So you got a sunburn...now what? As a dermatologist, I try to stress the importance of protecting your skin from the sun and preventing sunburns. That's because sunburns (and sun tans!) cause damage that can lead to skin cancer and premature aging. But I get it, sometimes we make a mistake and end up with a sunburn. Here's what to do if you get a sunburn with redness, itchiness, peeling, blistering, and more.

Dr. Sam, I got a serious sunburn as the result of using a sunlamp (to treat acne) for months during my sophomore year in college. Led to 25+ years of psychiatric care to manage my clinical depression. My psychiatrist retired 5 years ago and I continue with all the meds he used to keep my mood under control.Sixty years later, my skin burn is still an issue, easily irritated and gets somewhat inflamed. Several biopsies (10), all labeled normal moles or solar elastosis. For many years now (10), I have avoided the sun. In fact I don’t go out without my full face covering (Coolibar) that has an SPF of 50. Yes I’m totally afraid of the sun and that will continue. I love going out when it’s dark. And I love being home during the day, pursuing my passion for studying via books and the internet. Not getting skin cancer to date has been an enormous blessing, enabling me to enjoy a happy life, especially since my retirement from being a college teacher for 36 years. I only discovered you today, Dr. Sam and I loved your presentation and look forward to more videos and Instagram posts. Finally I want you to know that my father, a distinguished general surgeon, and head of a MASH unit during World War II, suffered greatly from skin cancer (he loved the sun so I never learned about its dangers) and in his early 90’s had his nose completely removed at Sloan Kettering and, despite his childrens’ encouragement, never got a prosthetic nose.” (Sloan had an amazing department devoted to creating prosthetics.) My dad, an incredibly smart man and an incredibly social fellow who knew and was loved by many hundreds of friends and former patients, after 56 years of medical practice and suffering from the ravages of skin cancer, pretty much ended his social life and stayed home. For several years (He died a few months shy of his 98th birthday) he was loved and cared for by 7 of his (and my mom, of course, who died at the age of 81.) 8 children, all of whom lived close by. Each of the 7 spent one evening/night with him during the remainder of his life. P.S. You might be interested in knowing that my dad received X-Ray treatments for acne during adolescence, used a handheld fluoroscope for more than 3 years during World War II, was an avid lifelong golfer, and loved to sit and read in the sun. He seemed to know nothing about sun safety and consequently, his children, all fair skinned and with light colored eyes, knew nothing either. When I started using a sun lamp in college, it was commonly used by students to treat acne. Obviously I went overboard and have paid a great price. Thanks for listening Dr. Sam.

Well, I'm 57 which means I grew up in the era of epic sunburns. I remember a full body burn when we visited relatives in FL. My mother was nurse, for crying out loud, why didn't she do anything when she saw me getting sunburned on the beach? I cannot even count the number of burns I've had in my life. My last sunburns were the back of my neck and the tops of my feet. The worst one was a trip to a lake in high school, where I wore a super deep v neck one piece. Yep, inverted triangle burn on my chest that was SO BAD that it first was red with white dots, then turned gray and hard like a plate. I cannot believe my skin ever healed from that. What did my mom do? Nothing. I didn't apply any ointment or anything, I mean, I was like 17. It was like the late 1970s. Well, it did heal, and now I have lovely vertical wrinkles there that remind me every day of that devastating sunburn. Everyone thinks we knew everything forever, but we've really only learned most of what we know now about skincare in the last few years. Perhaps not even the last decade, but maybe the last five. I was just born too freaking early.

@@janescloset No, not yet. However, I came very close to getting melanoma. The growth on my shoulder blade came back as atypical, but they said if they hadn't removed it, it would have been melanoma. Now, I wear UPF clothing and French sunscreen and UPF hats and gloves. No skin sees the sun any longer. That surgery to remove it was like 30 years ago. I was in my late 20s or early 30s. Could have been a goner.

