Having lived in India for 5 years, I have to say kudos to you for being brave enough to drive there. Not many people have the steely nerves required to do that. Every car excursion my husband and I ever took involved at least 3 near-death experiences, but after awhile it becomes normal. Remember that honking in India is actually a very sophisticated language. They are not just honking to say hello; rather, they are telling you their next move. The honking vocabulary is complex but critical to master if you want to stay safe. As far as food goes, at some point you or your husband WILL become sick with gastroenteritis, even if you only ever eat in five-star hotels. Be ready for this and get the needed treatment. Meanwhile, do not touch the street food (even wise locals don't do that) as you don't know how or where it was prepared, and be vigilant with hand washing. Keep enjoying all the sounds, smells and vivid colours India has to offer. There is no other place quite like it.

I wonder if there are no beautiful, neat, or modern, western-style areas in India? Is every side like this? Where do rich Indians live? There are generally no videos about these.
@heatherthomson4346

@@coolfinetime There are some of the most luxurious accommodations in the world in India, places where you pay between $500 and $2000 US per night for glamorous surroundings and first class service, but it's economically challenging to sustain this kind of travel for a month or more. I wish TTG would at least have lunch and a tour of one of the Taj hotels as they are truly phenomenal. If I had only a week to live I would check myself in at the Lake Palace Hotel in Udaipur.

@@coolfinetimethere are clean & modern sides of India. Ride with Gabi has a vid wherein he rode through the rich (millionaire) area of Mumbai. He also has vids of a cyber city - just see his India playlist. The Zingwi brothers also showed some malls & rich/ clean areas. TTG didn't show much because I think they were in a hurry to reach Mumbai to ship their van. Maybe the ship had to leave by a certain date.

Come on folks, the tread the globe duo are human. Based on several comments that they have made during this Indian sector, and the lack of detail other than driving, I would posit that they are experiencing culture shock (which can happen to anyone, no matter how well travelled) and also on a mission to get to Mumbai by a certain date. The fact that Marianne is an incredible driver doesn't mean that they wouldn't experience culture shock (heat, crowded environment, food, inability to talk various Indian languages at roadside eateries....it's not Malaysia or Korea etc.). Upset stomachs are also fairly common in India and if they have a deadline to meet they can't afford to get sick. Travel safe Marianne and Chris.

Absolutely love Rajasthan, have been twice. So sorry you missed the fort and beautiful blue city of Jodhpurs. Jaiselmir and the desert is a favorite of ours. It feels as though you are now in a hurry to get home, not exploring or savoring the places and relationships with people that you used to. Lots of driving, roads and modern hotels, without the direct contact with locals and culture. Missing that part ❤️❤️❤️

Totally agree Jodhpur is one of my absolute favourites in Rajasthan - there's so much to love about that city. Wandering through all the narrow alleys up to the fort with a fabulous museum I could not go on a tour without the freedom of doing it in your own time Not to be able wander around marketplaces - have a chai, or a speciality of that area and have conversations with the locals is such a great loss. So many stories that one could hear and information learnt will never be realised in a journey that simply is one the road from one hotel to the next. I'm a Brit living in India and absolutely love it - it's all the reasons I've listed is why I'm here. It's a country of such diversity and so rich in culture and talking to the locals, staying in their guesthouses move the travel to a journey - not simply highway after highway

Yep it is really tricky to explain in short videos the complexities of this kind of expedition and how the TIP, roads, visas, route changes and weather windows have made this even tougher to make the deadlines to get back to the UK for the Charity Dinner to raise money for the turtle project. But as this is just the first of many challenges we hoped to go back one day to share more one day ... but now in South Africa where the heat is cooler and we are back in Trudy is the perfect crescendo to this epic challenge 😉🌺 love to the family

"Oh, how wonderful it is to see you, a foreigner, laughing at our beautiful culture and the charming quirks of our people. It's truly a delightful experience, isn't it? But don't worry, I'll laugh right back at you when I see your ridiculous van. A true KZbinr is one who can find humor in everything, especially the most mundane aspects of life. Maturity, it seems, is just a matter of age. Or maybe it's just a matter of having a sense of humor that's as dry as your van's interior."

I hope you have a chance to drive up into the mountains of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand - the foot hills of the Himalayas. Blinding natural beauty and great local people. Check weather patterns though. Get onto the smaller roads and hike into local villages. Stay a few days if you find a place you like - then India can come to you naturally. There is so much more to see than the highways and big cities. This is a great time of year to drive to Leh, Ladakh. What about crossing the border into Nepal? There are many places to cross. Check visa situation crossing over land / your van permits. India is magical if you have heaps of time to discover it.

