The audio is from their 1973 Rainbow Theatre live performance but the video is from the Crackerjack performance. Not sure why they mixed them together. Also watch their “Man With the Golden Arm” adaptation, it’s almost 9 minutes of drum solo by Mick Tucker.

This is a totally live performance Vocals, guitar, bass and drums (no overdubs), the studio single is high quality production and the song was written by the top song writers of the 70s, Chinn and Chapman. The Sweet were an excellent live act in the early 70s and a big influence on Kiss, Def Leppard and many others that went on to have success.

6:20 The description says it's live and it is true at least! The video you saw is a live perfomance for TV. The sound of it is taken from the concert of December 21, 1973 live at The Rainbow Theatre London. Their studio recording of Teenage Rampage is even more worked out with some studio tricks, which makes this tight live sound even more impressive
@NIGHTFRIGHT2011 Жыл бұрын
Have to say this wouldn’t have been my first choice to showcase the amazing talent of Mick Tucker, but I’m pleased to see Sweet getting a mention. You were right to say that Kiss, Motley Crue etc were heavily influenced by Sweet, and if you play Hellraiser followed by Kickstart my Heart you will see for yourself. The Man with the Golden Arm on the British version of the album Desolation Boulevard and the extended live version on the 1973 Rainbow concert proved that Mick was as good as any of the name drummers around at the time, and I bet none of them played double bass wearing platform heels (as shown on the superb Musikladen dvd that was released a number of years ago).

Sweet were absolutely huge in Germany back in the day. Starting out as a teenybopper bubblegum band, they soon changed their ways and turned into a teenybopper glam rock band ;) Disclaimer: I love the band. Their vocal harmonies were impeccable, and they hit hard live. Between 1971 and 1978, they had 16 top ten singles in Germany, 8 of which made it to #1. In 1979, lead singer Brian Connolly left the band, partly because he didn't like the new, proggier music direction, but mainly due to his alcohol and, in turn, health issues. They're still touring nowadays, with guitarist Andy Scott being the only original member still in the band. Which is a bit reminiscent of Mick Box and Uriah Heep.

For sure! Glam, especially Sweet, T-Rex, David Bowie, Mott The Hoople, and Gary Glitter, were a huge influence on all those bands, as well as the Seattle bands and the entire Punk movement. One has only to look at Green River, the Seattle punk band that ultimately spawned three of the bigger Seattle bands: First, Mudhoney, who were Sub Pop Records major band until Nirvana, and who just broke up recently. Second, Mother Love Bone, whose lead singer died from a heroin overdose, which led to the tribute supergroup Temple Of The Dog, with new singer Eddie Vedder, plus Soundgarden’s Chris Cornell and Matt Cameron, which, after one album, became the third major offshoot, Pearl Jam. Green River was clearly influenced by everything Glam Rock and Punk. Of course, EVERYone knows Fox On The Run, which, I think, is the one on Guardians Of The Galaxy and their biggest hit, Ballroom Blitz. Their other hits were Block Buster, in 1972, Little Willy in 1972, and Love Is Like Oxygen in 1978. Also, Pat Benatar did a great cover of No You Don’t, on her breakthrough album, In The Heat Of The Night. Thank you for reacting to this, Andrew! They were a fun band, that SHOULDVE been HUGE, and had a long career, but alas, it was not meant to be. If I remember right, only one of the original members, guitarist Andy Scott, is still alive. Steve Priest died a few years ago, in 2020. The band attempted a reunion in 1988, with the original lineup but original lead singer Brian Connolly, unfortunately, developed an alcohol problem which left him in awful health, and he couldnt perform. Connolly died in 97. They did do occasional tours with 2 different versions of the band, with the last two remaining members… one under Steve Priest, and the other under Andy Scott, but no other original material was recorded, after the original breakup in 1979. Oh, btw, the reason I chose this particular video is because it actually IS a very faithful-to-original live performance ! All the rest were the pre-recorded studio version backing up the live video, from TV performances. Perhaps its a live recording put over another existing video recording, as the video def doesnt quite fit with whats happening musically.

Andrew, I think you are right they were not playing live. My guess is that this is a clip from TOTP (Top of the Pops) early 70's when the groups were not allowed to play live, they had to mime to the vinyl track after some band swore whilst playing live, (might have been Ozzy) but I'm getting on in years and can't remember. This track is one of their hits which they had to perform as they were contracted Chapman/Chinn management who only wanted money, they were actually a good rock band if you listen to their own penned tracks.

I hate to say things like that because of the backlash I receive. But important to point out I feel. Doesn't detract from the song/drumming or the band. You have to do what you have to do.

You are correct, in that The VAST majority of early “live” videos of most bands, incl Sweet, were just that … performing “live” using the studio track for Audio, usually with only the singer on mic. Often bands just goofed off, since they werent actually playing. However, this particular video, while quite faithful to the original studio version (and I prefer studio over live, usually), actually IS live, AND it shows the drummer more than the others … which is why I chose it. :)

I suspect Steve Priest subbing in some very... cheeky adlibbed lyrics that aren't on the single version at all... was so anyone in any doubt about their lip synced Top Of The Pops appearances could feel 100% certain this was totally live vocals (mind you, there's so much power in those vocals, there couldn't really be any doubt)
@pete_k11 ай бұрын
@6:20 no this is not the album cut! The album version is more polished and in the chorus Brian's voice is clearly in the front; in this version the harmony vocals are much louder. I think this is a live version, a studio live with some additives perhaps, but you can e.g. hear that there is only one guitar track. Sweet's album versions were never this raw sound-wise. At some points the picture and sound are not in perfect sync, so maybe the sound and video are not from the same performance, but I'm sure the audio is some kind of a live version anyway, and the video too. In playback situations Andy and Steve usually do all kinds of funny poses, but not here, both are clearly focusing on delivering the song.

This is not the studio version recorded for the album Sweet Fanny Adams, which was far more polished and in this clip, some more earthy lyrics have been substituted (which was pretty normal for Sweet in live performances [Steve]). As a number of comments below suggest, this is far from the best example of a live performance by the band. The Musikladen DVD (all content is on KZbin) and the Rainbow concert are far better, especially if the performance of the drummer, Mick Tucker is of primary interest. Mick is anything but an ensemble drummer.