@@SusanSlattery There was sunblock way back in the early 90's because I remember my mom put it on me religiously when I was a kid. Skincare from the sun is not something that just came about in the last 5-10 years. Skin cancer from uv exposure was well known already when I was a kid, its just more people ignored the warnings back then. Most likely the internet is what helped make people more aware and take it more serious.

Spent 8 hours filming TRL at the MTV beach house in ‘02 with my back directly in the sun. We didn’t know we’d be there all day and had no sunscreen! I’ve learned that white vinegar takes the major heat out, a cool shower followed by a layer of aloe and then a layer of moisturizer plus two Advil do the trick! I’ve been a sunscreen freak ever since!

My worst sunburn was when I was 8 or 9. I was so excited to get into the ocean and ran away before mom could get sun screen on me. My entire face looked like a stop sign. I was in pure agony. I almost went to the hospital. I was at Ocean City Maryland, and a woman suggest I take lukewarm tea bags, and blot them all over my face and chest and sit for 30 minutes. I would have tried anything. It took a lot of the sting out, but I knew I was still burnt, but I wasn't in agony. I'm 38 now, and I have two shades, snow white and scarlet red.

Not a sunburn but my arm touched the mouth of a hand steamer about a month ago and it was like a lobster imprint on my arm. There’s still hyperpigmentation left from it so I’ve been sunscreening all the time. The thing that helped me the most was using my LED red light mask for my face. I placed it on my arm just to see if it would do anything and immediately afterwards my burn sensitivity reduced to almost zero sensitization. It was crazy! I was a little surprised but then again red light is great for wound healing. So glad I had it handy 😂.

Hi Dr. Ellis - I get laughed at for never going anywhere without my little container of Elta sunscreen. I apply it 15 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours religiously especially when I was traveling and on a bus. The heat through the windows was intense. Thank you for the comment that Neosporin should not be applied to a sunburn. I have wondered whether that was a good move or not. If I ever get a sunburn, I will stick with the Aquaphor. Hi Dr Sam I am super careful in the sun as i'm a fitzpatrick one, prone to prickly heat, headaches and burning. I seek the shade where at all possible, wear spf and a hat etc. Even with that I have occasionally been caught out and had a mild burn on the side of my neck or my chest. i've never had a severe burn tbh, as I'm so careful. I have had occasional pinkness when i've been out too long during an activity, or the sun has moved and I wasn't in as much shade as I thought I was. I find centella helps with the damage and the really badly dehydrated skin - layers of a toner/mist containing centella and a soothing moisturiser cooled in the fridge. I find aloe gels irritating on my skin, although I tolerate aloe as an ingredient in products well enough. Anti histamines help with the itch, as does cold moisturiser. I will never tan at all - pink and back to white with a few extra freckles is the extent of it. Too much bright sun (even wearing sunglasses) gives me a headache as well (I have grey eyes). I live in Scotland and normally the sun isn't all that strong here (although we had a recent unusual heatwave), but I still wear spf50, a hat, cover up with light loose clothing and seek the shade as much as possible. i reapply my spf frequently if out in the sun at all. Even before we knew what we know now (I'm 49) I wore spf everyday April to September if out of the house at all. I have never sunbathed and don't perhaps have as much damage as some of my friends. They used to laugh at me for my sun avoidance, but not so much now. Best wishes.

I slipped up Dr Sam I went kayaking today in the Pine River Queensland Australia. 3km on the in-coming tide put me against the wind & tide until the turn and i forgot my leg cover. By the time i used the wind, tide & arms to get me back by shins were just scorched. I'm dipping a towel in icy water & its so relieving. Its not too cold though, & drinking electrolytes & lots of water. I'm going snorkeling on a turtle reef in two days, so very disappointed with myself. Going to have to swim in long pants.. Thanks for the advice, your fabulous to listen to & so pretty i think i'm feeling better from placebo effects lol. Worst sunburn ever.... Before UV cream was invented we used to lather up in Reef coconut oil and i fell asleep on the grass by the beach. I woke up and had left a body print on the grass. A week later it was a me shaped dead patch lol. Oh dear i was cooked and that one bought on the night sweats.