Very interesting. I was in India, for a month, about 18 yr. ago. Traveled by private car (Toyota Land Cruiser) and driver with translator altho my friend was Indian!). Can't remember ever seeing a 4 land road except in a city or very close. Commonly, there were paved roads, two land, till we got to a small village or town. Then the paving ended, the road narrowed and bumps were notorious! It was very common to see cows, dogs, camels and even frequent elephants in the road. Trucks always had the right of way!! Was there in the dry season just as you are. Dust everyplace, even in the hotels. And, back then, I was amazed at the garbage everyplace. Seems to not have changed!! Mine was an amazing experience---which I would not repeat!!

I spent 37 years in Sendai, Japan and so really enjoyed your videos of traversing the country, and I have watched all since then, as through work I also had the opportunity to go to many countries in Asia including Thailand (about 4 months in total) and India (maybe 6 months over 35 times). The tombstone like plates on the motorway median strips are, as you guessed, to stop the glare of headlights in the opposing traffic blinding you. This is especially effective because drivers in India tend to keep their headlights on high all the time at night, no matter whether there's opposing traffic or not. Also, the way I see it is that they have two right-of-way rules: (1) the vehicle that has its nose in first has right of way; but this may be trumped by (2) the vehicle that is going at the higher speed has right of way.

I learned many decades ago while traveling in India that the reason those cows are sacred is they're worth more on the hoof than a one meal protein blast on your plate. There used to be a LOT more street people/homeless everywhere, and the cows provided free milk for yoghurt and cheeses. The poop is immediately collected and formed into patties that are slapped everywhere to dry. They then serve as fuel for all the cooking fires, because India is such an ancient culture, it was basically deforested by the time of Christ so cow patties fill a big part of the fuel gap.

Sorry to say this, but I have thoroughly enjoyed your channel since I found it when you entered Japan where i used to live. When you arrived in Kolkota, I got the sense you were overwhelmed with the difference, the poverty, squalor, and vastly different lifestyle from what you've been used to. I felt you've been wanting to push through India as quick as you are able to escape this. Sadly to the detriment of some stunning places you've appeared to miss out on ... Maybe I'm wrong but I do get the sense this isn't a country you're enjoying. Living in Africa it's a very similar lifestyle here in the west of the continent but it's also beautiful, fascinating and rewarding ❤😊

I feel the same. There is a disconnect here compared to other countries.

I see the same difference, but i think there are a few reasons that make India different. The heat and air quality does not allow sleeping in Trudy, even walking around is more difficult. They can really only park in secured hotel areas, so pit stops along the road are difficult. The food/ water cleanliness does not allow them to stop anywhere to get street food. It would be a big problem if they get sick.

Hi - yes I think the heat and getting sick a few times really didn't help - driving around the world it has been hard lining up weather windows, visas and routes - but we are now in SA and absolutely loving the cooler weather and being able to get back into Trudy and camp out !! Vanlife India was one of the toughest due to the heat (and being a kidney donor our health has been at the top of the priority list !!) Kind regards Marianne

@@TREADtheglobe You did a great job in India. It was too hot. I’m glad, you are safe in SA, is that Saudi Arabia? I feel sorry for Indians in that part of the world. It’s too hot for humans.

I think because they started from the most overwhelming places. West Bengal, Bihar and some regions of UP are the most densely populated regions of India and also some of the poorest region. And also it gets really hot in summer. Every state in India would differ in language and also the view outside. India is a very vast country with some regions having freezing temperatures and some being dessert while some tropical.

Kudos to you for trying to drive in India. I once tried to drive someone else's car in Bangladesh the cars handbrake didn't work and the foot brake was worn out. I almost went into a big ditch with a pond with the car. Thanks to the other person who was sitting in the passenger seat who intervened and turned my steering wheel. After that I vowed to never drive someone else's car in Bangladesh without checking if their car's handbrake and foot brake worked or not. It's not like in England.

I love the driving photography, especially when we see off down the side streets, or into the goings-on on the forecourts. As a child I was driven around in Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa ( we lived in Lusaka, Zambia). And a tandem ride to northern France recently -mostly on the back -held similar joys.

I love your videos and enjoy watching the passing scenery. The bird you saw in Johdpur, I think, is called a lapwing. We have them here in South Africa. Could the large lawn be a polo field? Rajasthan is my favourite part of India.

Great to see this video Marianne and Chris. . I've seen other videos at youtube about India and this one is very different because you are driving through India yourselves in a campervan. If you have time look out for Gabriel traveller's video's about India at youtube. He has been there many times but I like your videos as much as his. I'm gonna watch all your videos from India. Enjoy your voyage and many thanks!!

It’s school time on Saturdays as you saw in Jaipur and you’re right the barriers on the road between the two lanes are so one doesn’t get the glare from the opposite direction as you drive. The traffic lights are part time and so when you stopped in Jaipur others passed by.

04:47, this is very near to my home.. like literally 2-3 kms... good to see you guys here :) PS: i think that lane is meant for Big buses(i think mainly government ones), and we call it BRTS(bus road transport system) lane. that being said , you see other vehicles who want to reach quicker to their destination in it. but i always avoid it as per the law. earlier they didnt have much checking, but now they have traffic police monitoring i think.
