996 Turbo without a doubt. People can hate the headlights all they want, but you can't deny that it's the only 911 without VW Beetle headlights.

Beautiful vid quality Jay. The more raw 996 Turbo for me, the 996s are a solid everyday, yet comfortable all weather road fighters. The genius designer created the beautiful 996 Turbo, whilst retaining some of the old Porsche character along with the new. (I actually owned a new 997 S for a few years) It's difficult to explain, but I started to be inspired by the older 996 design. I also felt that on driving they were not so dislocated from the driver like the newer cars. I realized that the 996 Turbo is one of the last raw urban icons with plenty of the Porsche analogue character still and in keeping with the essences of the past. That red 996 turbo is transcendent.

The Stig commented about his 997.2 Turbo "I just remember thinking that I would never need anything faster than this". But he's the Stig. That said, 996.2 Turbos being underappreciated are a relative bargain. And as you said, "414HP is as fast as you'd ever want to go". Personally my ideal car if I had the money would be a 2019 VW Golf R Special Edition released in Australia which had an Akrapovic exhaust, premium Dynaudio sound system, lighter Pretoria 19" rims and the bigger European cross-drilled brakes. With a mild Stage 1 tuning kit and about a dozen or so supporting mods, that car is capable of 370BHP and around 480NM of torque. But the Golf is 100kg lighter than the 996.2 Turbo, has 4WD, a faster DSG gearbox, and would come in at about half the cost of the Porsche. The Golf would also cheaper to service.

I am an absolut fan of turbos, as a 68 kid I grew up like you with the first 1975 turbo. Everybody loved it. But now I bought a 996.2 GT3 CS. When I pushed it to 8000 on a test drive, I fell in love with that engine and had to buy that car. What a joy to drive! Big plus: on our twisty roads in Switzerland it is good to have a car, that is not so wide. The latest 911 are too big for narrow B-roads. Very funny because I never was a big fan of the 996, but it ages pretty well and the sleek silhouette is classy.

All of the cars you are talking about here have a nimble footprint since they were designed before expansion of the wheelbase and the overall size of the 991's. Frankly I don't think you can go wrong with any of the cars you have on this list

I spent a part of my weekend on a fun, spirited drive with about a dozen various other Porsches. Including a 997 turbo. It was amazing to see all those cars wring it out around the corners. But I gotta say, I had no less of a smile on my face with my “lowly” 996.2 Carrera than anyone else in the group. And I was not left in the dust, either. The base 911 Carrera keeps up with even the 500hp monsters on most roads. My vote, with price considered, is the 996.2 Carrera.

Can you please help me understand why a 996 turbo AND 996 4s? Did you get one first and decided you want another for something different? What other options did you consider? I just got a 996.2 turbo and already want a 996 or 997 c2 or 4s too for some reason.
@dmdcarrera11 ай бұрын
@sherparoyale I'm drawn to 996 and 997 for different reasons. 997.2 c4s is very different from 996tt in good ways if you're looking for variety when your taste for these cars is narrow, if you know what I mean. 997.2 is more refined, feels much more "luxurious", is about as reliable as a mezger, and becomes unique when considering pdk and direct injection. Though, personally, I always end up favoring the more basic/focused layout of the 996, the rear end of the 996 4s is in my opinion, one of the nicest. It sounds much better than most 911s I've ever heard. It feels more pure to me in relation to other water cooled cars. I just like it more.

Thanks Martin. Actually, I couldn’t really see much of a difference. Porsche has these cars so well set up that I think you’d need to be going much faster than we were or be on much rougher roads to tell one from the other. My car was seal grey, I'd love one in Lapis blue. As for the 997, I would consider a turbo one but I think the .1 might be the one to have - lovely Mezger engine but the 997 interior. I'm interested to hear why you think the DFI engine trumps the mighty Mezger - just a power issue? I used to pretend I was in a race car in my 996 mainly due to that race-derived engine!! Is the DFI as robust as the Mezger too? I think a tiptronic / PDK suits the character of a turbo car perfectly and would pick over a manual too! Cheers!

Interior door design vastly more interesting that 997 and later. Plastics in center also don’t show scratches while 997 is very scratch prone. Turbo n intercoolers considerably mute flat six sounds, alas, if you are at 70 and need to pass quick cannot beat Turbos, and certainly nice for touring triple digit length journeys. Interesting question that I personally answered about 5 years ago. It went like this, what attracted me to a Porsche ? It’s iconology. But what sold me? Frankly, Jeremy Clarksons hatred. And the Isle of Man episode. (There’s many more factors but I want to keep it short) Porsche 911, it was. Now which one? 996, 997. Wide body rear stance, all wheel drive, must have. My choices now: 997.1 4s or Turbo. I was told don’t ever drive a turbo if you’re considering one bc you’ll never be happy afterwards. Choice , 997.1 turbo or 997.2 turbo. At this point 997.2 turbos were 100- 120k USD. Low mi examples. So I chose 9971. Turbo for significantly less at 80-100k. A non trained eye wouldn’t recognize the diff. And the pdk was near brand new and seemed too modern and expensive. 997.1 it was, manual or Tip? I’ve had manuals in the past, but I appreciated Porsche bc it’s ability to combine sports and comfort elements. I wanted the tip all along. Cab or non Cab? Cab was a no brainer bc I grew up in convertibles. The thought was, you get alll of that, AND it’s a convertible!! Plus it’s a hard convertible, not the kind which are prone to a razor knife. So that’s it, and a puff of blue smoke! 997.1 turbo cab great vid thanks for posting