As a child [eight years] I got really bad sunburn after a day at the pool. My back came out in blisters and I couldn't sleep on it. The family I was with were country people, so they gave a country remedy. The soaked a bedsheet in tea and water; and wrapped me in it; I had to sleep that night in the bedsheet soaked in tea. The next morning I was much better: something in the tea took the burn out.

BUT applying sunscreen makes it really hard and painful now 😭 Hope it will heal fast...and take it as a lesson learned. :

One of my weekends off i decided to go to the beach to relax and get some son for Vitamin D ovcoarse i love the beach. Didnt put sunscreen on and got a horrid sunburn. When i got home i fainted twice and was throwing up everywhere due to sunstroke. I was bed ridden for 3 days as i couldnt move my arms or legs.. suprisingly only tiny blisters in areas where i have stretch marks and where my skin has almost never seen the sun. I applied many cooling sprays and etc and nothing helped.. Was an horrific experience. The peeling made me look like an insect shedding its skin.. New profound respect for the sun.. Will deffinatly be protected next time

i went tanning last week, and was exposed to the sun for 7 hours straight with no shade (we forgot to bring an umbrella, and i only reapplied sunscreen twice (even though i had gone in and out of the water like 15 times) when I went back home I felt an itching and burning senstaion on my chest and shoulders, so I looked in the mirror and my skin was severly red, I realized I got a 1st-degree sunburn, it was soooo uncomfotable for like 3 days straight, I skin was burning hot even though I was sitting in a really cold room the whole time, I kept applied aloe vera gel, oatmeal cream, and cicalfate, didnt see much of an improvement, so I decided to to make a mask at home I mixed ( aloe vera gel, yogurt, honey, cucumber, black seed oil, and fish collagen powder🤣) I was desperate to heal it tbh, nonetheless I dunked some tissues into the mixture since it was a liquid consistency and wraped it on the places I had sunburn, sat in that mixture for like 30 minutes, took a cold shower, after the shower i poured some holy water on the sunburn (hahahah) ,while my skin was damp i added argan oil and blackseed oil over my damp skin (locking in that hydration ig) prayed my skin would heal, drank a litre of coconut water (which gave me diahrea, not a good idea) then drank some more holy water idk why i thought that would help🤣and drank a spoonful of blackseed oil with honey, the point is... the next day my sunburn didnt hurt anymore so yay, my skin is peeling rn so im applying a lot of moisturizer but i guess the mask helped😄

So I don’t usually get sunburnt, and that day (which was the hottest day of the week) I just forgot to apply that day. It was also the first day of school so I had no idea what pe was like. But in the pe teacher DID NOT GOCE US SHADE he didn’t care and we weee sitting on a hot black top burning my but 😂 I got a minor sun burn it was just red it didn’t hurt or anything tho. The next day knowing what pe was like I brought sunscreen. (I planned on bringing a hat but I forgot it) so I put on a regular sunscreen and brought another spray one so it won’t ruin my makeup but the thing is MY DAD LEFT THE SPRAY ON IN THE HIT CAR FOR WEEKS AND IT NO LONGER WORKED so now I have a blister-ish patch on my face and this is my first sunburn ever I always just had a tan.

You said to avoid Neosporin. I’ve heard other dermatologists make similar comments. What’s in it that should be avoided? I often use it with a cut and I think the cut heals faster than if left untreated. Am I wrong?

Hi , I recently got my very first sunburn + blister in my 27 yrs. I am living in NA and was out in sun for 5 hrs couple of days. I have brown skin like a wheat color. I am very new to this country climate and am basically from India where i have never ever had a sun blisters. I usually have tan but it go once i wash with curd/yogurt pack. But this tyme i really donna what happened to my skin even though i applied spf 60 got a sun burn, itching, blisters, swelling. Immediately i rushed to doctor and prescribed with allergy tablets which reduced my blister and swollen skin. But still felling bit itchy and irritated towards the products like basic moisturizer. One thing i wanna say here is for many people aloe gel was effective during sun burn but for me it worsened. i tried with raw milk pack it kinda of relaxed but still felt a bit itchy. The before day i got blisters i had a mild steam to face for my sinus headache. This could be reason for sun blisters which i am guessing. Also i used vitamin c serum for very first that night.

