What causes weight gain? Most people think it's all calories in calories out, but that's simplistic first order thinking. You must go deeper to the root causes of weight gain if you want to understand how to lose weight. Obesity spreads like a virus, an example of social contagion. By understanding the key role that societal norms and especially your friends play in weight gain, you can leverage this to your own advantage to lose that weight. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

I am 190 I always been 145 my whole life at one point lower than that I've gained over 50 lbs in the last 4 years and now that I am engaged I am wanting more to be healthy again. kzbin.infoUgkx5VQ5nUzHu6i0O5_u7ipyLnCz0lbsSvr0 I am not fat but I am thick and have muscle. I am very close to how you were but a lil smaller but I am so sick people making comments to me like I'm huge or like you said having shorts that used to be so cute on me and now I can't even find a pair to fit me. I used to love shopping now I don't even want to go to the store and if I do I pick the biggest size don't even try it on and deal with it. I went from size 5 to size idk because I don't even want to know the real number. I hate looking at pics of myself now or me before. thank you for your video it's time to make a change.

Four years ago my endocrinologist recommended that I get a copy of the “Obesity Code “. I’m 80 years old and I can honestly say that it has changed my life. Between your book and adopting a keto lifestyle I’ve become a different person. I’ve lost 80 lbs and kept it off for that four years. I give her credit for pointing me in the right direction, but your guidance, IF and Keto for the rest. I’ve been overweight my entire adult life and it never occurred to me that I would ever fit in size 40 slacks again let alone 34’s. My quality of life has been bettered 10 fold. God bless and keep you Dr.Fung.

@@Jackpot12 I think you've asked a great question. I have lost a fair amount of weight and have kept it off for years and when I thought about your question I concluded that the reason I still watch content like this video is because I'm always learning. As peri menopausal woman, I had difficulty loosing weight. I tried everything that had worked when I was younger: counting calories, going vegan, exercising, etc. Then a friend told me about Obesity Code, and it revolutionized my life. Yes, I lost weight, but more importantly, I was no longer a slave to my appetite. I chose when and what to eat, and then just forgot about food for the rest of the day. Did I feel hunger pangs? Yes, but I just drank some water, kept busy, and before I knew it, they were gone. The key is to stay away from sugar, processed foods and processed carbohydrates.

I don't think people like to be reminded of their failure and unfortunately, your great success probably represents that to them. Hopefully you'll gather new friends to you who aren't threatened by the fact you have your life in order. I'm also in the UK and I find it heartening that lots of mainstream media classes obesity as a major cause of T2 diabetes in most cases making it more of a lifestyle issue than an unavoidable disease that can only be treated with drugs. Hopefully we can turn it around in time with enough health education instead of just prescribing drugs.

Yes! Friends CAN make you fat - or slim! I went on holiday with two friends. I was overweight, while my friends were slim and watched what they ate, one of them was in fact a recovering anorectic. I felt embarrassed to fill my plate with high calorie food when my friends ate vegetables and fish, with a cube of melon for dessert, so for two weeks decided to wait for them to get their food from the buffet first. Then, I copied what they ate. Lo and behold, I lost weight! I heard overweight people complaining about slim co-workers going to lunch without them, or overweight friends of formerly overweight people complaining about being cut off from the lives of their now-slim friends. And while I get their pain, from personal experience I can say that - sad but true, being fat is catching! The good news is - so is being slim!

Very much different approach but really factual. Loved your vids all.the time, started watching you a month ago but almost watched every vdo and leaned a lot. Yes that's true that obesity is highly contagious, and this also happens rhat obese people around always encourage us keep eating saying that eating is life, lets enjoy life. But, thank you so much Dr phung, having watchds and learned from u, i have started my journey to health legacy and in 20 days lost my 10 lbs, and trying to follow all healthy regimen to be the best. Love u

This is very clear to me but I can’t seem to convince my friends. The idea of calorie in/ calories out is entrenched. I keep my insulin low ( fasting and the right food) because it feels better. The study on friendship is interesting. But I’m quietly self determining personality. Yesterday we went to lunch and they all ordered salads and drank tea. Lol.

Posted this on your other video. Dr. Fung, over the past 15 years, I’ve lost around 20-30lbs, 3 different times by reducing calories. One time was by eating an even 33%fat/carb/protein eating regimen, one was eating McDonald’s dollar menu everyday for a month, and one was a normal American high-carb/high-fat/moderate protein diet. Those calorie restrictions did come with a toll though. The constant gaining back of fat after a year or so, each time (could also be due to the long winters of low activity), reduced body temperature, and most likely a lethargic metabolism. I had to cut my calories more and more each time, to around 800-1000 kcal the second and third time. So it’s not sustainable. I did the 20:4 intermittent fast for a year straight (following the high-carb/high-fat/moderate-protein diet) and lost 5 lbs while keeping the weight off. My success rate for cutting calories is 100% and my success rate for IM is 100%, but if you factor in long term weight sustainability, IM is the clear winner. Not sure why the study had single digit success rate for calorie restriction though, but maybe there are other factors that affected my weight loss, such as exercise. My activity level is fairly sedentary, but maybe I burn more than I think I do. Also I did go to bed very late throughout most of these diets/tests. Now I’m following a 23:1 IM everyday and trying to eat less sugar, refined carbs, and protein, to keep my insulin low when I am eating, in order to lose my final 20lbs and keep it off.

Too good Dr Fung ! Living in Germany I appreciate greatly. At work we are steadily confronted with sugary juices, cakes (birthday, Christmas Team's fest and with snacks on seminars and Meetings... What do i do: "i behave like an asocial" and i say as excuse that "i may not, i am ill" (Healthy in fact. Weight also optimal) My best friend? is: my body!! Since, I have noticed that I am not alone: two managers keep their fitness and they are just the ones (immorality?) that offer cakes and juices to others (fattening over the years), for their birthday, without eating any! On their desks only water or a coffee. Only eating at lunch times. There must be a corporate care for eliminating these snacks behaviors at work.

We are in our 40’s and still play soccer ...just not as well as we used to LOL. However, alcohol seems to be our outlet when we are together...which isn’t great for our wellness goals. I do, funny enough, have one friend who gets upset if I don’t eat all of my meal when we go out to eat together. Not great! I recently found my love for IF and low carb meals. Loving it! Looking at food in such a different way thanks to individuals such as Dr. Fung, Autumn Bates, Dr. Becky and Thomas Delauer. . **Just wish I could stop the social drinking. That’s the hardest part.

It is refreshing that you say obesity is contageous. It is true in my observation. Also people are consuming WAY WAY too much sugary foods that jack up insulin and serotonin, which are known to cause mass & weight gains. Sugar works better than Prozac and it's less expensive. Insulin is used by russian body builders to get massive weight gain and massive strength to lift 1000lbs. But in the long run it destroys thier liver and they can't lose weight. Obese people like having obese friends/associates, its about having common interests without being humilited. I saw a skinny guy marry into an obese family, in time he eventually became obese also. This is why slim people have slim friends because of the humilition and influence factor.

Dr. Fung, I lost 60 lbs. and gained many health benefits. After several years of IF and one meal a day I have put 10 pounds back on. Analyzing myself, I think there is a fatigue factor that comes into play. It's harder for me to stick to the strict rules everyday, that allowed for my original weight loss. I get tired of fasting and tired of rejecting the poor choices of food at family and neighborhood gatherings. I haven't abandoned the rules, but I've relaxedly them slightly for one or two days each week. The other five or six days each week I am in weight loss mode but weight gained one day takes five days to get it off.
