Peanuts! My cardio specialist recommended peanuts as a source of fiber, protein and a bit of fat. He said a 1/4 cup of raw, lightly salted peanuts was a good mid-afternoon snack that wouldn't spike my insulin levels, as I have an issue with that.

Ever since I found out that Ireland lived primarily on potatoes for so long it blew my mind that anyone could think they were unhealthy. Like I guess when you deep fry them they are. But that's why you don't deep fry everything
@sathvamp113 күн бұрын
And it's not the potatoes themselves that are "unhealthy" when deep fried- it's the ADDED (disproportionately excessive) fat. Not even the "mere presence" of fat, but the fact it's added (and excessive).

My Nana always said there no such thing as unhealthy food. She said the only thing I should be concerned about was if the food was in it's natural state or not. The more a food is processed the less like real food it is, and if it's not real why eat it? I've taught my kids to read labels, and if their Gran wouldn't recognize the ingredients as food, neither do we.

Well... unless (yeah like you said, I can see your whole comment now)... unless it's not really food and it's just being called food. Or the brain thinks is food when it's not. Example: My friend caught themselves extensively enjoying (for a bit too long of a time) a flavored vaping thing once, and finally said to themselves, "you know, I think I'm actually hungry". But given the exposure to the [nutrient-less] "flavor".... their brain didn't know the difference. It's that sort of thing we need to watch out for in "today's world". That being said, yeah I can't stand the "demonization" of perfectly healthy foods.

"Benefit no matter what the chocolate is".... well it may be worth pointing out to people (who are unaware) that "white" chocolate has a VERY different nutrient profile compared to "whole" chocolate (especially iron; I looked it up and the difference in 100 grams is only 0.2 mg for white vs. 8 mg for regular... that's FORTY TIMES LESS IRON for white compared to regular chocolate).

There's also the chronic illness diet culture like Hashimoto's. Many in the community say to avoid gluten, soy and dairy, but I've yet to see any evidence-based studies to back this up. It's very confusing when you're just looking to live your life and feel better, without medication if possible.

Raw almonds? Organic vs. bathed in propylene oxide? Basically, are almonds safe?
@sathvamp113 күн бұрын
No reason why almonds "can't be" safe, but yeah it probably depends on what's done to them, like everything else.

"Diet culture of the internet". That's a new one for me! What I find more and more true is that I see parts of the whole that someone speaks about as valid, and parts that are not for my understanding, sensibility and rationality. It's a matter of to what degree I see the valid in someone's point of view. The people who take what a doctor says, any doctor (meaning for diet and health) and sees it as the ultimate wisdom coming from a 21st Century guru, that I don't do. It's all a Show Me" mentality for myself.

I know right? How can fruit and vege be bad for us? Did it kill our grandparents, who I can assure you ate a lot of veggies from the garden? I mean I wouldn't recommend trying to live off nothing but grapes, but a slice of melon or a banana? Insane.

@@thehangmansdaughter1120 People tend to take "facts" WAAAAY out of context; that's how it happens. I've seen people afraid to even drink water just because there is such thing as "water intoxication" (from way too much without letting oneself urinate it out). I mean, we just need a little common sense to understand how all "actual facts" work together. Also, comment on the "grapes = sugar bombs" thing: I am really guessing most people who say things like that about fruit just want an excuse to avoid fruit because THEY don't LIKE them (and at the same time, most such people probably quietly enjoy processed sweets that ARE actually "sub-optimal" lol).

I'm also skeptical of the chocolate thing because that research was headed by chocolate company...
@sathvamp113 күн бұрын
Well you can also look at the basic, objective, nutrient content of chocolate. Cacoa beans ARE a real food; it comes right off a tree. And they do sell unprocessed versions (not even in bar form, but in "cacoa nib / nut" form.). Iron and copper powerhouse, in particular.

who is saying that peanuts are full of mold????
@sathvamp113 күн бұрын
That probably comes from the fact that SOMEtimes peanuts CAN get contaminated with a type of mold that produces aflatoxin .... but from what I've read, the incidence of contamination in COMMERCIAL peanut products is low or nill due to tight regulation.

This is excellent, as usual. I am curious about what makes French fries less than healthy. Is it the salt? The search continues.

No. Not the salt.

@stephgreen307015 күн бұрын
Potatoes’ nutrients lie mainly in the peel. French fries are often peeled, the oil they are fried in isn’t great for us, causes acrylamide formation, and many times they are heavily salted. Enjoy French fries, just enjoy them in moderation and don’t have that be the only kind of potatoes you eat.

Specifically on oats, there's a popular doctor who keeps coming on for the forced videos like before the content you want, I believe his name is Grundy. He's one of the worst ever for being down on oats and his most popular clip keeps coming on where he keeps dumping on that. It's maddening and you know that has an effect on people. Some of these guys just must have an angle and some financial conflicts of interest. Makes no sense otherwise.

The reference you quote is I think the best example of financial driven clickbait medical information online.
@derekjolly368017 күн бұрын
@@nwobob That's exactly what I was getting at. I'd also call it medical ethics corruption. Also that that guy and others like him can say this kind of stuff and be almost entirely unchallenged. Sometimes it's not so much that and more honestly different conclusions, say about seed oils, or even with oats if it's nuanced, but I think it's very possible to tell the difference with a critical mind.

I think his name is Gundy. I believe he’s well meaning and many of the things he says may be useful. However, I also think it would be a useful service to provide a counterpoint to some of his info. There is room for some debate on the way to the truth, I think.

@@cassbielski4325 Yeah I mentioned it was Grundy. You just can't get away from him. You give him more credit for well-meaning than I do.
