There is a sweet spot for PITs, too slow and they just turn the wheel and straighten out, too fast and you wont be able locate all of your suspect at the scene. PITs are only one option in the arsenal police use to stop fleeing suspects in vehicles, they just typically have a high success rate.

It's the same reason they can't perform PIT maneuvers or aren't allowed to chase in a lot of places... Individual department "policies". In a lot of places, officers can get in trouble for not actively trying to prevent damage to the police vehicles. It's less of an issue in big cities and with state police, because they tend to employ their own full time mechanics and auto-body people, ultimately costing A LOT less to repair damages.

Maybe no supervisor wanted to authorize a pit because they all know what's apparent in the video: it's amateur hour in that department. Not blocking the suspect correctly initially, using a civilian truck as a backstop, not placing a spike strip or box in front of the driver's front wheels when he was stationary, the unprofessional demeanor of the cops after the suspect was in handcuffs and no longer posed a threat. Now, no one is perfect and mistakes are always made. Any one of these things by themselves could be chalked up to that. But in aggregate it paints a picture of an inept and unprofessional department.

“PIT is Not authorized” That’s some bullshit. What would a 15mph put even do? Pit should always be authorized, especially at higher speeds, because what it the suspect gonna do? Run? The car and/or the suspect is gonna be dead. Quite a disgrace for Florida, a no pit policy.

Of all the things in this video to criticize, that's like the least appropriate thing- especially since within minutes of first fleeing they successfully used spike strips to ruin 3 of the suspects' 4 tires. It legit almost feels like you have an ulterior motive.
@ebill663 ай бұрын
@@williamnother8066 No ulterior motive. There's doing things well, and there's doing things better. I'd hope those officers came to a similar conclusion. That's what professionals do: learn and improve. Decreasing the odds of a 100 MPH chase or shortening it with stop sticks from the get go reduces risk for both the public and pursuing officers. If one of those officers HAD deployed stop sticks while the car was stopped, we'd be celebrating the move, cause it would have been smart. It would have been a good thing to have as part of the plan. Glad it worked out though.

@@justinkaufman495so let him continue to ruin the run and almost hit others, just because he's going slow?
@justinkaufman4953 ай бұрын
@elizabethgeorge168 he's going 15MPH. If he hits anyone the run is over, and the damage would be small enough even he could pay for it. Its also unlikely he would actually hit someone given he was struggling to maintain 15MPH. If you hit him it's a guarantee of a collision. If you leave him "running" at jogging speed you'll catch him when he inevitably stops. Not to mention this kind of damage to a car works like a cascade. It starts from the tires, and things begin to fail very quickly from there.
