He was the star of the show when I saw them. It's almost ironic because it's a "Guitar band for Guitarists by Guitarists" and the 'slap bass' and 'drum machine' became the identity of the band. He was front and center stage under the spotlight the whole show. Literally watching wood fly off his sticks like a wood chipper from front row. I am a guitarist and a huge fan of tosin but Matt is the best musician in the band.

I mean he’s 29 and he’s only been on two animals as Leaders albums, so he’s got a lot more drumming left in him. Whether or not you consider him a great he has left a mark on modern drumming, and he’s got a lot more drumming to do before he’s done.

I mean it's by no means easy, but I think he's just choosing not to play ghost notes in that section to emphasize the bass drum pattern. Besides being a technical genius he's also very musical and plays to serve the song.

Interesting. Around 4:47 he swings past the left of the snare. I wonder if it's a syncopation thing to keep his timing. I've seen some drummers purposely hit their leg instead of the snare on weird parts where they feel like they MUST connect with something with that hand on that specific beat.