I am about to pull the trigger on a manual 996 Turbo X50 Cabriolet, but I wrestled back and forth between this and a 997 Turbo Cabriolet. The deciding factor for me is that owners such as yourself keep saying that the 996 has a more analog feel when driving. The manual 996 is the last true purist car before Porsche installed electronics for every component.

@@bobford7366 If i should advice you, the choose depends on your preferences for driving/styling/ and money ...the most 😥. X 50 996 t is I think perfect option, enough Power, and if you dont mind aesthetics of GT1 lights and interior / for me no problém fór driving pleasure / , it IS almoust the same like 997.1T. Power to weight, same Mezger engine, similar chasis, little more weight... So i agree with Jay ,that 997.1 could bee named 996.3 T. For mee the main evolution IS between 993 to 996 and another between 997.1 to 997.2, ...not between 996.2 to 997.1 ,how someone could to expect. I have never driven original 996T, and my Techart tuned 996 T one IS closer to be like GT3 ,so thats the reason why, I love ridding 996 T ,despite of more modern 997.2 PDK - each excellent, both facile, but so different like " mr jekyll and mr hyde ", because manual versus PDK. Contrast in money and achievement between 997.1T and 997.2 T lack in another motorpowerplant / Direct duel injection, variable VTG turbo - first world petrol engine /, torque vectoring , revised chasis, Dynamic motor mounts , PDK vs Tiptronic.... Its not only Porsche Tech sales promotion, but personal experience. My younger brother has almoust two years 997.1 T Tiptronic, and before I bought mine 997.2 PDK , he he said after shortly driving it ,thats another space , and if I wont buy IT , he will buy IT alone ... So thanks you brother , I am now owner because of your presonal interest 👌🧐🤟 Sorry for so many words... If gramaticaly not corect ... Greatings from heart Európa - SLOVAKIA 🥰

I have the 996 3.4 and the 996 turbo both totally different cars.. The 996 3.4 is fun ro drive without turbo and still have enough power.. And the Turbo feels heavier offcourse and you can feal it with a drive...

I appreciate the Turbo power. However, I'll keep my 58K mile 996 Gen 1, well sorted w/ Ims, etc~~~. For my driving, I love the power it has and the drivability on the street. I DO NOT need a Turbo, it's a total waste around town and for daily driving.

Ha! Good point! I need to redo all that because the market has shifted considerably! I would say, however, that the 997 prices have gone up more than the 996 and so 996 probably takes it and, for that matter, the Carrera.

Seemed you enjoyed yourself driving both but my impression is that your heart is with 996 despite the price difference etc. And in my personal opinion 996 whenever it is turbo/C2 or C4S (which I’m lucky to own) has much more character compared to 997. And this extends to the interior, front lights of a mk2 model and overall appearance on the road. I always enjoy your vids, best wishes

I just want to say i have both the turbo and the carrera from 03. day for day... prefer the carrera. the turbo wants to put me in jail. they all have foibles. the turbo will eventually throw a cooling tube. the carrera. bore scoring is most scary... and I've been there. we made lemonade. it's a 3.8 now and it's FAST. best m96/7 ive ever driven. but still not Metzger.

@@JAYREAD the Werkshop in Melbourne FL. Dan Cleary and the crew are the reason i switched from BMW a decade ago. all LN parts. some local machining work. As long as you are patient. Their engine work is excellent. They did a 2000 3.4 right before mine and a 2004 GT3 right after. Both are used at autocross and track. one of the best bits of advice for M96 at the track. replace the stock oil pan baffle. it made a large difference in my oil pressure once the lateral acceleration and rapid direction changes start. I'm hooked on the cars though. Boxsters too. it's a hoot to drive. just pulls and pulls. and it's so light. you made some great observations I thought. I am revelling in the love for the 996. the local "philes" always turned their noses up... now they're genuinely interested in the cars.

@@JAYREAD 996 just needs leather everywhere and the interior would be superior to the 997 IMO.

I would take any 997, generally, over a 996 as I prefer the looks and interior of the 997. I paid more to get the 997. However that’s the standard carrera . When it comes to the Turbo there is something about the Turbo cars which is a great leveller. I’m not sure if it’s just the slightly different styling? The engine? I wouldn’t pay the difference when it comes to the Turbo. It’s too great of difference. I would have the 996.2.