I messed up and got a sunburn on my face! Aggg...I'm 51 and using a rentin-a...I didn't put any on the night before because I knew I was going to be in the sun. I put on sunblock 3 times!! But it's humid here and didn't realize I was getting a burn. I'm so upset....I'm really trying to keep my wrinkles at bay! It's red and slightly tender... but not deep red and it's not enough to start peeling I don't think. WILL THIS ONE sunburn cause more wrinkles and damage to my facial skin???

I’ve just developed some pretty huge blisters on each of my shoulders (like 2.5cm diameter) surrounded by all these little blisters, which is very painful and causing me a lot of discomfort. I’ve never skipped out on sun cream and was wearing factor 50 the day I got burned but I’m very pale and was on a boat for a couple of hours so I guess that’s why. I’m not really sure what to do as I’m barely able to raise my arms from the pain it causes, I’m also 15 and now really worried about the damage that this will cause to my skin in the long term. Any help would be appreciated and I really love your videos, they are really helpful.

Soo I love peeling sunburns as weird as it sounds, and i recently got a sunburnt! So currently my face is peeling and I was doing SO GOOD in not peeling the skin, but I just caught myself and I peeled a huge chunk of skin off my nose and now it really hurts and my skin underneath feels so sensitive I’m scared it’s gonna get infected. Could anybody tell me what I can do to prevent the infection from happening??

Aerosol sunscreen. Bs. I used 70spf and even re-applied. I'm now a tomato in pain so I'll be taking this back to Heb for a full refund. I should have gotten the 100spf sunscreen lotion and completely caked it on! I am white and I didn't have a base tan to start but I didn't think the results would be this severe. Basically got a 2nd degree sunburn. No blistering but 4 days after the event and I'm still in a lot of pain. Initially it hurt so bad that I couldn't tell if it was outer epidermis level pain or muscle/joint pain and I could hardly walk! I'm only 35 so I know it's nothing like arthritis but it definitely put me out of commission!

My sunburn started to heal and feel more comfortable after just cold ish showers and aloe spray but 3 days later Today; I was working out in the field planting and wore long sleeves and took steps to cover from more sun damage and clocked in 3 hours of sweating working hard & planting out pumpkins, Drinking tons and tons of water 80 degrees outside Mostly sunny Skin Wasn’t uncomfortable under shirts Long sleeve and short over the top Cotton material for both Long story short I’m covered in tiny and some larger itchy blisters where I burned, shoulders, chest and most of back! Clear fluid within them Took coldish shower immediately No soap And drip dryed and then sprayed with aloe w/lidocaine? What do I do? Sorry so long Google and KZbin videos on specifically days after sunburn and then all of a sudden covered in itchy blisters filled with I’m assuming…sweat?! THANK YOU to anyone with any remedies tips on if I pop or not How long will this last?! What to do to fix it?!

Worst sunburn event was two years ago just before COVID while visiting my BFF in 🌞 Arizona. I take 2 Rx that make me photo sensitive, on top of my very fish belly white complexion. On a 4 hour drive to the mountains, I FORGOT my SPF! 😱 I received a horrible rash like burn on my decollete through the windshield of my friend's SUV. It hurt, was raised, ugly red and angry looking. To treat it I used pure no alcohol aloe vera, colloidal oatmeal creams in the days & weeks following this catastrophe. I was left with a red, hyperpigmented decollete that I am still trying to reduce the look of. I use Cetaphil lotion with licorice root everyday for it. I'm beginning to use a retinol on it, but I'm hesitant as it irritates this area. So, I'm using "The Buffett" by The Ordinary, and Cerave lotions. I now wear SPF everyday along with hats, UV sleeves etc in the car. NEVER AGAIN 😕. I welcome your suggestions and tips.
