time zone) would typically set their clocks to the time zone they worked/ traveled in and lived their life as if the were in that time zone. All others would just do the math in their head those times they had to drive across. There was one time I had to drive to a park about an hour away and it was in Central Time. I left my house at 12pm, drove an hour and arrived at the park at 12pm. Time travel is awesome!

I agree with your "I am liking the 3.6 w/8spd combo" comment. With as much power engines are making these days... that thing is making the same amount of HP as big block V8s used to. Less torque though but with a better curve. Here is what helps that out though... you have the 8spd gearbox! It is a torque multiplier. I have a 3.6 w/8spd in my Chevy Colorado and it has been nothing short of AMAZING. I would not mind a re-gear though. Not because it is lacking power for towing or anything... but because it will take strain off of the ENTIRE drive train and make it last longer. I want to keep this puppy for at least 250k miles. Ergonomically it has been my most favorite vehicle I have ever owned.

That toll road is crazy. We have many here in Texas but most are on video that scans you license plate then mails you a bill. The rest have an attendant that, again, will bill ya by mail. Last time I was through the Ohio, Illinois, Indiana area, I managed to avoid the tolls.

Toll roads were the worst part about driving across country. Being from Nevada as well, we had never experienced toll roads. Talk about highway robbery! Some of the worst roads I have ever driven on I had to pay to drive on...🤦🏼‍♂️

Jeep looks great, great idea to stop by the Jeep facility!!!! Just picked up my Jeep yesterday from the shop had my 4.5 evo overland stage 4 plus installed notice the steering could start using some upgrades, it drives straight and doesn’t wander or anything just seems like it could be tighter.... first big Jeep build for me hopefully you can point me in the right direction... As far as steering upgrades I went with yeti xd drag link what should I start going after next, tie rods? Maybe I just have to get used to driving a big lifted Jeep? Idk any help would be appreciated keep up the good work !!!

After Mel broke his Yeti drag link on the Rubicon, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. We're running Synergy steering components and have been quite happy with it. That said, what you're probably feeling is pretty normal for a solid axle Jeep with drag link and tie-rod. You won't be getting the same kind of tight feel that you would with an IFS running a rack and pinion steering.

Hey, just curious are you 100% sure the tazer is correcting your miles and not just the mph calculation? I ask because I think I remember you saying your JL went down to 15 on 37s, and it seems like everyone is getting the tazer at the same time as 37s or bigger. I have the manual so haven’t gotten it yet and running 37s on Hutchison rock monsters and 2.5 lift getting 15.5 if I’m nice but usually 15, which calculates to around 17mpg.

The worst thing about flying into Chicago is dealing with all their toll roads. One time after being home for about 4 weeks I get a ticket in the mail. I got stuck in the wrong lane and went through the toll booth and did not have one of those doohickies in the rental car that pays for the toll.

Going in tomorrow to finally test drive Rubicon with 40s and evo 4.5 lift. If it goes well and I like it I'll order me one and have same thing done. I'll be keeping mine all stock otherwise unless it also needs gears. If keeping stock 44 axles what gears would u go too if needed

With 40's? Safe to assume you're not gonna wheel your Jeep? The ratio you'd want with 40's is 5.38 but I personally wouldn't recommend anything higher than 5.13 in a Dana 44. If you do plan on wheeling your Jeep, you really should be looking to upgrade your axles to Dana 60's.

Yes, with 37's, you can keep your factory dana 44's and they'll be more than enough to get the job done.

Finally got to test drive it today with 4.5 evo plus stage 3 overland lift and 40s. I cant believe how well it drives. Trying to make deal on ordering truck if they can get to price like the dealer in idaho. If not I'll order from them. I appreciate everything this is huge deal for me at 56 and planning on it being with me for hopefully till I ain't here. Eddie can u tell me who powder coated your wheels? I would like exact same ones they are best looking ones I have seen with aluminum rim and bronze or dark bronze whatever that color is.

We can see that around the 5:00 minute mark, you are doing 3,300 rpm at 83 mph and, shortly thereafter, 3,900-4,000 rpm as the tranny downshifts at essentially the same vehicle speed. The 3.6L, with its hp rating, needs this rotational velocity to maintain the heavy JT at that speed. A Gen 5 non-blown LT (like an LT1) coupled to a 8L90 can easily push your vehicle down the road at, say, 70 mph at 1,800-2,200 rpm and deliver improved mpg in the process. I also note the ambient temp at 39 degrees F is doubtless delivering pretty high Manifold Air Density. I suspect the wind, as is typical at that latitude in Wyoming, is from the West, aiding your speed and relieving your engine a bit. Your gearing is probably right for your 3.6. 5.13 gears would probably suffice if you had an LT. With the V8, you will have better low end torque, won’t need to wind out the engine at high highway speeds, and will get significantly improved gas mileage, not only because of the characteristics of the engine itself, but because the engine will allow you to change out the gears. Great machine, great build, terrible mileage. I predict you’ll have a different power unit by next summer.

LOL - you're talking to a guy who has an LS in his JK. That said, I get what you're trying to say but the shifting you're seeing is from the fact that we were in Wyoming as in, there are hills. Some big but a lot are small. If I drove slower, my mpg was a lot better. Sure, mpg can be a bit better with a V8 but it's just a bit or at least, from what I have personally seen. The benefit of NOT going V8 is that I don't have any of the overheating or programming issues that are common with them. Of course, I may still do it by next year just has you say - who knows :)

Wayalife All good, Eddie. Unless I’m mistaken, your LS in Moby doesn’t have continuously variable valve timing, but I may be wrong. The General has improved engine efficiencies in its Gen 5 motors and improved transmission mapping. Also, the programming issues you experience in Moby (great video, by the way, of you guys in the Inyo Mountains near Saline Valley - I first drove the Inyo range 50 years ago in a CJ5) may be due to not having separate management units for the vehicle itself (the JK) and the engine (the LS) - again, I’m not sure of your set-up there. One thing I do know is having more than 50% of rated torque available at a ridiculously low 500-700 rpm in the new LT engines is hard to ignore. Be safe back East and keep the camera “rolling”!

are you skipping the 500mi diff oil change then? i've always been under the impression with ANY new gear set you replace the gear oil after about 500 mi to get rid of any metal shavings from the gears meshing together...

Stop at a grocery store man on the toll road and get yourself an ez pass. So much easier. Works all over the NE as well. Cheaper tolls too. I have one I bring to the NE when I travel.

We always build our Jeeps to ride as comfortably as possible and typically, better than stock. It's the only way we could do long drives like this. That being said, the Gladiator has an advantage being that it has a significantly longer wheel base.

All I can say is that the highways are FREE in Nevada and at least where I live, they are super smooth. Hell, our dirt highways are smoother than most of the toll roads we drove on back east.
