Just starting out, trying to learn as much as I can from helpful videos like this one…thanks so much, Mike! Question…I followed the fill (hands only) note for note and wound up striking the 1A as a solid eighth note, but when I listen to you play it, it seems like the 1A is a ghost note, adding significantly to the syncopation (and probably making the kick drum more in line). So is it a solid note or a ghost note? My vote is ghost note. Thanks, and keep it up!!

great job! TP is my favorite. Any thought on getting good bounce off of the electric (rubber) cymbals? I'm having trouble getting faster shuffle beats going on hi hat because I feel no bounce and end up using my arm too much.

I was thinking of getting an electric kit on a low end but not many have dual zone ride cymbal...any recommends? im planning to give the trinity grade 8 exam with it

Hi Carolline, yes you'll need something capable of reproducting the different sounds and dynamic nuances of the higher grades to use it for Grade 8. Cheers!

Does this work the same way as the main groove of use somebody where you miss the cymbal/Tom when you play an offbeat snare?

As simple as it sounds not hitting that bass drum on 1 and not hitting the snare on 2 is tricky and just weird. I can play it better fast than I can slow...LOL

Don't know about other drummers but I play by ear. It would be a lot easier if you just show how many times you hit each specific drum in sequence. I find this almost impossible to follow.

Thanks for watching. I really do try to include in these videos demonstrations which I feel will be helpful to the "I play by ear" learners. Watch at 5:30 here - I'm simply slowly and clearly demonstrating the pattern. PS absolutely key point: IMO good musicians don't choose between reading music/counting/learning music theory etc and "playing by ear" - they do both.
